Hotel's Favourite
My fiancé and I stayed for 5 days at Amor Arenal for a much needed getaway celebrating our engagement and my birthday.
If you are looking to connect with nature and disconnect from the day to day bustle, I cannot recommend this place more.
The Property:
For a place that it surrounded by beautiful fauna and wildlife, the staff do an incredible job keeping the grounds meticulously clean. Constantly sweeping the roads, cleaning amenities multiple times per day, etc. It is absolutely stunning and tucked away from the main town. Bring good walking shoes as a lot of the roads are uphill; that being said they constantly have golf carts wizzing by and asking if you want a ride. There is so much wildlife on the resort it’s amazing - we saw roadrunners, toucans, hummingbirds, frogs, geckos and lizards.
Rooms:
Words can’t do justice. We stayed in #21 which is further away from the amenities but had an incredible view of the volcano when the sky was clear. First round of the mini bar is free, which has two types of beer (4 cans total), a bottle of sangria (a good 4 glasses), mini cokes and ginger ales, milk (To use with the frother for lattes!), and lots of water (which they always replenish for free every day). The shower is a dual rain shower and is godly. Despite the open concept of the room / shower there is total privacy and fairly quiet. We’d occasionally hear our neighbours if they were outside, but not for longer than an hour. The jacuzzi is a nice touch too - just be careful getting in as the first step is steep! The staff were very attentive in constantly replacing our towels too, which was nice. The bed is super comfy - probably the best sleep I’ve had in years from being actually in tune with the sunrise and sunset. You just have to be vigilant about closing the doors as bugs do get in quickly. There was one day where we saw a cockroach but never again after - it’s helpful to place a towel in front of the front door as there’s a slight gap. AC was sufficient and the room has a giant ceiling fan too! Again, stunning architecture and wood pieces. A true oasis.
Pools:
If you are looking for a pool or beach vacation, this is not the place for you. If you’re looking for quiet reflection and time with nature, then this is amor arenals specialty. The pools are quaint, with a main one closer to the restaurants, and a second one down the opposite way. The pool with the wet bar is warmed, the rest are cooler but are refreshing and have beautiful waterfalls cascading down. As it is small, I could see it filling up fast on sunnier days, but we never had an issue and people usually didn’t stay too long to lounge at the pool.
Amenities:
The meditation space and yoga room are breathtaking, looking out to the rainforest and so, so serene. They offer yoga every morning, but we never attended and did our own thing later. The meditation space seldom had anyone else there, which was nice. The path there is beautiful and you’ll likely see lots of animals! We saw a howler monkey closer to the meditation space. We never used the gym, but it’s spacious and has ample equipment - my only qualm was that it smelled like if you leave clothes in the washer and forgot about them lol.
There are 2 trails on the property - Nanciton (which is easier and beside the jaranita bar for access) and the serenity trail (More difficult). Both are free to use, with options to pay for a guide. At the start of Nanciton there are walking sticks available for use (and free yay), which were super helpful. We opted to do that trail a few times on our own and managed fine. If you aren’t experienced hikers it’s totally doable, just bring proper shoes (we got hiking runners just for the trip and they were awesome). The serenity trail looked intimidating without a guide so we skipped it.
Spa:
Worth the money. Was easy enough to book and they didn’t pressure too much (More on that later) about add ons. They start off with a nice foot scrub and some tea, and you can hear the forest as you get your massage. We opted for the howler monkey experience (which is hot stone) and it was wonderful. They ask you ahead of time about problem areas too which is nice.
Food:
Echoing other reviews, this is where I’d say the hotel falls short. The food is okay, but definitely overpriced.
Breakfast is AMAZING - highly recommend the Costa Rican, which comes with chorizo, scrambled eggs, a lil tortilla with fried cheese (Like halloumi adjacent), rice and beans, a mini pancake and fried pancakes. In addition to whatever you order, you also get a bowl of fresh fruit (so good omg), a small bowl of oatmeal (also delicious), coffee, and a juice of the day. Ask for tap water or else you’ll get charged 10$ for a bottle of Voss. We’d usually be so full fro, breakfast that we could skip lunch.
Get the nachos from the wet bar, and or the cucumber margarita.
The tapas at jaranita are good
El rancho for dinner - the salmon was quite good. We heard the couple next to us say that the steak dinner for 2 was ‘chewy’..so make of that what you will.
I will say that the staff really tried to push their gastro experience (Chefs corner) as well as their grill it yourself dinner, but thankfully once you politely decline they don’t push it.
Which brings me to my other slight qualm about this place - the tours and food are overpriced, and the staff are likely given incentives to sell them. Though most staff weren’t too pushy, it does take away from the wellness experience slightly.
Overall, will 100% be going back and feel so rejuvenated after visiting. Pura Vida!! Shout out to Jogebeth for checking in with us and making my birthday extra special :).
Tips - get alcohol from duty free to bring to the room, it’s cheaper and will fit in the mini fridge. Get the airport pick up /drop off - pricy but the roads are brutal I wouldn’t feel safe navigating myself or without an suv.
Bring bug spray and LONG sleeves! The weather is about 5 degrees (C) cooler than when you land because of the elevation.
Go into town; we wanted to but didn’t plan. Apparently there’s excellent food and it’s overall safe as there are mostly tourists.
Visit the lil snack shack, they have some goodcroisssnts with salami.
Bring good walking shoes and a camera!

Recognizing that Amor Arenal is the newest modern cabin luxury gem in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, I decided to book this lodge for a first time visit to the rain-forest destination. It did not disappoint. It is quietly tucked away and still very close to everything. With only 31 casitas it's the perfect seclusion. Among its bathroom amenities are ear plugs, eye mask and a flat iron. Things not traditionally included at a hotel. There's lots of closet space and draws for clothes, shoes, etc. If you chose to skip the complimentary yoga classes, you can use your own private deck to exercise. Weights and mats are right in a closet of your cabin. The wooden floor compliments the cabin and adds to its luxury. The open natural outdoor light that takes over the room through ceiling to floor glass windows is just remarkable. The beds are deliciously comfortable but if you are one to sit up and do things in bed, the no head board could take some getting used to. Lodging in a rain forest makes you susceptible to things that live in it. Bug repellent is provided as well as bug plug-in for the wall. (No unpleasant scent is detected) When I’m booking a property, room décor with modern furniture, space and sleep are what I’m most drawn to. When I compared Amor Arenal to other properties in Costa Rica including The Springs Resort and Nayara I was won over by the overall quality of the cabins. The enormous shower with ceiling to floor glass featuring the natural rainforest backdrop cannot be overlooked. The outdoor Jacuzzi has a fun element that allows you change the color of the lighting at night.
I enjoy starting vacation mornings with a good breakfast spread. There was plenty to eat with a variety of choices. Shout out to Douglas for bringing me warm almond milk for my coffee. I ordered room service once. It wasn’t great but overshadowed by other wonderful things the property offers, like free laundry service. In fact the overall service at this property is stellar. I would recommend and return.
There are no treats at turn down. Since Costa Rica is known for chocolate and coffee if I could recommend one thing it would be a turn down treat with one or both of these flavors. Madolin checked us in. She is super sweet. I hope this review helps someone decide. This property and service are amazing!

Best hotel in la fortuna! Great staff beautiful rooms and amazing property is just the beginning. Location is also wonderful. The staff will help you reserve any activities in the region. The staff is extremely helpful and nice. The food is AMAZING! The head chef is a master in the kitchen, everything is local and fresh. To say that I loved this place is an understatement!
The hotels location is one of its best qualities it’s of the beaten path so you don’t hear the traffic of the roads and the views are spectacular. The rooms are fully stocked, even with the most detailed items such as umbrellas all over the property, flashlights for night exploring and hair irons. The spa is also wonderful. Highly recommend!!!!!!!!!

Positives:
1. Each guest/couple is given their own “casita” small house and all are identical and magnificent. A-frame design, gorgeous wood interior, dramatic lighting, huge glass rain shower, and a very private deck with your own hot tub.
2. The staff is friendly, enthusiastic, hard working and well trained.
3. FREE daily laundry service, free minibar (one generous supply), included gourmet breakfast buffet.
Concerns:
1. Location. Resort is built on the side of a steep mountain. Unless you are billy-goat fit you will need to call for a golf cart anytime you step out of your casita. Resort is isolated with limited access to town and few common areas. Altitude increases chances of rain and wind. We often found town dry when pouring at resort.
2. Lighting in casitas is low, soft, dramatic. Until resort adds reading lights by beds, bring a headlamp if you like to read in bed.
3. Dining room. Overly ambitious plan to grow their own food (even keep quail for eggs!!!) has led to over-priced and underwhelming selection of food...and an empty dining room in a full resort. Major changes needed here.
4. Swimming pools (2). Small, dark, industrial, lightly used with all the rain, and we were there in “dry” season!
In summary, it’s a beautiful property with challenges.

Dear Nnker, Thank you so much for your review. We are thrilled to know you enjoyed your casita and the service of our staff, we will adress your lovely comments. We are so sorry to hear we did not meet your expectations with some things about our hotel, your feeback really help us to improve the experince for future guests. However, when talking about the location, we must say that this is one of our main values. we are just 7 minutes away from La Fortuna Downtown but you feel like being isolated and that is definitely the "immersion in nature" experience that want to offer. Also, taking advantage of the topography of the property so all the casitas are on the line over the canyon with the showers surrounded by trees and a view of the volcano. Our golf carts ar available 24 hours so our guests can move easily anytime. Regarding the pool areas, it is important to mention that as a boutique hotel, the design and concept was focused on creating cozy and intimate spaces and that's why they may seem small and dark. Thank you so much again, and we hope to welcome you again. Best regards Erick Lizano General Manager

Just driving up to Amor Arenal along the winding lush landscaped drive, was stunning. Then you arrive at the outdoor receptions area you know that you are in a very special place. The staff is immediately warm and welcoming with cool refreshing towels.
You are then taken via golf cart to you individual casita. The units are stunning; a mixture of wood, stone and brick, creating a cozy, warm, homey feel. Each unit has a very private deck with a jacuzzi and Adirondack chairs. The enormous shower has a floor to ceiling glass wall that makes it feel like an outdoor shower.
From the dinning room, to the spa, to outdoor meditation open air hut, with its stunning rain-forest view, you are surround by beauty and serenity.
But best of all is the staff. On every level they never fail to greet you with a smile and offer to help you.
I had an injury and every time I called for a golf cart they arrived with ice or had a bag waiting when we return from every excursion.
But what took their customer service over the top was when I asked for a recipe from breakfast they showed me an ingredient on the internet which is a staple in every Costa Rican home.
When I returned from our days activities there were 3 bottles wrapped in ribbon waiting in our room!!!
You will never want to leave this place or these people.

Extremely friendly welcome and personal introduction to top class accommodation, facilities & services in a quiet scenic location overlooking Arenal volcano. The individual lodges are spacious and beautifully furnished & equipped, with stunning views into the rainforest from the bedroom, walk-in shower-room and private jacuzzi bath set into the balcony terrace. Located on a steep incline, guests are offered short rides around the grounds on chauffeur-driven electric golf carts, if the daily exercise involved proves too much for some.

If you want to head to a luxury hotel in Arenal, you are at the right place with Amor Arenal. There are 31 chalets on property and each offers their guests a fantastic view of the volcano (when there are no clouds). Our room had a huge open space, a private plunge pool / hottub which was filled and super clean, and a shower that you could throw a party in. The shower is at the back of the room and has a huge window wall that faces the volcano.
The staff are all very friendly and professional and seem to keep a close eye on their guests. We had an issue at dinner our first night and the next morning, the concierge a breakfast came to talk to us about the incident and noted to us that there was a report filed.
Breakfast is included and you should take advantage of this. Unlike many hotels where included breakfasts are buffet, this is a la carte and the options are exceptional. If you have an early morning tour, the hotel will box up sandwiches for you before you leave.
The grounds offer 2 walking trails. The one trail would be moderate to difficult and takes approximately 30-40 min and has some significant elevation changes. The other is a 3 hour walk that must be done with a guide (we did not do this). The rooms are all located on a fairly steep hill and if you have ANY trouble walking up and down hills, the hotel has a number of staff driven golf carts…just ask a staff member to call you a cart or dial 0 and they are there within minutes. This is a lifesaver depending on which room you are in.
There are 3 pools on the property, 2 cold and 1 hot with a swim up bar. The drinks are awesome.
The property also has a full spa and we did a couples Serenity Session which was 80 min…for someone who is not a spa guy, it was really great.
We ate dinner at the hotel on our first night and the food was good but quite expensive. While it costs ~$10 USD to head into La Fortuna, the price difference in food does make up for this.
As it was our anniversary, the hotel provided us with chocolate strawberries and a lovely bottle of sparkling wine as a special gift. This is a top tier hotel and should be considered if you are in Arenal.

From the moment we arrived to checking out, everything was spectacular. We were greeted with a bottle of champagne, fresh handmade truffles, a handwritten card and a free couples massage voucher. The room is beautiful, food is great, staff is wonderful and the view was marvelous! We were lucky enough to see the tip of the volcano during our stay!
The resort only has about 30 rooms so it’s always very quiet and tranquil. They have a free naturalist guided tour onsite, we went and saw the cutest owl! Breakfast is served daily and they change it up so you’re not stuck with the same choices everyday. The spa is amazing - probably one of the most relaxing massages I ever received. Kudos to the staff - everyone was so kind, attentive and helpful. Especially Carlos and Marlo. Thank you Amor Arenal for an incredible stay!

Amor Arenal is an experience you must have if your are visiting La Fortuna/Arenal Costa Rica. The staff is amazing from the time you are greeted at the entrance until you leave (which is hard to do).
Each room is a cabin style with beautiful wood features in the room. Each room had its own 16 x 16 shower with clear glass on the one side making you feel like you are in the rainforest. In addition, each room has it's own private jacuzzi.
There are 3 pools, a gym, spa and restaurant on site.
Breakfast is included and was wonderful.
The view of Arenal Volcano is spectacular at sunset from the restaurant, but you can also see a partial view from your room.
There wasn't a time that we passed a staff member that they didn't ask if we needed anything. The know the area well and can assist with tours and any other requests.
They have great spa amenities as well as a yoga room and serenity trails through out the property. The Nacion Trail also has a naturalist which will give tours. Reservations are a must for this.
This is a perfect place to unwind and unplug, however, they do have free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

This resort is a very special place that will be one of the highlights in our lifetime of travel. The casitas are gorgeous (exactly as pictured) and you feel like you’re staying in a luxury treehouse in the cloud forest. The deck and private hot tub is a wonderful place to relax after a day of exploring. The views from the casitas are simply stunning.
We ate 90% of our meals on site because the food was so delicious and the staff was so welcoming. The included breakfast includes many options and the portions are very generous (maybe too generous according to my scale!).
They offer golf cart assistance for getting around and we loved this option not only for the convenience but also for the chance to get to know the staff, who were genuinely excited for us to be there and extraordinary kind and helpful. They treated all of us wonderfully, helping my son with his Spanish and making a special effort for my daughter’s birthday. We loved everything about this resort and took full advantage of its hiking trails, guided meditation, gym, pools and amazing spa.
They take Covid very seriously with cleaning, masks and many precautions—we felt very comfortable. You can arrange for a Covid test for re-entry into the US at the property with advance notice or get one in town (about 15 min away by taxi).
Highly recommend and we hope to return someday.

The hotel has heated pools, not any natural hot springs.
There were blinds in the hallway leading to the bathroom, but the sliding door to the outdoor deck allows lots of natural light into the bedroom area. It was never a problem for us since we enjoyed the brightness of the room, but if you prefer complete darkness, a mask may be the way to go.
Hello...Of course you can use your own discretion because we're tippers in general, but their hospitality was so outstanding that we just had to! We didn't convert, so we used US dollars. We left some in the room for housekeeping, tipped the folks who picked us up in the golf carts, and for the hostess & servers at breakfast even though breakfast was included. It was simply their pride in service! We had a couples massage which included a chocolate scrub (can't remember name), but it was so wonderfully different than any others we've had. Very relaxing, satisfying & worth the money! Unless you're really into hiking, you can miss the 1.5 hour paid guided trail tour on their property. The free Nanciton trail which they say is doable in 30 min took us non-athletes over an hour & trust me it was more than a plentiful work-out!
