There are many great things about this hotel, but the best has to be the service. Before we arrived, emails were responded to quickly and diligently and we had an amazing welcome even when we turned up at 4:30am to check in. All the staff are really friendly and accommodating and nothing seems to phase them! The hotel is also in a great location and you get given a little map with great recommendations of things to do around. They also provide you with a little mobile phone with an Indian sim card which came in handy a couple of times. The design of the place is very tastefully done and even though we had the basic room with no window, it still felt very comfortable. I'll definitely head back there next time I'm in Mumbai.

We had a fantastic stay at Abode - the staff were super welcoming and helpful. We were given a local phone with credit which we could use to contact staff or make local calls. A nice touch.

The communal area was lovely and the breakfast was excellent. They also ran a DIY session with the cook to assemble local snacks which was delicious and interesting.

We opted for the basic room which was excellent value, particularly given the overall decor and the fantastic location. However, the rooms were a bit damp (the shower had no extractor fan) and loud (you could hear noise between the rooms very clearly).

Would highly recommend the morning tour around the markets. An early start but worth it!

Overall a fantastic stay but would recommend splashing out for one of the more expensive rooms.

So pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us and all the little details - the snacks are always a big hit! Sorry to hear your rom was a little damp we will look into this and get it sorted. We are aware of some noise filtering through in few of the basic rooms but as you mentioned we would recommend getting an upgrade to experience Abode at its absolute best.

This is a small but great hotel in the former house of david sasoon, one of Mumbai’s historic characters. The staff are very helpful for recommending restaurants and organizing tours. It is in walking distance of the gate of India (Wellington pier) and the train terminus with plenty of back streets to explore. There is one communal room for breakfast, sitting and talking to other residents which gives a friendly welcoming feel to the hotel. The only downside if you like it quiet is the cacaphony of beeping horns from the mad traffic as Mumbai wakes up in the morning but ear plugs are provided.

Thanks so much for staying with us at Abode, we are thrilled you had such a lovely stay and enjoyed the tours too. Yes, we are in a busy area so the earplugs can definitely help in those rooms closest to the street!

What we will remember from the Abode Hotel in Mumbai is the kindness of the staff, the efficiency of their service (we booked 2 city tours through them). The hotel serves some street food for breakfast which is a good solution to try it safely. The location is perfect. However the AC is not properly functioning so much that the air becomes toxic in the room: after a whole night of sleep (no sleep actually so much warm it was) the quality of the air is the equivalent of the one in a wine cave. This is really bad and i really hope they will do serious improvement to their equipment because their could be healthy safety issues.

We took two rooms, one for us as a couple with two small children, one for our parents. One was a Superior Luxury room and one was a Luxury room. The difference between Superior and not-superior was the availability of a bathtub in the middle of the room.
Pros:
The rooms were charming, nicely decorated with vintage photographs and old style furniture.
The staff were courteous, always willing to help.
Location, very very close to the Gateway of India.
Cons:
Ok we should be honest, this hotel would have been great for young travellers who dont have any specific needs. If you go with young children, you need to note - there is no bottled water as they are plastic free, no kettle to boil the water they give, which you generally expect in a hotel at this cost. Once I tried request for warm water from the staff and I got it in a very dirty cup sadly. If it is just us as a couple, we wouldnt have found this a big discomfort.
Location - though it was a pro because it is close to attractions, it is a con because it is a very cramped road and the hotel is not visible at all from the road. If you are super comfortable in hailing taxis in Indian cities, you can manage. Sometimes Uber/Ola drops you somewhere on the road. Surprisingly, I couldnt find many convenience stores in the area that is supposedly a very busy market place.
They did not come for housekeeping until we called. We did go out during the day, but when we came back the bed was not made and trash was not emptied. As they were a plastic free hotel, there was a beautiful copper water pot used as a trash can. Though it was beautiful, it was super full very fast. But once we called they did come and clean.

Overall, we were having issues only because we had old parents and young kids with us in the trip. If you are backpacking travellers, you may love this hotel and have a lot of fun.

Let’s face it. Mumbai is an amazing city, but its traffic and teeming population are overwhelming. When visiting, where should one stay? For shear opulence, the Taj is the obvious choice. However, you could be any where In the world if opulence is your object. But only two minutes away, on a relatively quiet side street, is another option, Abode, with 20 rooms instead of hundreds. There’s nothing fancy about it. In fact, after climbing two flights of wide teak stairs, you’re a bit skeptical as you enter because the front desk is also the dining room. But this is a charming place, comfortable with modern amenities and a warm, welcoming and very helpful staff. You can’t ask for a better location. Like the Taj, you’re in the heart of everything, but without the fuss and formality. I want to be clear: Abode is not for everyone. If you want a boutique hotel with character, a more relaxed atmosphere, and great service, this is the place for you. We had wonderful recommendations for excursions like a street food tour that was very professional and one of the highlights of our trip to Mumbai. We are very seasoned travelers and we highly recommend this wonderful place. One caveat: avoid staying in room 101, which is quite small and next to the kitchen, which is a bit noisy.

Stayed at Abode for 1 night ahead of our journey back to the UK. With just 1 full day in Mumbai to explore, Abode was in the perfect location, right by the gateway to India and Ocean Drive. The hotel is quirky - reminded me quite a bit of a hostel in terms of set up, with a less formal, more relaxed atmosphere however much more high end. There is a coffee shop in the hotel which was superb. We booked a cheaper room which did not have a private bathroom but this did not matter as the communal bathroom was very clean and often not busy. The room, although basic, was clean and well appointed and I think demonstrated good value. The hotel provides a really useful welcome note with a map and suggestions for restaurants, bars and museums etc. The staff were friendly and very helpful, helping us to book a restaurant (we booked Trishna which was excellent) and providing useful additional suggestions. We also did one of the half day tours offered by the hotel - this was probably more expensive than if we had booked ourselves however the hotel arranged it all for us, something we didn’t have time to do and the tour itself gave a good flavour of Mumbai and we really enjoyed it. Tour included a private driver and guide. There are lots of different tours you can choose from. Our flight was late in the evening and although check out was in the morning, the hotel let us keep our bags in reception all day and allowed us to come and go as we pleased which was really appreciated. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Mumbai.

Excellent start to our India trip. This is a very friendly and calm hotel in an interesting part of Mumbai. Lots of good places to eat nearby. The decor is reminiscent of restaurants like Dishoom in the UK - retro Indian and very stylish. Breakfasts were good. Lots of nice touches - particularly giving each guest a mobile phone that they could use for the duration of their stay. Very handy given the awkwardness of getting an Indian SIM card. We booked late and ended up in one of the smaller and cheaper upstairs rooms with a shared toilet. The only criticism was that the corridors were a little low on headroom in places and the rooms could get a little stuffy at times. The shared toilets were very clean. But I think we’d try and get one of the larger and more expensive rooms if we visited again. Which I definitely would do when we’re next in Mumbai. Thanks Abode!

Thank you so much for your fabulous review, so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us and that you will be returning on your next trip! Yes we do try and make guests aware that the most basic rooms are connected by low beamed corridors and have shared bathrooms and we price them accordingly - but definitely you should try one of our larger rooms next time you stay. Thank you!

Ambiance is superb. Colaba is a perfect area to stay as you can walk almost everywhere. Had an Ayurvedic massage with a impaired of sight lady and had a lady taxi driver pick us up at the airport, was perfect. Communication with Abode was impeccable. Available are excellent tours, chose the early morning 5.30 am tour which is amazing, because at this hour there is no traffic! And the places visited were amazing. The breakfast included is simple but plentiful. Room was not too big but comfortable and very clean. Staying in a historic building was a pleasure and the owners have perfectly decorated the Abode. Thank you to all staff who were courteous and helpful.

We had an excellent stay at Abode and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Mumbai. Abode provided transportation from a woman-run taxi service which picked us up from the airport as well as dropped us off early in the morning (4AM) at the train station. Not only was this service smooth, but also provides jobs to local women, particularly single mothers or widows, which was a nice touch.

Upon arrival, we were offered an in depth explanation of local sites including restaurants, markets, and historical sites. We decided to do the street food tour, led by Vasu, which we would also highly recommend. The tour visited local markets and allowed us to try different types of street food. We were a bit hesitant to try street food without a guide, but Vasu did an excellent job, and we were able to sample some amazing food with the comfort of not worrying about “Delhi Belly” after eating.

We also got massages offered by Abode. While the spa set up was somewhat simplistic, the massages were great and were done by blind locals, which provides them with jobs which again was a nice touch.

The rooms were very clean and the beds were comfortable. Abode is also zero waste, and offered filtered water in glass bottles which was a welcome change from all of the plastic water bottles we had used previously on our trip. Our departure train was very early in the morning, and Abode provided us with sandwiches for the train and a light breakfast which was great. Overall the stay was amazing and we would definitely stay there again!
