#7 of 15 hotels in Bocas Town
It is located at the Southern tip of Third (Main) Street, in a majestic antique wooden building, that has already celebrated its hundredth anniversary and is still standing firm despite the ravages of time and the destructive earthquakes of 1917 and 1991. Built in 1905, it is considered one of the oldest buildings in the area. We offer the 18 most spacious and comfortable rooms, all of them with A/C, WI-Fi connection, Cable TV, safety boxes and private bathroom with hot shower.

The Gran Bahía was a home run for us. We were in Bocas during carnival and the Gran Bahía was at the other end of town from the festivities, so it was realitively quiet. It is Family owned and operated and everyone was so kind and helpful. The breakfast was well attended and very complete. The rooms are spacious, the beds are great, and everything is super clean. It is an old hotel....in a very good way.

I recently stayed at the Gran Bahia for two nights while in Bocas on a solo over the holiday. Pros: The hotel is located well and as very easy to find from the dock after being dropped off later than expected in the rain. The history of the hotel as a bank explains the bars in the front counter and the locks. I was happy to have A/C after nearly two weeks traveling through Nicaragua & Costa Rica without such amenities. And the A/C worked well. The room was dated however, I felt it was charming. The bathroom was small but clean. Cons: the walls were paper thin, I could hear a conversation out in the hall clear as day. You could also hear the club across the street playing loud music till the early hours of the morning. There was no hot water in the shower. The complimentary was subpar. Breakfast consisted of bread and toasters, cereal, a small amount of fruit and processed meat (bologna sliced) and cheese slices. The milk was in containers that sat out on tables in the hallway in the heat. It tasted sour on my second morning at the hotel. I felt this hotel was a bit overpriced for the quality. If I return to Bocas, I will be staying elsewhere.

Positives: the hotel has wifi and airco. Negatives: rooms are very dated, bathroom has got a dirty shower stall and is so tiny you can't even put your toiletries anywhere, under mattress is stained, the walls are so thin you can hear everything your neighbor does. The breakfast is very very basic which is ok if it weren't for the fact that everything including perishable items are put on a table in the hall in 30c degree weather and not being cooled which I think is downright dangerous. Tip if you are staying in this hotel ask for a quiet room away from the main street since the disco tends to go on until 4.30 am and is loud. We stayed here 3 nights but I'd recommend to use it for 1 or 2 nights tops.

It looks good from the outside, it is an iconic building in Bocas town, it is well-located and has water coolers on both floors (helpful as you can't drink the water in Bocas), and that's really where the good bits finish. Our room was dark and dank - it had a low powered light bulb in a dark brown lampshade. Wet clothes took days to dry, even when strategically placed in front of the air con fan. The shower was covered in black blotches. Shabby curtains, no view, no balcony or any outside space which was a shame as we were looking forward to three days relaxing after touring Costa Rica. On the Saturday night, the music from somewhere up the street belted out till 4.15am - I know the time exactly as I didn't get a wink's sleep until it finished! Breakfast was also disappointing. Cereal, some fruit, toast and jam, processed cheese and processed meat slices. This was our first hotel in Panama after the high standards of Costa Rica, but I'm sure there must be better hotels in Bocas. Look around at other hotels before you choose to book here.

Really clean, the bathrooms in the normal rooms are small, thin walls so it can be a little bit noisy, comfortable beds, the breakfast is simple (toast, cereal and fruit) excellent location and friendly staff. I would come back!
