We stayed at the Anantara for 8 nights following 2 weeks of travelling and staying in various places in Sri Lanka.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Sri Lanka but what really did make it special were the Sri Lankan people themselves and nowhere epitomised this more than at the Anantara. All the staff from those working on the grounds through cleaners, restaurant staff to front of house were friendly, helpful and usually happy to engage in conversation. You are made to feel especially welcome when dining at Journeys where we enjoyed chatting with Tachila,Thisari and others, often fairly new staff but very pleased to be working there. The manager of the pool bar,Greshan, was probably the nicest person we met in Sri Lanka and his story of surviving the tsunami we will never forget, thanks for the G&T’s!Likewise to the ‘beach boys’ Nuwan,Heshan and others who ensured our place on the grass for sundowners and just couldn’t stop smiling and laughing.Great guys.Front of house was Thisal who was at the end of all our WhatsApp’s sorting out laundry, drinks and every other request. Thanks
The grounds are immaculately kept with people sweeping from sunrise to sunset and contain many different trees, shrubs and plants as well as animals and birds, well worth taking a closer look at to appreciate.Don’t miss the man who climbs the impossibly high palm trees with just a bit of rope between his feet, chopping down coconuts.
The whole complex sweeps close to the shoreline and is bookended by the Il Mare Italian style restaurant high up overlooking the cliffs and wonderful on an evening to Verala Asian themed restaurant shaped to mimic 2 coconut shells and very impressive. We ate there 3 times and were expertly looked after by Rizvi enjoying watching the chefs with their clanging blades making the kotthu or other specials.
The beach in front of the hotel can be challenging to swim in and not for the inexperienced but the adjacent public beach Goyambaku is safer but still great fun for bodyboarding.
Our all inclusive package allowed us a one hour spa treatment which is very classy and we also enjoyed the high tea experience.I wanted to try a surfing lesson and the hotel have a company called Tropic surf which is located on site and run by Shaun and Lainey which take you to a safe and quiet beach some 20 minutes away by tuktuk.Great fun, very tiring but no good if you’re 63 and unfit!
The Anantara is very much a 5 star experience.

A beautiful and well positioned resort. Just off the main road but once inside the main entrance you feel miles away from the hustle & bustle of daily life. Greeted inside by traditional singing, drumming & a cold welcome drink you instantly know that you are in for a wonderful stay. The views from the balcony above the main restaurant are stunning and we were very fortunate to have a room ready for us even though we arrived quite early in the morning. We thank you for that. Our room on the first floor with sea glimpses was large and well laid out with a huge bathroom including shower and separate bath and a wonderfully furnished bedroom with a comfortable bed and a balcony area. The swimming pool has two levels and the staff do a great job there and also on the beach. The beach is stunning although it’s a little two dangerous to swim in February and I expect for much of the year round. The main buffet restaurant downstairs is nice, with enthusiastic and friendly staff and on the whole the food is very good. The Verala restaurant is really the highlight though. We were on half board and a supplement had to be paid but having the food cooked in front of you teppanyaki style is really not to be missed. Asanka put on an amazing display of skills and really is the star of the show! The gym has state of the art facilities (running machines etc) and a good games room is also on site with pool, table football and ping pong. The only slightly odd thing was the choice of outside cinema film for the evening showing by the swimming pool. Not suitable at all for young families and probably the reason why only a few people showed up. All in all a very good experience. Thank you.

We had a welcome with traditional Sri Lankan singing and drumming, and easy check-in (via iPad) at this big 5 star hotel (about 150 rooms/suites). We stayed in a Premier Beach access room. I can repeat a lot of comments stated previously: very nice hotel, big room with comfortable bed and everything is of high quality. The room offered a lot of extras with attention to detail, e.g. after sun lotion and wet swimsuit bag. We had a personal attendant, Yohan, who was very helpful and could be contacted directly by WhatsApp.
The gardens were nice with lots of loungers by the pool or near the beach with sea view. The beach was beautiful but swimming was not advised due to high waves and strong currents. However, there are other beaches nearby where you can swim.
There are two lovely pools on different levels, and great for swimming lengths. It was perfect when we were there as the hotel was less than half occupied, but I can imagine the pools would be very busy when the hotel is full.
Whilst the buffet restaurant was expensive (I think the dinner buffet cost was LKR 6800 person, double the price of other hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka), choice and quality of food was excellent. It was a seafood theme when we were there and included Slipper Lobster and crab. Drinks, particularly wines and spirits, were also the most expensive we had in Sri Lanka - a very average bottle of wine was about LKR 7,000 (about £32), even sparkling water was expensive. Lunches at the pool bar were also pricey but good quality. Not much atmosphere inside the buffet restaurant, we preferred sitting outside. We didn't try the a la carte restaurants, instead we ate in one of the local beach restaurants (walk right from the hotel beach, only a few minutes walk), the food was simple but tasty and much cheaper. Buffet breakfast was very good, a lot of choice, e.g. cooked breakfast options with eggs and fresh flaky croissants, 7 types of honey, gluten free section.

We are frequent travellers, both working in the Management, and use to stay in 5 star hotels all over the world.
Sri Lanka is known for very good service, but what we experienced in this gorgeous Anantara peace haven resort, was really outstanding. The quality and service of the staff and especially their attention and behaviour was unbelievable. At each and every moment we felt as very warm welcome guests.
We would like to mention especially Sayuri from Guest Relation and our personal butler Shafni. They both did an excellent job in a such professional way that we felt at every time more than comfortable. They respect the privacy, but are capable to read in your eyes all the needs & requirements. This is top of the line and a lot of people can learn from them. They are big potentials which we would recommend to any other top hotels in the world and to promote them within Anantara.
All the staff speaks good English and it is their goal that all the guests feel comfortable at any time for any kind of questions.
The friendliness was everywhere: from housekeeping, to the gardeners and waiters - just amazing!
The resort has about 130 rooms and 30 villas (with private pool). We got an Upgrade to villa no 608 with outstanding view (thank you very much!), it was just stunning! The rooms are spacious, everything is clean and the infrastructure is perfect. The bathroom was huge and on our terrace we had our own chairs and table. There is a main swimming pool and the whole resort very green and clean with a lot of pets like birds, Squirels, peacocks,...
The breakfast buffet offers a big range and variety of European and local food. Many dishes (eggs, Dosa, Hopper, ...) are prepared on demand and very fresh. Same for the fruit juices. There is a fruit bar where you can choose every kind of fruit or vegetable and they mix it for you to a healthy fresh drink.
A special thanks also to Asanka Sampath, the Tepanyaki expert in the restaurant Verala. He presented an amazing show (the best we ever saw) and an unforgettable evening. The food he created, succeeded our expectations by far!
During our 6 nights stay in Anantara, we rented a Scooter to discover Tangalle and its environment. We made very good experience with Tusker Sri Lanka Tours (Jan), who brought us the new and clean scooter & helmets directly in the hotel. Prices are fair and the service and quality high.
For any kind of questions, reservation or organisation Shafni was there to help us. Sometimes, we got a fruit platter with greetings from him: a small fruit platter with huge positive effect!
We will never forget the treatment of Sayuri and Shafni and really hope to see you once again, in Sri Lanka or Switzerland! You touched our hearts, thanks a lot, we will keep you deep in our hearts.
We can highly recommend this great resort to everybody who likes to spend some relaxing days in a five star plus hotel with all its amenities and outstanding service!

I spent two weeks at the hotel from 12th febtuary. After a tiring drive we arrived and were met by our reception team including our own butler Piyal who after cold towels and a welcome drink showed us aroind and to our room.
The room was a delux seaviw second floor in block 5 which was almost at the end of this very spacious resort. The room itself was substantisl with lovely bathroom and all the facilities you coukd wish for including an expresso machine and wine fridge. As it was my wifes birthday on the day of our arrival there was a lovely cake and fruit bowl plus towel art on the bed.
The resort as i mentioned is lsrge in grounds with resident wildlife including peacocks lizzards lage and small and the tamest cutest squrrels you could imagine.
The total rooms however was onlyc150 so it never felt crowded either at the main restaurant or the specialty italian or asisn which were all very good. Our deal was half biard so fantastic choice of beeakfast and a dine around option which our on call butler Piyal made sure of our bookings and arranges the tuk tuk to collect us and drop off at the end of the night.
Daytime the two infinity pools never were too full, we preferred the lower level which was quieter more of an adukt area and the pool aerobics happened there every morning for those who wanted to limber up.
During the day cold water, ice pops and even suntan lotion was deliveded3to your sunbed.
We only spent a couple of says onthe beach as the waves were too strong forme. My only criticism would cbe that i like a sea swim and the currents are strong although a shirt walk around the bay and there is aneasier public beach with beach cafes and massage.
All in all we had a relaxing luxury break with good food and great service from super enthusiastic staff who all went the extra mile. Again to thank Piyal the butler who went out of his way daily to ensure our needs were met and using whatsapp he sent hints of activities and restaurant options and we wish we could have taken him home as hed make a great pa.

It's difficult to know where to begin with this review as everything was absolutely perfect. Welcomed with drums and singers, cold drinks, allocated your own guest relations host who sets up a WhatsApp group for your every whim, contactable all the time. The rooms were delicious with every luxury you could imagine with views over the hotel grounds and the Indian Ocean. The bathroom is behind a full glass panel so you can bath and overlook the ocean if you wish! The grounds are amazing with an abundance of wildlife. We went on a naturalist walk one morning and the ranger is passionate about developing the hotel kitchen gardens to supply the restaurant. He explained about how the leaves, berries and seeds are used in everyday life. He even got one of the workers to shimmy up the tree to get us giant coconuts to drink! There are loungers on the beach with waiters to serve if required. The pool area is delightful and at the pool bar you can get drinks and lunch. It's an infinity pool and there was always sufficient loungers for all guests. Yoga each morning is complimentary. There is pool, table tennis and a large spa. We had a complimentary Ayurvedic consultation during our stay. A tuk tuk ride into town costs less than £1 and the reception staff will arrange this for you. However, you will have to drag yourself away from this paradise to go there! I have reviewed the restaurants in the hotel in separate reviews, but all were first class. A wonderful 4 night stay.

Hello reader,

It’s simply a must visit destination! Loved our stay and they haven’t compromised since the last time we’ve been here .

The service was exceptional & accommodating. They looked into all our needs . We were taken care by Mr.Tharanga. He was extremely helpful and cared for all our needs . He made our trip extra smooth .

The only downside was the option of the restaurants - thanks to covid ☹️ they did not operate all of them . Nevertheless, food at journeys was great . Variety that suited ALL dietary needs. Thank you chef Naveen for the efforts you took to make us comfortable. And extra shout out to Chef Thameena for making us a lava cake smothered with salted caramel on request, we LOVED it !

In terms of safety, they have strictly followed the government’s guidelines . We felt very much safe as the rooms and dining areas were sanitized every meal and day . The pool was limited to 8-10 persons per time . The resort is extremely huge , so don’t worry about social distancing as you will be doing it effortlessly 😅

Last but not least, this resort is so beautiful. I love how nature is given utmost care . We saw many peacocks, one near our door step too ! And befriended squirrels , many birds and even reptiles. They resort has many activities that won’t keep you bored !

Thank you so much Anantara! You will be seeing us again !!

Regards
Room 606
1st - 3rd January .

Anantara presents by far one of the most beautifully curated yet biodiverse resort spaces in Sri Lanka. It is a vast 20+ acre property that is manicured from start to finish with natural elements that blend in extremely well, encouraging with it an abundance of fauna that can keep even the most attentive bird watcher occupied for hours. From the moment you enter the property you can immediately tell that Anantara Tangalle was created to celebrate the senses.

The hotel boasts by far the best health and safety practices when it comes to being well beyond compliant. They have their own engineered UV light system for disinfecting your luggage when you arrive along with clear guidelines on handwashing and sanitization points. They also create their own sanitizer on premises to ensure an additional layer of quality control. To top this off auditors have also reviewed the property for regulatory compliance just at the time of our visit.

The food service doesn't fall short at Anantara Tangalle with a vast array of delightful choices from the world to tempt you. The food was incredibly flavorful across dishes and well presented. The safety standards at dinning are also clear with the cutlery being UV treated post washing and arriving safely boxed. Anantara have their own herb and vegetable garden which again lends more freshness and flavor to the creations. The food is served by servers if there is a buffet available. There is nothing quite like sipping a signature cocktail at Il Mare whilst overlooking the ocean. This is by far one of the most beautiful dining locations on the Island.

Anantara Tangalle rooms are some of the most luxuriously appointed and intelligently laid out in the resort business. Again it's about the senses and ensuring you have the most relaxing getaway possible.

You can go for walks along the beach or the property itself, or take bike rides to soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings. There is also an onsite naturalist who can take you on guided nature walks. There is a gym, or you can play tennis or badminton. There is also a games area with a ping pong and pool table.

The service levels are of a very high standard at Anantara Tangalle with nothing being spared to ensure you have a delightful and perfect stay as possible. The staff are very attentive at all levels to ensure guest satisfaction and take feedback and resulting actions quickly. The team effort is very clear at Anantara Tangalle.

It’s the second time i’ve been to Anantara (first in 2018) with two very different experiences.
Our first wasn’t the most memorable or value for We’ money given a terrible butler being assigned to us.
It was a birthday getaway for a one night stay which would have been a memorable one unfortunately ended leaving us disappointed and angry. Our butler behaved like he had better things to do, and seemed rushed ushering us (three girls) to our pool villa.
Up on checking in we then requested for the mini bar menu, which he said he would bring to the room but never arrived. We took our chances and had wine off the mini bar with no clue how much the wine would cost.
When making dinner reservations we were told he was unable to make any given both restaurants being full. We had to eat at the buffet. Which had very poor choice btw. Not at all worth the cost per head. Any other butler would have tried harder to arrange something special since it was a special occasion. Long story short for a stay that cost around 75k rupees, our experience was poor.

The second trip was the complete opposite. We checked in with two other couples. Again for a one night stay.
We were assigned Tharanga, a pleasant and very thoughtful guy.
My friends were traveling with their 2 month old babies and he made every effort to make them comfortable. All requests were promptly looked in to.

The breakfast at Anantara is fantastic. A huge spread with lots of choice. All three meals in fact were great. I would highly recommend taking the full board option when booking.
Since Covid, rates right now are ultra tempting; highly recommend a trip here. Most weekdays you’ll have the whole beach to yourself to watch the sunrise alone. The beach is stunning!
I love the rooms too, spacious with all the amenities. The bathrooms was also large with a bath tub for a little relaxation at the end of the day.
If I were to return i’d most likely book the same rooms. The private pool is super for lazing around during the day.
Bottom line I feel the staff are very kind and attentive which made our stay was a very relaxing one. Just what we hoped for and needed!
P.S - We also spotted the same terrible butler this time and were thankful we didn’t have to endure his incompetence.

Anantara hotel is a very beautiful place, starting from the arrival to the rooms and of course the whole landscaping with beautiful gardens and some fantastic beaches and an amazing pool. Really special and highly enjoyable.

Unfortunately the service doesn't quite live up to the same level - as it seemed to be a bit unpredictable. We generally are not so bothered by the service, but here it was just very noticeable and the only place in Sri Lanka we experienced this. Examples: Drinks orders would get lost - being for dinner, breakfast or at the pool. Sometimes we got a refreshment towel before dinner, sometimes not, and sometimes 20 min into dinner. Tea and Coffee would sometimes be refilled in our room, but sometimes only partially … For the fact the the hotel was below 50% occupancy it is a concern. Two notable exceptions to this this were the Restaurants Il Mare and Verale where we enjoyed not only amazing food but als exceptional service.

We nevertheless enjoyed our 6 night stay here very much as it is a very peaceful and super friendly place to stay.
