Fafá Island Resort is a secluded 18 acre palm covered island in the South Pacific ocean just 7 kms from the Tongan mainland. It takes 90 minutes to get from the international airport to your hammock. Fafá Island is an entirely off-grid eco-resort which relies on solar electricity and rain water. We have no TVs, no motorized water-sports and the internet is only available in the library, making Fafá the perfect place to escape the busyness of the modern world. A protected marine reserve since 2013, the island is surrounded by coral reef so guests can enjoy safe swimming, snorkelling and the use of our kayaks in our crystal clear turquoise lagoon. It is an ideal retreat for anyone who wants to disconnect from their lives, relax and recharge the soul. We can arrange tours of the mainland and trips to swim with the humpback whales between July and October. Local fishing trips, massages and outer island snorkeling trips are available upon request.

Booked Fafa Island for a day trip, and asked if they had room for a night. Wish it was more than a night. From arrival Julia and her team were amazing. Got us a superior Fale which was Island stunning. With it's outdoor shower and bathroom.balcony to enjoy a drink with the sea view. The restaurant bar sits over the water at high tide so perfect for drinks and dinner. Food is also spot on. Small selection but something for all taste. Use of kayaks and snorkeling gear to explore the waters. We will be back for sure. Thank you to all the staff for there hospitality and hard work. Once borders are open you can't come to Tonga without a visit to Fafa.

The cost via Hibiscus Travel was $100TOP per person which includes return water taxi and lunch. Others using different agents were paying less. It departs the wharf at 11am and returns at 4.30pm. You will know you are in the right place when every shop in town delivers stores, bottles, water and utensils to a small motorised yacht (with a mast / sail that isn’t used). The journey out is 25 mins and very pleasant if you can sit outside, we couldn't because there was no room because of provisions and crew. On arrival you are told which areas to use and where not to go in case you disturb the resident guests. Towels are available at $10, snorkelling gear $10, Paddle boats $20 TOP etc etc. There are wooden loungers available but no cushions for them. Wifi is available at a cost to day guests but their security wouldn’t let us access it regardless. You pre-order your inclusive lunch stating when you wish to eat between 12-2pm. There are no showers available for day guests which means if you go snorkelling you can’t rinse off the salt water which meant no snorkelling for us. We are now feeling a bit like unwanted lepers in what could be a fabulous place, but we couldn’t see it because of the “guests”. This was compounded when the rain started and we couldn’t leave the bar area. On the upside, lunch was excellent and the staff very helpful. The manager even gave us 5 mins of her time but by then we felt restricted and unwanted and just wanted to leave. We did at 4.30pm and I’d recommend you try another island for a day trip, not Fafa.

We loved the peace, quiet and privacy that came with our fale along with being able to walk out to the beach, it was magical. Having no WiFi was healthy for us but maybe not for everyone. The island is quite small and you can walk around the whole thing easily. Spa was nice, though therapist was a bit chatty during treatment. Kayaks and snorkel equipment were average, but also free. We did a boat tour to the island nearby and the engine failed but a quick radio call had us into another boat! Do agree with others who say the service isn’t quite on point, it’s a very laid back vibe and you have to be expecting that. Things are a bit slower and it’s not truly a “resort”. We tried to be understanding about food selection as anything on our plates definitely had to travel, but prices were very high and meals were all pretty heavy, we got home and ate salad and veggies for days!! Would recommend bringing your own booze, coffee and snacks for your room. The island also offers day trips for people to come and hang out which I can understand are good for restaurant/business, but it does change the vibe of tranquility and privacy. Would recommend staying no more than 2-3 nights and then trying another Tonga location.

I had to be honest with my review, I always like to leave a honest review. This island is perfect for couple.perfect for families, snorkelling was amazing... the fale are nice clean and comfortable. 10 out of 10 for accommodation and the island. I could have given Fafa resort more points but the service is not terrific. it was our anniversary on the 13 of Dec. so even booking the accommodation we did mention it's our anniversary!!! no one is paying attention!! anyways on the eve of the 13 of Dec, I went and see the lady who run the resort her name is Sirig.. purchased one of their pearl necklace which is amazing! I told her it's for our anniversary!! she ignore it again and straight away reach for the eftpos machine..same night I've organised with them to bring some flowers in the morning and decorate our table for breakfast and I've booked a special table in the corner for it. this is night before our anniversary. anyways long story short... there was nothing special on the 13th of Dec.. no flower, no table and she said they forgot..the staff on that night 12 of Dec didn't leave a note for morning staff's... PAYING ATTENTION!! Sirig was aware of all the arrangements but forgot she's nice May be a bit cold..(my personal opinion) anyways I've mentioned it to the staff on that day.. Lusi who then apologized and she quickly light some candles up and get us a bottle of champagne!! Thank you Lusi who has been working there for 14 years. anyways... I still love this island.. I hope that the staff will be paying attention next time. I didn't ask for a apologies or a congratulations.. I just want them to pay attention to small things that are important to couple or tourists. a couple of tips. if you're big eater like me May be take the full board.or half board. (bring your own snacks from the main island... or you will be hungry as the food is expensive and very small portion. if your watching what you eat and this is a great place for you. food here is awesome by the way! everything is in euro so do the match before you go down. we snorkel in the Maldives and FaFa is up there in aspects of corals colours. it's a marine reserve so you will see quite a few fish. (you can't fish here as i was planning to fish) anyways my wife love this island and still enjoy it which also helps!! anyways this island is a perfect getaway for couple who need a quiet and peaceful experience!

Response from FafaIslandResort, General Manager at Fafa Island Resort

Hi Jeff, We really appreciate you taking the time to post this honest and balanced review as we’re always striving to improve the service we offer on Fafa Island. We are very sorry your anniversary was not everything you imagined and that you felt let down by our service. Unfortunately the organisation of your anniversary was an error on our part — a misunderstanding that occurred when our staff were changing shifts. We regret that it left you feeling frustrated on your special day. Our chef was delighted to hear you enjoyed our food but yes, portion sizes are subjective and it’s not easy to get it right for everyone. Many people tell us our meal sizes are too big and ask if they can have a half portion, whereas our local patrons who are used to bigger meals sometimes need to order a little more. Whatever happens, we’re always happy to whip something else up for you in the kitchen if you find you’re still hungry! Just say the word… Once again, we apologise we dropped the ball on your anniversary and thank you for writing this review. We hope we’ll have the chance to make it up to you when you and your wife next time you visit us on Fafa Island.

Took a day trip to the island and it was lovely, the views, the snorkelling. Unfortunately due to low tide we couldnt kayak. The food is okay, the place is lovely for a couples honeymoon as there are private bungalows. Must visit.
