Everything has some sort of a beginning. In this case it’s the book/film Out of Africa. I think you should start from that and then it will be easy to understand why the place is about legend, legacy and luxury as they say.
Our tent is impressive, a huge bed, comfortable armchairs, desks and lamps finished in leather 19 century safari style, all placed exactly where they should be for your convenience.
In the bathroom a bathtub made of copper and outdoor showers, yes showers, two showers not one so you wouldn’t feel crowded in case both of you would like to take it at the same time.
In the dinning area you cannot miss a coke bottle chandelier, and the resting area is full of objects that will certainly catch your attention.
Service is impeccable, drinks are free, food very good.
And for a game drive you are taken in their vehicle with their driver/guide who knows best where to show you the abundance of wildlife.

We wen to 4 luxury safari camps on our trip through Kenya and Tanzania, and this was the best. The staff were the sharpest, friendliest, and best trained. The rooms are amazing, and very private. The food was amazing, the pool area lovely, and the yoga studio and instructor amazing. And all guests greatly enjoyed the after dinner fire pit gathering spot. The guides and vehicles were of top quality, and while this area does not have as much easy to find wildlife as the Masai and Serengeti, we saw a lot, and almost never saw any of the 3 vehicles from the camp, making it feel very exclusive. The surprise breakfast and sundowner away from the hotel were extremely high-end and well served, and even had remote luxury flush lavatories that the ladies in our group appreciated. All this, plus a view of Kilimanjaro. This was the most special safari camp on out trip!

The service and food at this camp is second to none. The entire staff makes you feel welcome and is accommodating to your every need. Our meals were out of this world, the best we have ever had on any safari.
The accommodations are as stated a luxury tent. The tent is very nice with all the amenities that you could need during a stay on safari. There is a lot of privacy as other tents are far away which is nice. The few drawbacks to the room are that there is no air conditioning, it can be quite noisy at night and the power is turned off for multiple times per day. The days we were there were not overly warm; however, I would imagine there are times that the tent gets quite warm during the day. The tent is made up entirely of screens which is great for airflow; however, it does make it quite noisy at night with the sounds of the animals. A light sleeper may have trouble resting. In addition, the camp is run by generator; therefore, the power is turned off multiple times during the day. This did not impact our stay but I did want to include to make travelers aware.
The pools is very nice; the camp also has a gym and spa for your use.
Our safari guide was wonderful and gave us a great experience. He catered the safari to our likes/dislikes and was very accommodating.
The scenery throughout the park is amazing with tons of lookout points and areas for wonderful pictures. The game viewing is difficult due to the fact that the camp is in a National Park; therefore, must follow the rules of the park. There is no off roading and the animals are quite skittish. There is a lot to see but you must be patient and may only get a quick glimpse of some animals before they scurry away.
Overall a great experience.

Finch Hattons was the first stop on our 10 day African safari trip and it set the bar quite high! We were greeted warmly by our guide Julius at the airstrip and on the short drive to the camp, we saw a mama and baby giraffe and several elephants. The staff gave us a lovely welcome when we arrived and showed us to our tents, which were beautifully furnished and had an authentic feel. We did two game drives per day with Julius and he always went above and beyond to show us as much as he could. He was always enthusiastic and eager to take us on the next adventure. The meals were delicious, from the soups to the main courses and of course, the desserts. On our last evening, we were treated to a rooftop dinner above the library where bush babies scampered across the ledges. Our package included a sundowner, which is a must! The location they take you to is incredible and after the sun goes down, you can enjoy a game similar to darts with the staff. We also had a bush breakfast, which was a beautiful set up with amazing service. The staff were so friendly and always ready for conversation. And the grounds are really stunning. We would highly recommend staying here! We miss it already. Thank you to everyone at Finch Hattons who made us feel so welcomed!

The place has great food , good service and excellent rooms. The one factor that brings its overall quality down in this day and age is their lack of attention to the environment . They run a massive diesel generator from early hours in the morning to 10pm at night. There is no understanding about light pollution in the bush and from your lovely rooms you look out at lit up pathways , and other rooms , until at 10 pm the generator goes off and you're in darkness. At 5 am it comes on again wakes you up. In todays world and in Tsavo there is plenty of sun and solar would work a treat .
Therefore having such great attention to detail in the rooms and serving great food is admirable but if you want to be world class , you have to value the environment and here is the shortcoming .
To end on a positive note the staff were friendly , the food was great , they have a great spa , swimming pool so the lodge is very comfortable . Rooms are well thought out and linen is first class.

This was a wonderful downtime for my husband and I. Finch Hatton offered tranquillity and much need time to stop our busyness and appreciate all the land and animals around us, as well as each other. Evans, our guide driver was super knowledgeable and personable as his expertise shown through searching for the animals and birds he has come to know. Mary had hands of an Angel in the massage I chose. Seriously, she’s the best masseuse therapist I have ever had!! Alex sang and played the guitar like a spell binder. All the evening guys had interesting points to show on our walks back to the tent. The tower allows a view of all the evening activities that the animal want to show off. We loved the family of elephants that decided to share in our evening. We stayed in Tent 12. William, the manager, chose wisely in placing us there. The “tent” is a gem in a vast wilderness. It’s a real luxury. It’s not that far of a walk, as others have mentioned, to anywhere in the camp. Food was wonderful, especially the soups. Sometimes the portions are a bit small, but asking for another portion was never denied. The staff surprised us with a star gazer meal at the end. We could enjoy each other and appreciate the night skies. Our only complaint was when settling the bill, the company insists on a 2% credit card charge to cover the transaction of using a CC. Given the cost that is taken to come to this area and enjoy this type of top of line amenities, the company could take that loss. Over all, Finch Hattons is really an oasis.

My family and friends thoroughly basked in the care, sumptuous food, and modern-plush-safari suites abundantly supplied by the entire Finch Hatton's team. We drove down to Tsavo West from Nairobi looking forward to a welcome break after a long year, but could not have expected to leave Finch Hatton's with so much longing for our next visit and feeling thoroughly relaxed. Camp GM, Jonathan so to it that all our needs were met. Dining under the stars at the rooftop dining room, knowledgeable bush guide, our wishes being anticipated at every turn including care of our children by a dedicated staff member, and simply basking within the environs of your well appointed camp left us in absolute bliss! Worth every penny.

Some parts of our long awaited group trip were outstanding, but overall we felt let down by the penny pinching and lack of generosity of the management. This is the first and only safari camp (in 30 years of travel) that only offered one game drive per day. Only the driver - no spotter. It was heartbreakingly dry in Tsavo and sadly this was the least amount of game we have ever seen in three days. Everything was chargeable, even sparkling water - but also the additional extras included in all of the other camps (sundowners, bush breakfasts etc).
The staff were warm, professional and courteous. Breakfasts were a highlight with many gluten free options. The staff were helpful in offering us dishes that were not on the set lunch menu (eg changing the cucumber soup to a soup that the group members preferred).
The highlight for us was a private dinner in an open, outdoor rooftop, where we could see the stars. The most memorable and fun night.

We were on a whirlwind 3 week long safari around Kenya. Finch Hattons was the perfect ending to a perfect safari. Firstly the camp is incredible! Beautiful, spacious, impeccable and well thought out. The tents are luxurious and spacious, beds and linens top notch. THE FOOD - OMG be prepared for some delicious and amazing food served by very well trained staff. The DAWAS! Treat yourself to one of the best Dawas you will experience outside of Talisman in Nairobi. The massages at the spa are a great treat after either a long flight to Kenya or bouncing around in a safari vehicle for weeks. You can sit on your veranda and see an array of wildlife without ever leaving camp. I truly cannot recommend a stop at FH enough. You may not encounter the expansive wildlife as you will in the Mara, but you will have a different sort of safari experience with the most beautiful landscapes around. It truly is something I feel safari goers should put on their check list. FH also offers a gorgeous “family” tent, and a “presidential” tent. We had tent 16 furthest away from the main common areas which offered great views of the water and animals who visited daily.

Mtito Andei route is the best option as the other route is under construction.
Good Day Cliffton,
This would be depend on the season which you would be travelling. The roads are generally passable during the dry season.
Hello,
Gamedrives are included in the rates. Basically, there are two game drives per day; morning and afternoon. However, there are other optional activties which come at an extra cost eg..night game drives, crater hikes, nature walks.
Yes, they are see through unless they have recently changed them. Not really unusual for the African Lodges, as we have stayed in several that were designed this way. That said, I would love to see them offer more privacy.
Hello,
To be exact, the distance from Finch Hattons to Chyulu Hills is 22km - an hour-long drive.
