#24 of 1 069 Speciality lodging in Rio de Janeiro
Guesthouse in Leme with 5 private bedrooms, with a splendid exceptional view on Copacabana beach and Corcovado. Ten minutes walk from the beach the guesthouse with garden is located in the small peaceful and secure community [favela] of Babilonia. Your stay in our small guesthouse with top Latino restaurant will offer you a unique experience in Rio, staying in the small and safe favela of Babilônia. The guesthouse is located in one of the safest areas of Rio as local community laws prohibit theft, assaults and harassment of women. If you do not like to walk up stairs for 5 minutes to reach our quiet place with amazing view, look for another place. Although nothing compared to the Himalayas, the walk uphill has been an obstacle for some guests.

Estrells is a guest house in the Babilônia favela up Leme. We passed ( a family of 5) there 4 nights and it would be better to stay 1 more ! The favela is sure but is a favela, so if you don’t like to have an experience with this kind of life , isn’t the place for you. Reach Estrelas takes 10 minutes by mototaxi but they are safe too. The staff is friendly, Bibi is fantastic and even if she doesn’t speak English she can find the way to speak with you. The house is in the forest and, if you like , you can arrange a trekking for a fantastic view on Rio. The restaurant on the top have a fantastic view too and great food... guests also are very nice at the restaurant . Finally, we had a great time in Rio , thanks to all the staff , we will remain in our heart in Italy ( Pipoca too).

After traveling to many cities in 17 countries, I am not one to pick favorites but I think Rio could definitely be it. When I think of Rio, I will always think of Estrelas du Babilonia. I travel always wanting to support women owned businesses. Estrelas du Babilonia began by two climate activists and Bibi, a Columbian immigrant to Brazil is currently running the show. The space itself - 80% of the place is solar powered, with compost, herb garden, up-cycled infrastructure. Two communal kitchens, garden space and upper deck with an incredible view overlooking the ocean, hills and Christo. The public space right above has an open view that’s incredible. The restaurant – opened Friday, Saturday and Sunday when I was there in May (busier season it’s open more I think). Bibi and the other two woman who cook and serve at the restaurant set out to bring out the best of Latina flavors. A visual experience as much as it a delicious experience. Bibi stresses that absolutely nothing is made from industrial ingredients. AND she brews her own beer! I am not a fan of Saisons but hoping an IPA is in the future! Music – Sunday nights a group of Basa Nova musicians play on the terrace. Wanting to embrace the talented people in the community the space is located, the musicians all live nearby. Unfortunately I don’t speak Spanish or Portugese, but from the few conversations Bibi and I had over either google translate or from another guest, she is incredible. The work she is doing is the type of tourism I want to continue to support. I can’t wait to come back.

Estrelas da Babilonia is a special place. Bibi, the host, is an absolutely wonderful person and an amazing host. Estrelas sits atop a tranquil pacific favela in Leme; but do not let that scare you, we felt totally safe for our entire stay. The hill is quite a climb, but the view is absolutely worth the effort (and for R$ 3 you can get a mototaxi!). The pousada is a very interesting and alternative place. Bibi maintains an active effort to minimise environmental impact by using solar energy and recycling/composted as much as possible. As well, most of the pousada seems to be constructed from recycled material and it looks ingenious. The room was clean and kitchen suited our needs. We ate in the restaurant too and LOVED Bibi's Columbian style cooking. Must visit if even to eat there - the views are absolutely stunning and the atmosphere is very cool and artistic! 10/10 <3

Where to start?! We absolutely loved our visit and wish we could have stayed longer. The atmosphere is so relaxing and the hostel is set in a corner of paradise. Yes it is a steep walk/hike up through the favela but the locals are all cool and not at any point did we feel in danger. The wall art is worth the walk alone! Pol is one of the most fascinating men we have ever met. He gave us an education of the history of the favela and why the community protect it. Thank you! I wish I could’ve taken Pipoca the doggy onto the next stage of our travels but alas Bibi would not allow it! Visit with an open mind and an open heart and both will be better for it. And if you can find time to help the local community projects as we did you will leave having made a small difference.

Stayed 2 nights at Estrelas da Babilonia, felt incredibly safe the entire stay. I'm very happy I made the decision to stay in the favela as it literally has shown me a different side of the world. The atmosphere in the favela is good and it's a safe walk to the guesthouse / restaurant. Just follow the stars..... The food is good and the rooms are tidy and comfortable. I slept great both nights. Highly recommendable experience, that you will never forget!
