We stayed in a suite on the top floor that was really spacious and well maintained. It was also good value for money. The hostel is operated by a lovely lady and her excellent cleaning and reception staff. Would stay here again for sure. Vivian and Sami

Stayed here for 4 nights in a mixed bed dorm. The bunk beds were comfy, large lockers and much needed Aircon. The rooms had key access cards for security as well. The staff were all friendly, and gave advice if asked. Despite only having 2 showers for males and 2 for females for all the dorms, I never had to queue. The hostel is only a 20-25 minute walk away from sugar loaf mountain and 5 mins away from botofogo metro station which is very handy for getting to Copacabana or Ipanema or central Rio. There are supermarkets near by as well as lots of bars and restaurants on Rua Nelson Mandela. The only slight complaint we had which wasn't that big of an issue, was the bar area which had unnecessarily loud music on and no one in the bar area. People tended to chill out on the sofas in the other room. Over all though, a good hostel which you can easily access the sights of Rio from.

The team at the Gaia comfort hostel is very helpful and actually made our stay in Rio great. Jonathan provided some really good information about the area of Rio and gave us the advice to book a domestic bus to arraial do cabo, what was a amazing place to visit. Thanks for helping us and phoning agencies and so on ;) Only thing are the beds and cleanliness which can improve. Best regards, Daniel

Good location in Botafogo, lots of bars and restaurants nearby and the Uber’s are cheap to get to the local attractions. Staff were a bit odd (not sure if things got lost in translation because we don’t speak Portuguese) - they hung around the hostel the whole time, it was never clear if they were working or living there. Information they gave us wasn’t very clear and they hugely over charged us for extending our stay by 1 night. Breakfast not included and R$50 !!

Gaia is located in a grittier part of Rio. Close to Botafogo metro (3min walk) cafe and bar options. Bilingual staff are very help, speaking a good level of english. Tours can be arranged from reception although it's very easy to arrange these things independently. Private rooms are spacious and clean with a private ensuite and i was surprised that the room even was equipped with a walk in robe for hanging clothes and storing luggge. Hot water was almost too hot at times, the hostel regulates the water temp. Aircon worked well, skylight and ability to ventilate th room by opening window on ceiling was a bonus. Rooms are impressively swipe card access secure. Breakfast for 15R is good value with ample selection of fruit, toast, cheese, ham, jams, cake, scrambled eggs, juice, tea and coffee. The hostel is tastfully decorated in a neutral palate, cool music is piped through the foyer which adds to its laid back vibe. They also have salsa nights during the week and make the best caipirinhas in town. Downside: If you're a light sleeper, be warned. The hostel is in a noisy neighbourhood. Bars are right next door which blare loud music on weekend nights until early morning. Expect little or no sleep fri/saturday nights. Traffic noise is terrible. Buses roar down the street and traffic builds early. This place would benefit from soundproofed windows.Towels are threadbare and rough. Best bring your own. Lastly, keep an eye on your credit card statement if you book through a website. They pre-approve payment prior to arrival so check your account before you check in, otherwise you may end up paying twice. Overall a pleasant enough stay for the coin. Staff are very welcoming and make an effort to provide travel recommendations.
