Great location, just up from Lapa arches (Carioca Aqueduct) and a 2 minute walk from the Escadaria Selarón. Lapa is the place to be for partying, lots of bars, restaurants, street vendors (food and drinks) and street salsa music. On our first visit we had some really friendly staff and very helpful. All of the staff spoke English. We arrived at 10pm and by 10:30pm we had already been invited out to discover the Samba/carnival street music. We stayed in the “Oscar” room (all room names are names) for 2 nights, which is a private room with bunk beds, a small table and chair. The room has a big wall fan and ceiling fan, along with the window which cools the room down. Showers and toilets not too far from room (but no hot water for the showers). The room overlooks the bar area, there is no music etc allowed after 10pm. We liked it that much we stayed again in the “Barbara” room, again another private room with bunk beds. This room had aircon and a fan, it was on another level to the rest of the rooms and had a nice outside area with seating to chill out. You get a free breakfast, which is good when backpacking. Juices, choice of cereal, bread, cheese, ham and fruits. The only bad thing about our second stay was the guy behind reception did not really know what was going on and was not as accommodating as the other staff, if you stay there I hope you don’t have to deal with him. Which is why I rated it lower than I had if the staff had been the same as the first visit. Also the wifi was not good and kept dropping out and running so slowly.

Great breakfast and always varied. Nice fruit. The staff are very accommodating. Comfy couches and netfliz. Close to Lapa area. The area is dodgy so mind belongings and don't leave the hostel with valuables.

Couldn't ask for a better roof over my head in Rio! The hostel is very welcoming and warm, people working in there go out of their way to help you! Very nice staff and the hostel is located in a very nice area close to everything you need, shops, bars and a metro to other areas in rio. Special shout out to Alex and Bianca who work in the hostel, lovely people you have nice conversations with! Definitely recommend this hostel if you're staying in Rio!

I had a very nice stay at Membembe hostel. The dorm was good and space, with lockers and a small balcony. Staff was very kind and helpful. Breakfast ok, but simple. Location is good, although you have to have in mind it’s not very close to any beach, but on the plus side it’s fairly close to Lapa and the city center, and of course cozy Sta. Teresa with cool bars and restaurants. All in all a very good place to stay in Rio.
