On arrival we were upgraded to a superior room, which was great as we found the superior room quiet small, so our standard room would probably not have been big enough for us and our 2 bags. Having said that, the rooms were spotless, the beds big and very comfortable. We would love coffee making facilities in the room, but that doesn’t seem to happen often in South America. Breakfast and coffee were ok. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the location was great. Within easy walk to the Copacabana beach and near lots of eateries and shops.

The hotel is located in centrum of Lapa, which is nice. But the room was really small and not fresh at all. Air condition doesn’t work, neither does the wifi. Smell is really bad (mold i think). Everything just seems dirty. Plus the room was not soundproof, we can hear every little word from someone outside. AND some idiot is trying to play the piano and it sound like he is in our room (and he is really bad at it). Wouldn’t recommend anyone to stay here.

This is one of our very few BAD experiences with hotels as we don't expect much: we are pretty independent (no lengthy conversations with the staff), usually only staying in the room to sleep. So, what is BAD in this hotel: - STAFF (one rude and clueless, one nice and clueless and one nice and helpful receptionist). The first night at midnight the maid came in. The second night we were called at 11 pm to pay our bill while we stayed for 3 nights. Leaving USD as guarantee and paying the next day turned into the worst argue of mine in a hotel (and probably only to date)). /to be factual the issue began because we had 2 reservations: one for the first night and another one for the second and third night/. Paying for the hotel room at the end with cash in reals took about 20 minutes. One of them speak none, one basic and one good English. Much of the conversations were in basic Portuguese. - AIR-CO (there is air-co but it blows so much air and it is so loud that it's almost impossible to sleep) What is OKAY about the hotel (why is it not 1 star): - location next to the Escadaria Selaron (the artistic stairs) and in an authentic neighbourhood with much of police presence - not that it matters a lot for us but the TV functioned with one good English channel (HBO Cinemax?) and we even found some really cheap porn movie. That was funny and memorable. - Our room was cleaned twice during the afternoon when we weren't in the home. Nice surprise to arrive back to a clean room with fresh towels. - The shower was hot and not water-shortage (that we experienced in Sao Paulo).

I am a budget traveler and am always looking for a deal, but this hotel looks like a place where they'd film a movie about crackheads. The rooms were run down, dank and depressing and yes, my room had BED BUGS (and I have the bites to prove it). At first I saw one bug on the bed after I checked in. I wasn't sure what bed bugs looked like and didn't really worry too much because, yes, it's a third world country and there might be a bug or two. Then that night, I woke up at 2 am and saw another bug on the bed. Then another and another and another. Finally I called the front desk, told them about the problem and asked for another room. They said they didn't have one. When I said I had to change hotels they suddenly found another room for me. I moved all my stuff in the middle of the night into the new room - it was a little scary because the doors open to the outside and I didn't feel safe in this hotel or this area. I didn't see another bed bug in the second room, but the bathroom was filled with a bunch of flying insects. After I switched rooms I realized I'd left my passport in the safe in the first room. They let me back into the old room to retrieve it and lo and behold, the bed had been re-made up as if they were going to rent it out again to another guest - despite them knowing about the bugs!! In the morning I switched hotels pronto to the hotel next door - Vina del Mar. It is also a budget hotel but looked like the Ritz Carlton compared to the Hotel Americano. Strangely, it is under the same management and is comparable in price so I'm not sure why the standards are so different. I was much happier there. The rooms were clean and updated and I felt much safer. The neighborhood is a little sketchy. It's walking distance to the clubs and nightlife of Lapa, but I probably wouldn't stay in Lapa again. And DEFINITELY not at the flea bag Hotel Americano. Totally disgusted.

Very friendly and helpful receptionists each time I passed by the front desk. That and its easy location in Lapa would definitely convince me to return and recommend to others. Note that Lapa is lively at night as you will both see and hear at all hours of the day & night. There are always police just steps outside the hotel. They casually make sure the nearby red staircase monument area is safe. (Though I never felt unsafe anyway in that area.) The facilities in the room were adequate (bed, bathroom, etc.) I want to mention that the cleaning lady worked very hard and the way the rooms were cared for showed her outstanding dedication! My only complaint is that I got scalded during my shower when the cold water unexpectedly turned off for a few seconds. (Extremely hot water!) This happened twice. Note: breakfast was not available/served during my 3 day stay in July 2013.
