Functional accommodation only a 5 minute walk from Cacete Metro station. A great location for our stay in Rio for the Olympic Games. We stayed in a private room on the second floor and while our room was reasonably clean the beds are very basic (a firm waterproof mattress!). Some noise from live entertainment at the bar next door can be heard some nights. The bathroom was functional but the shower drain did noticeably smell - hence a can of air freshener conveniently provided in the room! After a few days this had become quite off-putting. The free wifi was very intermittent in our room but a better signal was available in the TV area or reception. A computer with a slow internet connection is provided in the games room also. Service in reception was English speaking, helpful and friendly throughout. Breakfast was basic and not as extensive as many of the other hostels we have stayed in in Brazil for a similar price. A little disappointing. It's also important to note that a luggage storage facility is not available to you once you have checked out at 11am. Given a 10pm flight that day we found this highly frustrating and very surprising. With a tour booked for the day we ended up paying a standard room fare (at a higher price due to the Olympics!) for them to store our bags in a store room. We found this costly and for a hostel of this size extremely disappointing. Ultimately the most disappointing hostel we have stayed in in Brazil.

I stayed here recently to run run in the Rio half marathon. It is a very basic place; Rooms: Two single beds that we pushed together for a double (didn't have a double available on this busy weekend). Very basic furniture, air con and a tv and one double socket. The paint was peeling from the wall in chunks in places. Bathroom was fine. Shower, toilet and sink. No problem. This was a 3rd floor room and there was no life. Other Rooms: Nice activity, pool, tv room. Spacious and fun place with a crowd. Breakfast: Just off the reception area. Clean and tidy with a fridge you can use to store your own cold drinks/foodstuffs. We didn't cook our own so don't know if you can do so. The breakfast - bread, jams, cakes, meats, cheese, cereal, fruit and such like. Plenty of it and help yourself coffee. Good quality. Location: Ten minute walk from the beach, great location overall. No complaints. Staff: Very helpful, English speaking and very nice. Not a bad word to say about them. Price: 561 Real for two of us for three nights. That is 187 Reals per night for two or $54/£38. wifi: Worked in the room and was included. Summary: Not a bad price for two with breakfast included. Only downside was that the rooms were not particularly good in my opinion. However the breakfast, location and helpful staff made up for that and made it a very pleasant stay. I would use it again.

The hostel is located in Catete which is a really good spot between the beach and party life of Rio. I only paid around 18€ including breakfast during carnival which is awesome. I was a lucky one who got a four bedroom dorm with a noisy AC. The other rooms mostly just have a fan with more beds inside. The community room is not air conditioned which results in not many people meeting there. They would do better to charge a little bit more and then provide air conditioning in every room.

Spent the weekend in Rio at Republica Hostel. It seems to be a place packed with backpackers, with its typical mood. First impression was not at all great. Coudn't even have a bath since they had just run out of water, and it took way longer than the 30minutes stated to solve the deal. When the water came back, the toilet flush was out of order, but they did fix it fast enough. Breakfast is not very fancy: hot milk, decent cofee, ham, cheese, bread, some bananas and papayas. The night shift is covered by a kind of rough guy, not very simpathetic. Location is alsome, though. Less then 100m far from the subway station which will take you almost anywhere you'd like to go. A cab to Lapa (bohemian district) will cost you around R$10,00 (US$4,00). Considering the price, and comparing to hotel prices in Rio, it is an average option.

A popular option with backpackers as evidenced by it being so crowded yet this hotel suffers from jaded and dingy decor, erratic access to hot water and generally suffering from noise problems from it's own residents as well as the street noise. Ok if you're in the party set though not for those seeking a quiet retreat.
