No hot water, No Wi-Fi working, located up a long steep hill in Favella, where you hear gunshots, and the police pulled a gun on a black guy staying at Hostel. To top it all I left some gear with them, based on promises it would be safe, but it went missing!
We stayed here for NYE which meant it was a little expensive but so was everywhere in Rio at that time. Really cool hostel in an awesome Oscar Niemeyer designed house with amazing views of Copacabana and the Babilonia Favela. Even with the hostel being in a favela we always felt safe. We had an unreal night viewing the fireworks on Copacabana beach from the terrace at the hostel. The staff were also very friendly an helped us out whenever they could. The room we stayed in was spacious enough however the fan didn't do much for the intense heat and the wifi signal wasn't the best.
We paid 662 US$ for a queensize bed for 4 days. Very overpriced. It was during Rio carnaval 2018 but still it was overpriced and it didn’t deserve it at all. Was not worth it. This hostel offers poor quality. Big rooms, smells like wet rainy forrest. No breakfast, but kitchen is available. Bring your own shampoo and handsoap. You do get towels and when we asked for more, they gave us new clean ones. No cleaning. I asked to get our room cleaned as it got dirty and sandy walking barefeet. They said they would but they never did. When I asked again they gave me a brom so I had to clean the room myself. We met later a group in Rio who stayed in their own private hotel suite and they paid less than we did and their hotel was nicer. VERY. Our hostel host told us where to go and where the great bloc parties would be but we realised maybe they had different taste than the rest of us and their recommendation was very subjective. They sent us to gay parade which consisted of less than 500 people. At the same time there were other great places to go that we missed and wasted taxi on the gay parade. In total, I would recommend to get a hostel or hotel closer to areas that you will spend most of your time at. Chill Hostel is located at a hill. It takes 5-7 minutes to walk down but 25 minutes to walk up. In sunny warm days it’s really bad as there are no shadows to walk in and it’s very warm. Unless you are willing to spend a taxi every time you want to go up. The hostel was not a horror place to stay at but I am very sure there are plenty of other places and better and with fair prices and treatment. …
Booked this place last minute after we decided to stay longer in Rio, wish we had stayed here to begin with! Such a great location and away from the hustle and bustle of Copacabana.... it’s close to the beach and plenty of food around, helpful staff and good facilities.
We loved this hostel. Such a relaxed vibe. Kitchen and bathroom could have been a bit cleaner. Staff friendly. Rooms nice and big. Would definitely return if in rio. The hill to it is a tough walk however good exercise and cool to see locals hanging about etc.
