Ace Hotel Kyoto lives in a part new build and part historic structure that was once home to a beloved landmark telephone company, designed in partnership with our longtime friends Commune Design and the legendary architect Kengo Kuma. Our first hotel in Asia, Ace Hotel Kyoto lives in the cultural epicenter of Japan, a place revered for its abundance of art, craft and nature. There’s an inspired Lobby with a dedicated art gallery, three distinct restaurants by award-winning culinary partners, 24-hour gym, flexible event spaces and a verdant garden courtyard. There’s also the first Stumptown Coffee Roasters cafe in Japan, and we’re within walking distance to cultural landmarks like the Nishiki Market, Kyoto Art Center and Kamesuehiro, the iconic 200-year old confectionary.

Ace Hotel Kyoto garners praise for its spacious and artistically decorated rooms, complete with comfortable furnishings and distinctive amenities like record players. Many guests appreciate its central location, which eases exploration of Kyoto's sights and sounds. While the service receives accolades for efficiency, some visitors mention a perceived lack of warmth.
The hotel's atmosphere strikes a chord with its hip and artistic ambiance. However, opinions on value are mixed; some find it well-priced, whereas others consider certain services overpriced. Cleanliness, particularly of the modern bathrooms, is frequently lauded.

As a big fan of Kengo Kuma the Ace Hotel was a must stay and I have to say it only exceeded expectation. Even the amazing photos won't do it justice because the craftsmanship and quality behind every corner matches the most luxury hotels Kyoto can offer but at a much friendlier price point.
The rooms are generous in space with a unique mid-century inspired interior mixed with Japanese craftsmanship. The amenities are lovely with a refreshing designed as everything else. You will even find a nice hand-crafted traditional Japanese broom at the entrance which I appreciated.
We started with cocktails on the terrace overlooking the generous courtyard. Nice outdoor spaces are hard to come across in Japanese cities and this is one of the best. The cocktails were delicious with nice seasonal Japanese accents (ordered the Shiso cocktail and later the one with Kinobi Gin).
Piopico offered probably the best taco in Kyoto. Having lived in California I am used to good mexican food which is challenging to come by even in Tokyo, but the quality of food in this restaurant was on par with some of the best places I've been back in the US.
I had the American style breakfast at Maurice, which came served in beautiful Hasami Porcelain and a refreshing break from the traditional Japanese breakfasts that are often served in Kyoto. Wonderfully authentic and generous serving size.
All in all I had a wonderful stay through and through and happily recommend it to anyone that loves good design, architecture, relaxed vibes and good food.

We have stayed in one of the Suite, it was just perfect !
We could relax in our private sleeping area (+ bath and shower) and we could also have some friends to enjoy listening good vinyl music.
Eco friendly, I could appreciate the non plastic accessories (bamboo teeth brush, paper water bottle...).
I quite appreciated the selection of the furnitures and decoration inside the room mixing different styles and traditional Japanese technics (Indigo fusuma).
Also the commun facilities, with good choice of restaurants, the café, the great terrace and the DJ booth...
I shouldn't forget the most important... they have a wonderful team who brings you international and open mind feeling in center of Kyoto !

Located in the center of it all the ACE is the perfect place to call home while you visit Kyoto. With awesome food, coffee and spirits just steps from your rooms door you don't have to venture far to start things off right. There is even a subway stop smack dab in the middle of the place so on those less than perfect weather days you can easily stay dry as you venture out. Having lived in the PNW we enjoy our Stumptown coffee and their sweets with a local Kyoto twist are simply perfect. Whether you are just passing through or a Kyoto local you will always feel welcome and walk away feeling inspired. Thank you ACE!

I truly enjoyed the lively atmosphere with DJs, a day of the dead, and a special event where we could have drinks with our dog in the STUMPTOWN café. The rooms were quiet, the showers with a sufficient quantity of water and the scent of UKA soaps made us feel very relaxed. I was also pleased that it is plastic free.
We have no complaints at all. We really appreciated the extra towels, blankets and step stools for my kids, pajamas and humidifier for my wife, etc., which we were able to provide by contacting the hotel from our end.

What can I say but perfection! The Ace Hotel was probably our favourite hotel while staying in Japan.
As soon as you walk into the foyer you know you have chosen a cool, beautifully appointed and funky hotel.
The staff are young, friendly and are only too happy to want to help. They really make the hotel with their eagerness to please and assist.
The hotel itself is so stunning with artistic features, stunning rooms with beautiful amenities. Our room even included its own vinyl record player and guitar in case you were compelled to write your own song (it even included music paper so you could write the actual music!)
We chose a deluxe King room which was a nice size for two people and did not feel cramped at all. There was free WiFi a great TV, air conditioning and also an air purifier.
Loved the bathroom, which included stunning bath products by Uka, to use in the Japanese soaking bath. The bathroom product were also all bio degradable.
The gym was my favourite part, on our trips many hotels offered a gym, that were really bad. The Ace Hotel had a really good tray of equipment and was also clean and they provided great sanitisation equipment.
The hotel has coffee shops and many stores down stairs and is also close to SO much shopping and sight seeing places. Within the actual hotel though you also have Piopiko
Contemporary tacos and cocktails from Michelin-ranked rockstar Chef Wes Avila, Mr. Maurice’s Italian their rooftop ode to Italian-American cooking and Mr. Maurice’s Rooftop Bar their rooftop ode to Italian-American cooking serving pasta, wood fire pizza, wine and cocktails. For an early morning pick me up you can also visit Stumptown Coffee Roasters.
After all my friends who had been to Kyoto told me it was their favourite place, I now know exactly why, what an incredible place. We would definitely come back and suggest this amazing hotel. It was one of the best parts of the holiday.

My two night stay was one of the most memorable hotel stays in recent memory. The warm and attentive staff were incredibly gracious with just the right amount of casual, which is such a treat in Japan, especially Kyoto, where service staff can often be overly formal. There is just so much attention to detail in the execution of this hotel, from the eclectic vinyl music curation in the rooms (each with their own turntable!), to the commendable no plastic initiatives. They have really gone above and beyond to connect with and become an essential member of the creative community...no small feat for any outsider in Kyoto, It’s a testament to the passion put into the effort. Amazing margaritas at the taco spot, brilliant breakfast at Maurice, world class coffee at Stumptown, shopping bazaar connected to the hotel. I found myself spending more time in the hotel than I care to admit for visiting a city such as Kyoto. They have a lot of really cool events and parties such as bean bag movie nights etc. Can’t wait to go back. Can’t recommend enough.

Our visit to Kyoto and 3 night stay at this hotel was driven by a pop up dinner reservation to Noma Kyoto (by Chef Rene Redzepi), held within this modern hotel. Everyone was very helpful and attentive and everyone spoke very good English. It is located about a block away from the subway, K-Line, at the Karasuma Oike station.
We stayed in the Deluxe King room on the 7th (top) floor. The bed was very comfortable. They provided a thin but weighty cover over the comforter which provided an excellent level of warmth. The bathroom was fabulous, as it offered the special Japanese toilet (heated seat and bidet) and a separated shower and tub enclosure.
We added the breakfast meals to our room. In the restaurant, you can choose Western meals or a Japanese breakfast; both were very good.
This place is pretty hip: artist displays, open business area in the lobby, cool Taco days, shops below, cool music vibes and vinyl record players in the rooms.

We enjoyed our stay at the Ace Hotel and had no real complaints. The hotel was very affordable and has a lot of positive energy. The staff were all young, and extra kind and helpful. The breakfast was a set menu, fresh and delicious, served in a bright stylish room.
The hotel restaurants were a bit odd with challenging hours for opening. One was Mexican and the other was an Italian bar. It was pleasant because we could sit outside and have a drink looking down onto a garden, but "Mr. Maurice's" Italian drinks menu was hilarious and not remotely Japanese.
The neighbourhood is great for walking to trendy restaurants and shopping. The hotel had bicycles and e-bikes, free for guests, which were fantastic for exploring the city and discovering the temples and the bamboo forest. This is a great way to see these sights because the entire journey becomes a cultural adventure.
The gym is decent and reasonably well equipped.
The hotel has a hip, open concept lobby, and a general vibe that reminded us of the trendy Camper hotel in Barcelona. The rooms were small and basic, with wool hunting-camp style blankets on the beds, and other funny and quirky decor choices like this that contributed more to promoting that hip style than creating comfort.
Entirely happy with our stay but I would say the high points for us were the breakfast, the bikes and the neighbourhood.

We stayed as a family of four in the Family Tatami room. It was so spacious for essentially 4 adult-sized people to lounge around in. Our teenage boys loved strumming on the guitar and the record player added great vibe. The bathroom area was huge and all four of us could use it without too much drama or waiting. Location was great - a quick hop by subway to Kyoto Station to catch the Shinkansen. The historic building complex houses great quirky shops and you would see lots of locals coming by. We used the complimentary bikes (choice of e bike or manual) to cycle along the riverway. As coffee lovers, we purchased the Bottomless Cup coupon which allows unlimited coffee orders from Stumptown Roasters (a cool cafe located in hotel lobby) - it was a dangerous caffeine overload though! It’s worth it if you think you’ll be having three coffees per day.
Overall it was a most memorable stay that won the approval of our teenagers!
