Kyoto's famed craftsmanship and celebrated history pervade every inch of this fully restored century-old property, from the woodblock-print designs in guestrooms to the refined Kaiseki meals, landscaped grounds, and timeless setting in Arashiyama, a former playground of cour nobles.
Star ratings are intended to indicate the general level of features, amenities, and services to expect. This property is classified according to Giata.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
This hotel is located off the river and requires a boat or a private car to get to. The area is beautiful particularly in the fall with the maple leaves and is highly recommended. The facility has 25 rooms and the service is impeccable. Each room has a view of the river and air condition, And beds are Japanese style and Wifi is fast and excellent. Check-in is 3 PM and check out is noon. There is no safe in the rooms but security is on premise and it would be difficult for the given location. The food is excellent and I would recommend to eat at a form of Michelin restaurant at least one night. Although expensive, American standards and food is exceptional and portions are Japanese style. We also recommend that you consider having breakfast in house. I would recommend that you arrive to this location and visit all the necessary temples other sites before you arrive here. We recommend at least 1 to 2 nights would be preferred. We also recommend that you consider cancellation insurance because there's no cancellation policy once you book.

I only spent two nights at Hoshinoya Kyoto during a 5 nights stay in the city. It’s a shame as this may very well be one of my favourite hotels in the world.
I have written before about the fantastic hospitality at Hoshinoya Tokyo, and the Kyoto one does not disappoint in that regard. The commute to the hotel, by boat alongside the Katsura river, immediately makes one feel like an explorer, slowly getting to a secret cove, harbouring the promise of a unique experience.
We stayed in the ‘corner’ suite that features on all the pictures. The reasonably small supplement to pay for this suite is worth every Euro / Pound / Dollar. Breakfast in our private living room, surrounded by momiji leaves caressed by the morning sun, and the relaxing sound of the river a few meters away, felt nothing short of magical.
In the hustle and bustle of Kyoto, the tucked away Hoshinoya is that secret alcove where you may moor, relax, and recharge quietly in typical Japanese style.

Hoshinoya Kyoto was more than expected, in particular after reading some of the negative reviews. The grounds are spectacular and our room was so relaxing. This was a special trip with my two daughters and myself. They arranged 3 extremely comfortable beds in our room and we had a very nice sitting room with a gorgeous view. The staff was gracious and ever so accommodating. We were able to walk into town and enjoy the sights and food in town and took the boat back to the resort in the early evening. Overall a fabulous experience.

Hoshinoya Kyoto was a huge disappointment. The rooms are dated, the service perfunctory, the meals uninspiring and the bearings cheap. Yes, cheap for a hotel that charges upwards of USD1000! They serve whipped butter at breakfast, which across my travels in Japan is the stuff budget inns use, served a ridiculous tiny portion of 2 tiny sausages with a lot of leaves and asks you to pay when you ask for milk! ONE hard boiled egg was served without asking how you like it done and fruit was a pathetic quarter of a quarter of a kiwi. Dinner was very ordinary, and honestly quite similar (maybe even lousier) to their other lower end hotels like KAI. The doors in the rooms are ridiculously low and the staff explained that they are more suited to Japanese height. It would be nice if the staff had also warned about the crows that steal from right under your nose, or the mosquitoes that are emerging as early as mid-Apr, but they didn't. There is no hot spring or spa, and there really is nothing to do but sit around, which is fine if the service is more refined and proactive. The view is stunning but will be appreciated only if you want to pay a lot of money in an old ryokan with cheap management and very mediocre service. Service has a generous tinge of the "we are a very expensive joint so please take care of our stuff when you are here.' arrogance. Staff chides u for moving a chair to face the view because of their precious tatami mat. Price - USD1000 upwards and your eternal regret

We were pretty excited to go here since we really enjoyed our time in Hoshinoya Tokyo , the resort is so far away so if this is your first time in KYOTO this is not the place to stay, the whole hotel is in bad state and staff are rude and not welcoming. Contemplating the hotel is SO far away (50 min to town) you would think they would have a spa, sauna, or at least an onsen, BUT there is NOTHING at all.
Rooms dont have blackouts and are so small , and you can’t get coffee to your room, ridiculous being a 5 star hotel and charging what they charge.
When talked to the manager about our stay they didn’t even care.

The boat is inconvenient No parking, use nearby Car shuttle is rundown Amenities are original to the dispenser? lol Room is average View of Arashiyama Breakfast is simple for the price *2 pieces of conger eel, fried, green vegetables, onion, tofu, rice, one egg for some reason, probably for porridge? lol lol 2 small pieces of kiwi are also a mystery, shiitake mushrooms, shimeji The bed in the room is too soft and my back hurts Cleanliness is okay, it's not carpet so it's obvious that it's easy to clean Sweets at the storehouse are okay Sweets at the front desk are okay
I felt the same discomfort when I went to Taketomi Island Mysteriously expensive Bad value for money I went here for the experience It was expensive but I don't know why it's expensive I think that foreign-owned flashy hotels have trendy amenities and are sparkly I think it's a place to spend your spare money on social contributions when you become a grandmother and enjoy the rest of your life I think. Not visible.

This is a beautiful property situated on a wooded slope along a pleasant river. You take a 15 minute boat ride to reach it. Our room was wonderfully traditional with modern amenities. Service was impeccable. Our traditional breakfast was brought to our room each morning and the keiseki meal one evening was the best keiseki we had for all three weeks in Japan. It was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Highly recommended.

It was a wonderful inn! My mother was very happy to be able to stay at Hoshinoya Kyoto, which had been her wish. We traveled to the inn by boat and were greeted by the staff. The roasted green tea we had at dinner was delicious. We were able to spend a relaxing time surrounded by nature. We could see the trolleys from our room and the unique Kyoto scenery was very soothing. The food was delicious, the staff were polite and everyone had a lovely smile. We had a wonderful time from start to finish during our stay and are very satisfied. Thank you very much.

Although the hotel is situated on a beautiful site (even in mid February) coupled by the staff’s pleasant service, the fact that my room’s bath water’s maximum temperature was 36 Celsius made the stay very troubling to say the least!! In order to take a bath at night and in the morning, I resorted to adding boiled water from the in room coffee pot to get the bath to 37 Celsius which was still lukewarm and barely usable. The other let down was the fact that the only on site restaurant was fully reserved in advance even though the hotel was not fully booked. The only reason I can think of is that the hotel must have let some non staying public reserve all the restaurant seats instead of allowing staying/paying guests use the restaurant. This F& B limitation was further infuriating by the fact that the only option for dinner was to go off premise which took approximately 1 hour round trip down the mountain and across the Hozu River. In short, the overnight stay was a let down and not worth the established luxury pricing.
