One of my dearest friends always chooses Grand Hyatt to be her accommodation no matter where she goes because of her confidence in the brand's consistently high quality. Unfortunately, I had never been able to understand where this belief of hers comes from. I cannot convince myself that Grand Hyatt is brand fine to that extent after staying at its properties in Macau and Shenzhen. Therefore, I once again chose to stay at Grand Hyatt when I visited Guangzhou last time, hoping that the Grand Hyatt in the city I believe has the highest quality of hotel industry in the country would be able to offer me an answer. Unfortunately, I left Grand Hyatt Guangzhou with an even greater puzzle about why my friend loves this brand so much. Like its peers in Shenzhen and Macau, the room in Grand Hyatt Guangzhou is indeed very fine. Adopting a slightly modern and homey design distanced from the classy luxuriousness typical in many hotels on this tier, the room in Grand Hyatt Guangzhou is a cozy, relaxing (but not lazy) and comfortable place where one can naturally calm down and chill. I find the room in Grand Hyatt Guangzhou even more enjoyable than its Macau and Shenzhen brothers because of its unique view. Like most of the top hotels in Guangzhou, Grand Hyatt is located right next to Huacheng Square, a garden beautifully landscaped with extensive grassland and woods and an artificial river. Among all the hotels along the square, I find Grand Hyatt having the most enlightening view. All other hotels, like Four Seasons and Jumeira, are located on the top floors of some towering skyscrapers. Consequently, the view of Huacheng Square from these hotels is so detached from the ground. All one can see is a piece of green land. Appreciation of this beautiful garden is difficult there. On the contrary, Grand Hyatt, benefiting from its low-rise architecture, has the fortune to have a more direct contact with this Central Park of Guangzhou. It makes Grand Hyatt a place where one can easily appreciate the adorable waters and greens, as well as the vibrant cityscape where lights from vehicles, offices, restaurants, and stores twinkle like the million stars in the galaxy. While many top hotels in Guangzhou enjoy a paranormal view of the skyline and the river, Grand Hyatt is the only hotel I have encountered so far to have such a lifeful and attached-to-ground view. This is perhaps one of the crucial reasons why those low-rise hotels next to Central Park in the Uptown are way more lovely than those in the Midtown and Downtown Manhattan skyscrapers. Unfortunately, the software of Grand Hyatt Guangzhou can hardly match such adorable hardware. To some extent, it is the worst among all the Hyatt properties I have visited. I would only outline three problems, although there were, in fact, many more. The first is about room hygiene, which is supposed to be one of the most critical priorities for any hotel. Basically, what happened was that I discovered there were two pieces of used notepad papers right on top of the wash pan. The very existence of these papers could not have been more obvious. I did not find them particularly troubling at first, but I soon realized the severity of this problem. It was not these papers in themselves being the problem; the scary thing is the problem behind their very existence: given that the housekeeping could not even spot these two pieces of trash that I could immediately spot once I stepped into the room, how could I believe that they had done their job to have thoroughly cleaned the room? Given that they could not even clean these two simple papers, how can I believe they had done their jobs cleaning the bath, the shower, the desk, or even the bed? I understand that there was also a chance that the housekeeping had done everything but just accidentally omitted the two pieces of paper trash. I also recognize how busy the housekeeping team was, and I was and am very grateful for their services. However, the very existence of these two pieces of trash is still quite a blow to one’s confidence in the overall hygiene of the hotel. The second problem is a typical one among the Hyatt properties I have visited – they did not care about guests' room preferences, even if I had already notified them one day in advance. I asked my travel agency to inform the hotel about my room preferences one day before my arrival. The hotel confirmed they had taken note of that and would try to accommodate. However, the hotel not only did not make any arrangement in advance (which I will explain later how I discovered they did not), they did not even make that arrangement on the spot. How did I know they did not make the arrangement even on the spot? In the middle of the check-in process, suddenly recalling how irresponsive Hyatt hotels had been to my pre-arrival notes, I asked the lady helping me to check in whether she had seen my room preferences. Only on that spot did they browse through the system to check my preference. In other words, had I not reminded my preferences to the hotel again during check-in, the hotel would not have paid any attention to them. How can I be convinced that the hotel did spend even a little effort to accommodate my preferences, given that the check-in desk did not even know my preferences? There is only one possibility – the reservation department had already helped me reserve a room in advance that matches my preferences. However, I could quickly rule out this possibility because the check-in desk told me, “Okay, we will try to find a room that best matches your preferences among all rooms that we have now". This reveals that not even the reservation department made the arrangement; otherwise, the check-in desk would not need to make the arrangement right on the spot. Overall, I find it highly believable that Grand Hyatt initially intended to totally ignore guests' room preference, given that the reservation team did not make the arrangement nor the check-in desk have done so had I had reminded them again. I do not find a hotel that would systematically neglect guests' preferences a decent hotel. Fortunately, the lady heading the front desk could fix the problems by arranging a room I preferred at last. However, the overall experience of realizing that the hotel did not intend to acknowledge guests' preferences without the guests' continuously reminding them is bothering. For some less demanding guests, the problems I highlighted above may not seem anything significant, but I am sure everyone would find the issue I am going to outline now troubling – my room was not a place where one could sleep, even at night! To put it in one sentence: throughout the entire night, be it 12 AM or 5 AM, my room was bothered with a continuous wave of extremely disturbing noises from the floor above (the lobby floor). For some periods, it was like someone jumping there; for others, it was like someone using a vacuum cleaner above you. More frequently, the noise came from heavy objects falling on the ground. The noises persisted for the entire night and were always such loud. I was, and still am, very surprised by how weak the sound-proofing system is in Grand Hyatt Guangzhou. Even my dormitory back in college time had a better soundproof than the one in Grand Hyatt Guangzhou. This is, with no exaggeration, not a room where one can sleep! I tried to bear with it, but I was really unable to sleep even at 5 AM, so I called the operator to report that. Surprisingly, I found out that the space above me is actually not a public space but a preparation room for hotel staff. Then, shouldn't it be easy for the hotel to solve this problem by asking the staff not to bang the floor? The answer is an absolute no. The noise not only did not reduce but grew even louder. The hotel could not offer any viable solution either. At last, I spent a sleepless night at Grand Hyatt Guangzhou. As a person who would usually sleep until noon during vacation, I made a record that surprised all my friends at Grand Hyatt Guangzhou – I was already at the restaurant having breakfast at 6:30 AM because I just could not sleep. It is precisely this problem that made me lose all my remaining positive impression about this hotel – this is a problem that would not even arise in a hostel, since the very basic task of any hotel is to allow guests to sleep, which Grand Hyatt Guangzhou, unfortunately, failed to do. It is like a Concorde plane that cannot fly, a Titanic that cannot sail, and an Aston Martin that cannot run. I truly love the view from Grand Hyatt Guangzhou. Still, I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone because if a hotel is not a place people can sleep, it is not a hotel.…
Good service is expected in all Five Star hotels like Grand Hyatt GZ, but Grand Hyatt GZ excelled by having a flexible team providing exceptional service with personal touch. I first stayed a night for business and then decided to stay on another 2 nights! Well done!
If you lower your expect and treat this 'Grand Hyatt' as a Hyatt place or Hyatt regency, you will feel much more better with your stay. 1)Check in, after you finished fill in the checkin form, no one told you what the next, you have to wait and wait...A staff looks like really busy on clicking the keyboard and didn't told you what you should to do next. 2)Checked in around 3 PM and I got my room around 8 PM, I ever called the service center and try to figure out how many time I have to wait around 5 PM. But no one call back to give me any further information. 3)Around 10 PM, I backed to my room and found the TV didn't work properly. Is this a Grand Hyatt ?
Staffs in lounge are so sweet. You'll be well welcomed and cared. They will do their bests to make you satisfied, such as comparing the view, the level, the size of your room choices. They find a room for you to have a rest when your target room was not ready yet.
Booked Grand Hyatt using membership points for my short excursion in Guangzhou. Location is great for wandering around Zhujiang New Town, despite the fact the hotel is one of the shortest in height among buildings around. Can't really see the Tower from my room, but the city view was not bad. Breakfast was fantastic. I enjoyed the room so much. I had a great sleep and extended my checkout time for a long nap, without extra cost.
