Located on the western coast of this lush volcanic island, LUX Saint Gilles (formerly LUX Ile de La Reunion) faces a shimmering expanse of aqua-blue waters, fringed by a stretch of immaculate sands. Tucked away in acres of beautiful tropical gardens, Creole villas sit in the shade of coconut palms and filao trees, just steps from the coral-sheltered lagoon at L'Hermitage.

I have stayed 5 nights at the hotel and I truly recommend it. The hotel is beautiful and the colonial house that is the main building is stunning. Check-in was very fast and efficient. We were shown to our rooms and explained everything. The rooms are scattered around the hotel property. The food was very good. The buffet offering was extensive with several options for breakfast and dinner. The beach restaurant Plage was very nice in the evening, but the best experience was at L’Orangine restaurant. The food is truly delicious and the service. The pool and beach areas are very nice. The lagoon has crystal clear waters perfect for relaxation. My only recommendation is to think of renovating/refreshing the rooms, especially the bathrooms that feel small due to the bathtub. Maybe replace it for a shower would give it a more modern feel. Also replacing the room’s front doors to better insulate the rooms. Parking is very easy for anyone who rents a car. Congratulations to all the staff! I loved my stay in Réunion and I will definitely be back soon.

I had booked a week in advance for a family member's birthday. We met at the hotel and everyone was able to enter the parking lot and having arrived after the rest of the group, I was refused access to the parking lot on the pretext that it was full, telling me to go find a place in the street, but it's almost mission impossible on a Sunday at 12:30 p.m., especially on a day with good weather. So one of my family members joined me at the gate and the person in charge of the gate kindly opened this one, and there were free spaces in the parking lot. As for the hotel, the park is pretty and well maintained and of course eating facing the sea is very pleasant. The lunch meal (carris buffet or a la carte) was adequate, but nothing more and the desserts were not extraordinary and quite expensive, the chocolate cake did not have much taste and was neither melting nor soft and the Lemon macaroons were rather hard. The restaurant staff is very pleasant and attentive.

Excellent welcome, heavenly in a green setting and right next to the beach and shops..
The entire staff makes us feel almost at home:
The excellent restaurant with good tastings and gargantuan breakfasts. The people at the reception were very warm to us and we were able to enjoy a few more hours at the hotel at the swimming pool after returning our room. Concerning the rooms, they are very comfortable and clean even if they need a facelift, the quality of the bedding is there. The housekeeping staff was very respectful, we were able to enjoy a few lie-ins without being disturbed, a few small discussions with some of them, for good advice on what to discover on the island, we were pampered. . Fascinating discussions also with gardeners to inform us about local plants and trees. The security staff also gave good advice to go and see the markets so that we could buy souvenirs for our return!! It’s a pleasure to have been able to exchange and meet with the teams! Thank you all, we can’t wait to come back! See you next year !!!

The hotel is in a beautiful location with a beach overlooking a beautiful lagoon, however the structure would require a thorough and radical renovation. We chose a Superior room with access to the garden, as soon as we entered we noticed an unpleasant smell of humidity which never abated, the bathroom with the shower in the tub is very dated, as is the furniture in the room, with many external details peeling off and poorly maintained. When taking a shower, despite being careful, the bathroom often flooded as the glass resting on the tub allowed plenty of water to pass towards the floor. Moving on to the catering, we enjoyed the dinners at the La Plage restaurant, although I must point out that, having half board, certain supplements of 3 or 6 euros for certain dishes seem quite ridiculous to me, in a hotel that wants to be luxury, I understand a supplement for lobster, but certainly not for fish. The wine list includes only French labels, except for 2 South African reds, this too, apart from the nationalism, seems to me unsuitable for the level that the structure would like to be given. Plastic sunbeds on the beach, many dirty and very uncomfortable, should be renewed, there is also no shower to clean your feet at the exit of the beach to avoid bringing sand into your room, the pool showers are not suitable for this purpose. The restaurant offers a good breakfast, the evening buffet favors quantity over quality, with proposals that are certainly not haute cuisine, it is better to dine at the Plage, which apart from the requests for supplements for some dishes or the fact that by choosing from the menu you could requesting only 2 courses (starter and main course, not dessert) offered better quality. All in all we would have expected something more, even the staff should respond in English when a guest, who does not speak French, expresses himself in this language, instead of French. I would only stay here again following a major renovation.

When you check in they want to see the voucher from your travel agent!! When you arrive you see a white colonial building, but looks are deceiving. The hotel is well marketed with staff wearing white uniforms or colourful uniforms in reception. However, when you go to your Superior Room with sea view it was like a dated travel lodge. The food we had was mediocre at best, there were lots of children, no adult only area, cheap furniture and seating. The pool area looked awful, like being in a cheap Spanish hotel. We were so disappointed that we left after 1 night and paid extra to get to our next hotel in Mauritius. I would not recommend this hotel and would never go back to Reunion.

Response from Stephane Sogliuzzo - Directeur d'Exploitation, Autre at Lux* Saint Gilles
Responded 1 week ago
Dear Sir, We thank you for sharing with us your recent experience at LUX* St Gilles and we are sorry to read that it did not match your expectations specifically regarding an 'adult only' dedicated area as the property is not marketed as such. We are also sorry you did not appreciate being asked for the hotel voucher but it is a common procedure while traveling via a booking network (tour operator, travel agent...) in order to confirm upon arrival the characteristics of your stay (type of room, lengh of stay ...). . Regarding the overall state of the hotel, we are working on a large renovation programme to improve our accomodation offer and facilities. Yours sincerely.

When we arrived in the room on the bed there was a used handkerchief, we had to wait for a maid to come to change the sheets. The TV channels weren't working. We had to wait more than 45 minutes for a technician to come. In the evening at the beach restaurant: mr asks for a breast of duck to point the dish arrives all bloody, the dish returned in the kitchen 15 min wait it ate after us seen the wait. My fish arrived uncooked I could only eat the fries. My cocktail was bof. Regarding the pool the tiles come off the kids play with😒 the employees see it and nobody moves. Cons about the room and the dishes discussed with the management: we are offered as compensation to stay there day the day we leave but not possible for us to stay in the west. No spa Restaurant very expensive for what it is Big preference for other 5 stars of the island

We stayed 3 nights in a deluxe room with breakfast included. If the location of the hotel is really good (on the beach with direct access to the lagoon), we were particularly surprised by the state of the rooms which have not been renovated for a long time, judging by the wear and tear. furniture, mold in the bathrooms, malfunctioning appliances (boxes, sockets). To all those who might believe that we came across a bad room, know that we changed deluxe rooms twice (4 and 20) to end up asking for a suite (148) which was in the same condition as the rooms. deluxes. I'm not talking about the gym which is another illustration of the lack of investment in this hotel. In short, in the current state of the rooms it is impossible to recommend this hotel, which is a shame given the potential linked to its location.
The positive points of the hotel Very good breakfast, choice and freshness of food. Location of the hotel with direct access to the beach, Good quality restaurants (Le Bar, La Plage) with fresh and very well prepared fish, Good quality massage, Service and staff overall very helpful and smiling.
The negative points The rooms are not worthy of a 5 star (wear and tear on the furniture, marks on the walls, mold in the bathrooms, safes that do not work), The cleanliness of the floors of the rooms which is to be questioned (tried with white socks), The environment of the pavilions which house rooms 1 to 30 with its parking (and unauthorized camping), we are very far from the 5-star spirit. The suite with a dining table for 4 people (!!) instead of the bench, The gym with equipment that needs to be changed urgently (rusted, repaired with adhesive),

The Lux Hotel Saint-Gilles is an establishment that seems to have taken the term "lux" a little too much to heart, judging by the value for money that leaves something to be desired. If you are looking for a five-star stay, prepare to be surprised... but not in a good way!
Let's start with the rooms: they seem to date from a bygone era. Between the mushrooms and mold on the ceiling, the broken equipment, the lack of cleanliness and the indefinable smell that floats, one wonders if the hotel did not call on an expert in forgotten antiques. In the rooms, the equipment seems to date from another era: air conditioning with the smell of urine and locomotive noise, a prewar television with cables swishing like Christmas garlands, and switches as useful as a fridge at the North Pole. The terrace is dirty and the small "garden furniture" is damaged. Fortunately, the bedding is correct, and the bed is large, a small miracle in this organized chaos.
We had large pieces of glass scattered on the lawns in front of our rooms, this is not only incongruous, but also dangerous. Although reported and shown at reception, no action was taken to remove them, leaving us at risk of injury.
The public car park near our rooms (11 & 15) is a real music festival (especially on weekends), with a techno playlist that will delight partygoers. Add to that a distinct cannabis smoke, and you will have a stay that awakens all senses, for better or worse.
Regarding the 3 restaurants , although they exist, their random hours and limited choice make them difficult to access and impractical (privatizations, days of closures,...). Special mention for waiter uniforms, which, all in white, are more reminiscent of a health or cure staff than that of a luxury hotel.
The beach, although it has the potential to be a haven of peace with its magnificent sunset, looks more like a public beach on the Costa del Sol, with deckchairs that seem to have survived several monsoon seasons. And don't be surprised if you share the sand with a host of sometimes disrespectful external clients (one-day clients, conferences,...).
Not everything is black, though. Parking is guarded , the staff is friendly and smiling although inexperienced, the breakfast buffet is full, and the entrance to the hotel as well as the reception are very beautiful, which unfortunately offers a striking contrast with the rest of the establishment.
In short, the Lux Hôtel Saint-Gilles is a place where “luxury” seems to have once been present, but lost its way. It is high time to take the time to renovate everything!
An unforgettable experience... but perhaps not for the right reasons.

The good: Location is fantastic down the coast from St. Gilles. The staff were welcoming, the room was comfortable with good showers and bed. The food was very high quality with a lovely breakfast. La Plage was a highlight for simple island food cooked well. The staff were attentive and helped with the language barriers.
The bad: The worst thing for us was how the hotel attempted to deal with a gluten allergy (coeliac) . We had three separate issues in both restaurants where it was clear that staff either weren't trained in how to minimise contamination or didn't care. One meal we had to send back as, despite understanding the requirements and telling the chefs, the meal arrived with gluten containing tuile. It was only on an additional query that the waiter realised they'd provided the wrong thing. The replacement took less than 5 minutes to arrive leading us to query whether the restaurant had just removed the tuile and rearranged the food. We did get an allergic reaction but it's impossible to say whether this was the cause.
When we highlighted the issues the hotel did make an effort to monitor the situation more closely via the buffet, but we were told that a separate meal could be cooked only to find the chefs just highlighting what contained gluten and what didn't at the buffet. There was a definite misunderstanding about what contains gluten and what doesn't among the chef staff.
For a five star hotel this is unacceptable to me, considering that they were aware of the allergy before we arrived and made a point of highlighting it to us at check-in. Additional training on how to deal with this is essential if the hotel wants to cater for everyone and provide a comfortable, secure experience for all.

Some staff were really helpful, others less so. Their colourful sari type uniforms were beautiful. I was very disappointed that there was no recognition of my birthday the day after our arrival - despite me and my husband telling the reception staff on checking in. Compare that to Mauritius some days later, where the cleaners saw the birthday cards and prepared birthday messages. When we mentioned to the manager that La Reunion did not do anything on my birthday, the staff organised a special table for dinner with a birthday cake! The room was nice and quiet. We were happy to be given a room at the very end of the garden, far away from reception and the restaurants. The soundproofing was good Breakfast was a combination of a la carte and buffet. The food was all very high quality and the coffee excellent. The service at breakfast was really good and accompanied by smiles. Disappointing was the dinner choice. Restaurants were all expensive for quite small portions. It seemed there was a choice of places but apart from the (expensive) buffet, there were always one or two closed on certain days, which meant the choice was very limited. The best meal we had was lunch at the restaurant La Plage. Waiters were helpful, regularly asking guests around the pool and on the beach if drinks were required. The beach was well set out, with plenty of sofas, chairs, sun loungers, tables and parasols. Beach shoes recommended, as there is lots of dead coral on the sand. Great snorkelling from the beach, big variety of coral fish though watch out for strong currents and the Picasso triggerfish (aggressive and can bite)!

Hi, we also arrived a bit early but the check in process took so long (there was a long queue) that by the time it was completed the room was ready. I think it depends on the cleaning; if the room is ready I am sure they will let you check in early.
In my opinion they can. At breakfast they more than 10 different kind of breads etc best would be to send a mail in advance in order to be sure especially for dinner as they have 3 restaurants and in the menu it is indicated what the menu is made of.
There are more places to choose from in the Saint-Gilles-Les-Bains area.
