Nestled close to the airport, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru earns high marks for its service, with staff frequently commended for their friendliness and meticulous care. The hotel's prime location offers guests breathtaking sunset vistas, and the cleanliness of the rooms and facilities consistently receives accolades. Visitors revel in the serene atmosphere, accentuated by beautiful decor and live music. 🔵OVERALL STAY 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (Full 5-star)

This stay was very memorable and very worthwhile, I recommend this resort for families who want to take full advantage of the facilities around the resort. This resort is indeed a top class resort in Kota Kinabalu Sabah in particular and Malaysia in general, still remains relevant and very well maintained even though it is several decades old and has a very high benchmark to be challenged by other competitors.

Q: Will I come here to stay again?
A: Of course!
Facility not visited/used so no comment can be given:
1. Gym
2. Spas
3. Buggy service (available for guests)
4. Sauna

The staff who deserve praise must be Ms Christine who is the Duty Manager and the Horizon Lounge Team who are very friendly and diligent in serving all my requests. They include Farah, Rais, Joanne, Norman etc.
The Cool Zone staff who organize the kids are Hana and there is another person whose name I have unfortunately forgotten.
Mr. Majid, TATU Restaurant Manager and team who are always friendly and used to dealing with him before.

Staff deserve criticism -ve:
None.

The hotel was a little out from Kato Centre. But it had great facilities and amazing and very helpful happy staff.
The restaurant staff at breakfast were always very cheerful and always under extreme pressure.
The life guards do a very long and amazing job. On two occasions we saw life guards have to dive in and rescue three different people from drowning as they got out of there depth. You really do an amazing job.
Hillary the pool bar man walks around the pool delivering drinks and food, always happy always singing. Keep up the good work.
Andrew the towel man, always chatty and a really nice man.
Merlin the room lady also does long hours but always cheerful and rooms are kept spotless and are very helpful.
You can get the boat transfers to the islands from the hotel jetty, you may pay a little more but we found this a much better service as Star marina had staff on the islands that gave you a mat to sit on, doesn’t sound much but much nicer on sandy beaches and they kept an eye on your belongings while you swam.
It was 25 rm for a taxi to Kato, or we walked it a few times there is a cycle path you can walk, took about an hour but we enjoyed the exercise.
Wi-fi could be a little temperamental at the room but did work but was good at the main part of hotel.
Sunsets were amazing.
We will definitely be back.

The hospitality here is so good that I feel I want to extend my stay. I used to stay in hotel for work and vacation but I feel this is so far the best hospitality I ever received. Every details in the room has been carefully thought of. I feel like I'm home but better. First, the staff were very attentive to the guests. My lil daughter dropped her spoon on the floor and the waiter who was so busy preparing next table quickly grabbed the spoon and replaced it. After breakfast, we found our room was cleaned. Amazing when the hotel was actually full house, we didn't expect such quick service. Second, we brought a lil nephew with us and before any request for extra bed, the hotel had prepped extra bed for the lil boy. It is very impressive to us because we had been to few 5 star resort hotels after mco, due to lack of staff and new opening, the premises always in chaos and not up to their previous standard. But this hotel, I could seen their staff is really doing their best. I feel so touched with the hospitality and service. Thirdly, everything in the room is carefully detailed. From drinking water, to toiletries, towels, cutleries and hand sanitizer and wipes. I had been in some hotels that refused to give me hand towels because my room wasn't entitled for such towels and yet the hotels were only 4 stars and I paid premium due to last min booking. Another incident this afternoon was that I wanted to have beef burger for myself and the kitchen was out of bun. Feeling frustrated, I just ordered food for my family members and not myself and tried to find other alternative. The room service delivered the food quickly knowing I had other engagement after the lunch and to my surprise, the restaurant manager delivered the food to my room and apologise over the short coming. They actually went up and low to get the bun to prep the beef burger for me and delivered it as a complimentary. How could I not be touched with such gesture? I'm telling my husband, after this, we are going to only shangri la chain of hotels for holidays. Lastly, walking back to my hotel room, I felt like walking through a museum galley with exhibition of arts on the wall and traditional music. So informative and relaxing. I wouldn't say much more about the scenery, it is just beautiful, come and experience it yourself. Thanks shangri la tanjung aru.

Despite having booked at 10am the same day we were going to check in, this was probably the best decision we have ever made. Lol. Now that the hotel offered early check in at 10am and late check out at 6pm, all the more worth it to book.

We booked a junior suite at the ocean wing and it was totally money well spent. The ocean wing is basically a separate building from the garden wing with its own swimming pool and yard. We arrived with basically very warm greetings and true hospitality started from the lobby. The cold welcome drinks were such a nice gesture. The suite was huge with an adult size jacuzzi outside at the balcony facing the sea view and the pool view. Even though it was an open concept, we were glad to find that they also provide rolled down partitions for privacy. We enjoyed a nice warm soak that night after a long travel.

We were not so lucky with the sunset since it has been raining every evening in KK during our stay but i was sure it will be a beautiful one from high rise balcony. Well, we’ll simply have to come again next time i guess :P. The beds are as comfortable as you can get with all the mini pantry basically free for your use. We ordered in room dining and it was delicious and aplenty and was cooked spicy as per our request. The price is also reasonable with quite a lot of choices.

We were there during weekdays, so there were not so many people around. We had an early morning walk along the beach while walking to the next building (garden wing) for the breakfast. Apparently, you can also request to be drove over if you are too lazy to walk the 5-10mins leisure walk to the garden wing if you want. The breakfast was unlimited a la carte, so you can order how much you want and it will be brought to you. It was delicious and i really like their iced dalgona coffee! Good job in getting on the bandwagon i’d say =P

After breakfast, we went to ask around for activities, esp horseback riding and atv ride. To our surprise, it was quite cheap and we enjoyed both so much! It was only rm40 for the horseback riding and rm80 for the atv, i was expecting for them to be a bit pricier tbh. Before the horseback riding, we also went for a bicycle ride. The staffs handling us during the horseback riding and the atv ride were all so nice and helpful and we had so much fun with Lara and Cinta (the 2 horses we acquainted). And because it was always raining in the evening, the trail for the atv ride was watery and quite muddy but it adds more fun to the activity as far as we are concerned. Lol.

I basically had the swimming pool all to myself that afternoon and the lifeguard there was so attentive and helpful. He even provided me with goggles after seeing that i have none.

All in all, we had such a good stay in Shangrila Tg Aru. The hospitality and the service are top notched and i hope that can be maintained even after the RMO is lifted and more tourists (esp from mainland and korea) come. Thank you again for the good memories.

Perfect stay, once you go Shangri-La, you'll definitely be back.

The rooms are spacious with a range of toiletries so you can pack light. Beach views from the balcony is awesome.

Breakfast has plentiful of variety with seats overlooking the ocean. There is also pool and beachside activities available daily.

You can find quality chinese food at Shang Palace and have drinks at Sunset Bar which is the best location to watch the sunset.

If you enjoy relaxing on the beach, this one is not for you as the beach is very small.
A family oriented hotel so was not the best experience for us as a couple.
Paid upgrade to seaview room came with access to the club lounge with had tasty canapes and afternoon tea.
Food was expensive and no local cuisine restaurant.
Couple spa treatment was perfectly pleasant but nothing special that could be experienced anywhere.

I'm profoundly impressed by their A-Class service post covid compared to many other resorts. The rooms are modern with real working amenities and hospitality is amazing given their ability to manage the holiday crowd albeit delays at times.
The breakfast spread is vast but try to go early as the restaurant gets packed.
A wide array of in-house activities, a gorgeous pool and beach especially the Sunset Bar 😍 (a must try) during sunset.
All activities could be back via their Star Marina Beach Club. Island hopping is only RM35 which you could then top up for other activities such as parasailing and etc.
My only complain would be that if you need more soap or shampoo there is a RM20 charge! A 5* hotel shouldn't be charging this fee especially when you're Resort driven with sea activities.

Stayed for 6 nights at the end of January. Although we had not booked a transfer we were met at the airport by a Shangri- la representative and were assisted in getting a taxi, a great start. On arrival we were met and escorted to our suite on the 7th floor of the Kinabalu wing. The check in formalities were completed swiftly. The room was outstanding in its presentation, facilities and the most beautiful views. We had access to the Horizon Club where we met a Kevin the manager who was charming and his team. It was great to see Johnny again after a gap of nearly 10 years. Everyone in the lounge went the extra mile to provide faultless service whether it was breakfast or evening cocktails the service and quality of food and drink was very high, despite some very busy periods. We had a room service meal once which was delivered on time and was again high quality. The Borneo Lounge offered a relaxing place to unwind with a light snack and drinks accompanied by a great band playing easy going music and the sunset bar offered a great vantage point for sea views and that magical sunset. The pools are huge and the water temperature was always comfortable, there is a segregated adults only area which is strictly enforced. But the is plenty of space for the kids with water slides and ample entertainment provided. This is a great family hotel and can be busy but the team takes it in its stride and copes effortlessly. We would highly recommend it.

We stay 4 days during a family trip. We take th3 Staycation package which includes breakfast n free transfer to the islands from the hotel daily. The room is spacious, with full toiletries, bathrobe, coffee/tea packs, plates, spoons, and this hotel is certainly kids friendly as my daughter 's room is providfed with bottles sterilizer n baby cot. The breakfast is good with lots of varieties and a coffee machine where u can make yr cupucino or latte. The hotel is about 10 minutes from the airport n you can easily call Grab anytime. On our arrival, I noticed a huge gong at the entrance, a staff hit the gong to signsl arrival of guests. Then the staff arrived with the luggage trolley, indeed good service. The same goes to the reception where the staffs are ever friendly and ready to serve you. Though this hotel rates is not cheap but the comfort stay and the staffs good service made you feel like staying longer.

We stayed at this hotel 26/07 to 10/08 and the it was a great stay. Although some of the buildings are in need of some updating the room was very clean and comfortable. We were in the Tanjung wing exec sea view room, and we had a single bed for our son in the dining/living room, so there was plenty of space. This room type also gave us access to the horizon lounge, where you can have a quieter breakfast, some snacks at lunch and food and drink in the evening. The horizon lounge staff are amazing and extremely attentive, and I have a few people to mention as they made the stay even more special for us and they are, Christina, Zarina, Farah, Joanne, Rais, nathalie, Jordan and Chef Fredy. A special mention goes to chef fredy as my son discovered that he enjoyed Rendang for breakfast while in Malaysia and although it wasn’t on the menu in the lounge they had it for him everyday and then on the final evening he was invited into the kitchen to cook it with Fredy, which was a great experience for him and totally unexpected.
There is one pool that is split into 3 areas, so if you are without kids or have older kids you can use the adult end which is a bit more peaceful! There is plenty to do for the younger ones around the pool though which is good.
The nearest town is Kota Kinabalu which is about 10-15 mins away by taxi and I would recommend downloading grab taxi before you go, this is the same as Uber and works out around 35% of the normal taxi fare so is quite a saving.
We visited Sandakan/Sepilok on this trip and I organised the flights myself to fly out and back in 1 day and James Tiking on the concierge desk arranged a local taxi in sandakan to meet us at the airport and take us to the various sanctuaries to see the orangutan etc and I would say this is well worth the money, the flights were about £65 each return and the taxi for the day was RM350 (£70 roughly).
All in all a great trip and experience and would recommend.

It was really humid when we’re there so we didn’t. I’m sure you can though. Hotel will help you with a map if you do!

The view of sunset and twilight in the evening is one of the best sunset views in the world. One can strolls along the First beach from the Resort toward a local night market, about a kilometer. The night market offers various local stalls selling amenities, foods, fruits and local artists in performing.
