You can enjoy a nice hot spring and good food after your visit at Kyoto. Out of the 109 rooms, 51 comes with private open-air hot spring bath in your room. Other than that, we have a public bath and an open-air bath for all of our guests.

We booked a ryokan with a private onsen.
I thought that if we're going to Japan then we must try an Onsen, so when I found this onsen which is halal friendly in their menu and offers a private onsen at an affordable price I booked it nearly straight away.

The staff at the hotel do not speak much English so brush up on some Japanese phrases but they try really hard to communicate which is good.

It's around 20 minutes train ride from Kyoto station and then you can call the hotel to pick you up using the phone by the station. When we called them, they arrived within 5 minutes; there is a 7-11 across the road from the station, if you have things to buy I suggest you buy it before you call the hotel as there is literally nothing around the hotel. They do have a small shop where I bought some milk but a 7-11 is probably cheaper.

We provided with dinner and breakfast in traditional Japanese style, all was halal, but we couldn't finish the food as there was just so much. I'm not used to Japanese breakfasts so couldn't eat much but at least we got to experience it.

The onsen itself was nice, smaller than I expected but could semi fit in two of us. The view is wonderful and it was nice and reflective to be in the onsen at night. The water is boiling hot though so make sure you fill it with enough cold water too.

Ogoto HOT SPRING is the largest hot spring resort just 20min by green color pretty train from Kyoto Station. It is very popular as a hot spring with skin-enriching properties thanks to its high alkaline levels, which give your skin a smooth feel after bathing. Almost all hotels have their own transportaion buses b/w the Ogoto station and their accomodation. When you call the hotel after reaching the Ogoto station, they can pick you up at the station. It is free.
I booked Yuzanso for 1 night staying to enjoy the hot spring. All staffs are very good hospitality. The breakfast is healthy. Very reasonable price, not expencive, but if you would like to enjoy Japanese hot spring to boost up your health, this hotel should be better than another hotels there.
They have the restaurant (good)and bar(okay for beer not cocktail ) When you have some problems in the hotel, all staffs will help you to resolve them as soon as possible. The bed is a little bit small, but I like this hotel in Ogoto Hot Spring area. Ogoto Herb Garden is next door from Yuzanso. I enjoyed herb tea. It should be perfect healing staying. Recommend.

Feels so relax here. This Ryokan is muslim friendly as they have halal food available.
The ryokan is outside Kyoto, You can take JR kosei liken from Kyoto station and stop at Ogoto onsen station. Once you reached there, you can give the ryokan a phone call and they will pick you up with the van.
Check in was fast and the staff are well spoken in english. They sent us to the room and explained to us everything we need. We booked the plan under Sanyaso room muslim friendly. Room is decent, big enough for 2 people and they have outdoor bath area which make it so nice to take a hot bath while enjoying the snow showers. magnificent view.
They have indoor and outdoor hot spring as well. We tried both indoor and outdoor and both was great. Do note the local rules when you are using the hot spring.
Dinner was scrumptious, and very big portion with beef in menu. You can tell them in advance if you have some preference of menu and they will try their best to change it for you.
The ryokan is big and they have a shop downstairs at the lobby and many games n karaoke are available as well.
Definitely great experience here.

This place is breathtaking. It’s so beautiful and peaceful at night and in the morning. The hospitality of this place is to the max! The staff were all friendly, polite and make you feel welcome.

The best thing is that the food is halal certified. There’s a certificate framed at the reception counter. It’s the authentic Japanese dining experience.

The private onsen in our room was amazing. We get to soak and relax in the comfort of our own room. The room was huge! With 2 toilets and a separate shower and onsen area. A dining area and the living room/bedroom area. (they set up your sleeping beds when you’re out for dinner). Really comfortable tatami mats.

Awesome food spread. For dinner and breakfast! I mean I didn’t even know which I wanted to finish 1st, they were all sooooo good! I mean what can I say.. the beef melts in your mouth, the hot and cold soba was just delicious, eggs(breakfast) were good. Great 👍🏽 job on the chawanmushi! My favourite! It melted in my mouth! Smooth and flavourful. The slices of beef was awesome and alot and huge! My complements to the chef/chefs that prepared the meal!

Thank you for having us. Letting us experience the quite and tranquility of such a beautiful place. It’s a little pricey but worth the night (If you see the amount of food they give you and the size and view of the room, it’s definitely worth every penny). Really enjoyed the view and the cold night air while soaking in a hot private bath that melts my aches and pains away.

I accidentally left my clothes there during check out and they kept it for me to collect back the next day and were quick to respond to my emails as well.

Thank you to the lady (I’m sorry I didn’t get your name) that help us checked in and bring us to our room and show us how to use the private bath. And helping me when I came back for my clothes the next day as well (She remembered me when I came back to the counter to pick up my things).

Will definitely come back again in the future, InsyaAllah

I booked the "Executive Room San-yaso with private open-air hot spring" with halal menu. Spacious room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking Lake Biwa. The dinner course had so many items and was so tasty! You really get an array of items from steamed crab to beef syabu-syabu. I definitely plan on coming here again next winter.

We stayed in the traditional Japanese room with private Onsen bath. Even with the private one, I still recommend visiting the public Onsen as the Jacuzzi bubbles are stronger and the water feels hotter. The breakfast and dinners are like a feast! It's a lot of food! Food service tends to be slow and on one occasion they forgot some dishes. This isn't the best Onsen resort. There are others elsewhere that allow you to select western or Japanese meals, and gender specific yukatas ~ which are unavailable at yuzanso.

As you can see from my profile, this was my second time visiting. I decided to try the Hoshinozuku room this time, so I thought I should add what the differences are to the Sanyaso room.

Er...basically it has 2 toilets and is slightly bigger, but other than that everything else is the same.

It seems to be more "away" from the where the sun rises (i.e. in the bigger part of the building where you can see more of the lake), so unlike my previous stay in Sanyaso - I couldn't see the sun rise, which I was slightly sad about. I think you could PROBABLY see the sun set though. I only managed to have my bath when it got dark so I have no idea. Just guessing from the positions of the sun. For this reason, I'd rather go back to Sanyaso. The living space was not that much bigger anyway (if it was it wasn't noticeable).

The staff kindly accommodated my mom who wanted to change rooms (there was only one other room they could switch us to, as it was spring) although they'd already prepared the first room for us.

They also kindly customised the halal menu - I actually just removed the whole hotpot plus some other random stuff I knew we wouldn't eat (I'm pescetarian). No change in price, but I hate wasting food and I appreciate them being flexible.

By the way, I went in April, so if you're wondering if you can see sakura while you're in the private bath - Yes. We were there when the blossoms were starting to fall, so a few times when the wind blew the blossoms around - totally romantic. April weather is a lot better for outdoor bathing too - it was chilly in November the first time round tho we just gritted our teeth through.

the water took a lot longer to cool though (I don't really like SUPER hot baths, having skin problems) so sadly I had to add the shower water to kind of cool it down faster, else I'd be out there for hours (this was despite me filling the bath at like, 3am. 2 hours later and still too hot!)

I've never really been one to really appreciate ofuro, but this time I don't know why, it was just so relaxing that I didn't feel like getting out.

I love Yuzanso and it's forever one of my top holiday destinations in Japan.

Once you reach Ogoto onsen station, there's a public payphone near the drop off point for buses and taxi. Give them a call and they will pick up you up within 5 mins.
Check in was very quick for us. The staff actually showed us personally where our room is, our yukata size and the rules for the public hot spring. She gave us some instructions for our personal hot spring and a few other things in the room. Her English is good enough that we were able to understand.
Room was huge. There's 2 toilets with a sink. A living room with a big table. A dining area with another table. And the bathroom with another 2 more sinks. And when u are sipping your tea, sitting at the dining area, you can see Lake Biwa at the distance. Very beautiful.
Dinner was just too much. We loved it. But still too much. There was shabu shabu, crab, rice, salmon and lots more. Breakfast was more simple and nicer proportion.
Overall, a good experience. I enjoyed it.

P/S. They serve halal menu. Just let them know when you book the room.

My partner and I stayed at the Ryokan for only 1 night. The experience we had was really awesome.

We took a train from Kyoto main station to arrive at the Otogo-onsen Station where there's a free pick up by the Ryokan's Van.
We reached pretty early at about 12pm (check-in was strictly at 3pm) and get the chance to walk downhill to visit the lovely Lake Biwa and had lunch.

The staff was really polite and they do have staff that understand english. We stayed in a room with an outdoor hot spring. Room was really spacious with an area for "eating" and an area which will be converted into a bed room (tatami bed). There's even 2 toilets just in case you and your partner need to use it at the same time.
The view from our room and especially when we are using our own private outdoor hot spring was awesome with the lake biwa right in front of us.

Our stay came with Dinner and Breakfast and we are treated to a really nice traditional Japanese style meal. It was a real experience as you get to try a wide range of dish from hotpot to sashimi to dessert and local delicacy. I can't eat beef and indicate when I was booking the room. They changed the beef dish to a fish instead. I thought it was pretty awesome that they accommodate to my request.

The Ryokan came with a common Hot Spring for guests to use. It was really nice to experience it as a foreigner. You do not have to worry about how to use as the staff will prepare a "to-do-list" in english on how to use the Hot Spring. They have a nice outdoor spring and a whirlpool to use as well, just remember to wake up early at 6am to use it to catch the sunrise as you are soaking in it.

In summary, It was a really good experience for us to visit Ryokan Yuzanso. I did rate 5 stars for the customer service, ambience, room, facilities and the convenience to reach this destination. A picture says a thousand words, check out the shots that was uploaded.

(:

Room very small and hygiene poor. Bed covers had marks on them!

They said halal food when they advertised but when we got there they said you have to order in advance !

As soon as I checked in I wanted to check out! The photos made it look spacious with a onsen apparently for a family of four! It was just about acceptable for one of us at a time to use it!

Not the typical Japanese experience I was hoping for 😞!
