Thorntree River Lodge is set in Zambia’s Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, just a short distance from the famous Victoria Falls, Thorntree River Lodge is built with an environmentally-conscious design. Drawing inspiration from local customs and culture, it is a modern contemporary design with tented roof structures to maintain the feel of authentic Africa. The lodge boasts 8 twin rooms and 2 family units comprising of 4 beds each. Each unit will have its own indoor and outdoor bathrooms, as well as a luxurious private plunge pool. The main lodge consists of a lounge with an open dining area, where the fine dining experience of African cuisine will come to life. The dining room flows into a private, temperature controlled wine cellar stocked with the finest wines. A gym and spa overlook the mighty Zambezi River, and there is a small library with WIFI for our guests’ convenience. The communal deck is set on the edge of the stunning riverside, and is home to a sunken boma area and an infinity pool. Wooden decking floats on the edge of the river, and moves with the water level to create the illusion of sailing a boat, and help to achieve a seamless feel between river and land. Activities include visits to Victoria Falls UNESCO World Heritage site, cultural village visits, sunset river cruises (on our own private boat), fishing, and visits to the Livingstone Museum. Thorntree River Lodge is the perfect linkage for your safari experiences in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana.

My wife and I were finally travelling for our dream honeymoon to Africa for safari all across Southern Africa (Zimbabwe -2 locations, Zambia, and Botswana) and we can't say enough about African Bush Camps (ABC) and the entire staff there. Here we are just reviewing Throntree Rvier Lodge, but all of the ABC camps were incredible in their own way (which is what really made the trip for us). At Thorntree (our third stop on the safari) it started with our tour of Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls was an incredible sight to see and I even got to bungee jump off of the bridge there (a bucket list item for sure, just ask Will Smith). Here is where you would visit to relax and enjoy the accommodations. As there is not as much wildlife as the other locations, but you are guaranteed to see Rhino here as they are 24/7 guarded and protected. These were by far the nicest rooms of all of the ABC lodging we stayed at, with private swim out pools and wide-open layout positioned right on the Zambezi River. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Phillpe and his extensive birding knowledge. As well as being one of the only camps we went to that offered an eye-opening village visit experience, where my wife even got to do some blacksmithing.

This is one of the finest lodges I've ever experienced. My fifth trip to Africa and Thorntree is now my favorite accommodation. We spent 2 nights here with our kids (age 12 and 13). We stayed in the connecting double suite with separate bedrooms and 2 full baths. Perfection. The food was delicious and quite healthy, with tons of fresh colorful veggies and fruit. Great cocktails and wine and special kids drinks. Two of us have celiac disease and they expertly accommodated our gluten free diets. Claudia (our guide) and Nicholas (our driver) were excellent. They brought us to walk with the protected white rhinos. We saw the 2-week old baby rhino (we were the second group to EVER see the baby). An indescribably emotional and exhilarating experience, possibly the most special moment in all my safaris. The presidents of Zambia and Rwanda were actually in town to see (and name) that particular rhino the next day! I didn't exactly know what to expect with Victoria Falls. I imagined a very touristy scenario of busloads of people clambering to get selfies. It wasn't like that at all. Claudia took us on an intimate walking tour. Perhaps it is still covid-related, but for most of the morning we were all alone on the path. It was so awesome. We put on ponchos and flip slops and explored all over the falls, seeing it from many angles and traversing single file foot bridges over the gorge. Obviously a must-do. Also - I HIGHLY recommend the Livingstone Island tour. Worth every penny. Thorntree will set it up for you, but it's run by a different operator that is specifically trained in water safety. Our kids wanted to add Zimbabwe to their country list, but we were short on time. Claudia arranged a walk across the bridge (and across the border) to Zimbabwe. Was super fun! Buy the 2-country visa when you enter Zambia to make this easier. We were supposed to have another night, but had some international flight changes. I sure could've used another day here to just enjoy the pool, the views, the spa, the gym, the library, and the gourmet food. Franklyn, our host, and the entire staff were incredibly professional and made our family feel at home. This place is beyond special. The perfect luxury stay to begin or end your safari vacation.

My wife and I came to southern Africa on our belated honeymoon in mid-March 2022. Thorntree River Lodge was our first experience with African Bush Camps. There are not enough words in the English language to describe how amazing this experience was. The service is unparalleled. The amenities are impeccable. The food is absolutely out of this world (both in quality and quantity). Philip was our guide, Franklyn was our host, and Victor/Elvis were our waiters. We could not recommend them and this beautiful lodge highly enough. We were planning our return trip on the first night! On top of an amazing experience ABC is an incredible company, putting 10% of their earnings back into the community to help support the local people with medical clinics, building schools, and providing jobs etc. One last note: my wife has a tree nut allergy. ABC asked about food allergies ahead of time and made sure every single meal was safe to eat.

This beautiful lodge has an amazing location, with direct views to the Zambezi river. The rooms/tents have amazing views to the river and its islets, with many hippos, birds, crocodiles. They are also designed in a beautiful way, with plenty of space and all the comfort possible. The bungalow’s outside area is also stunning, with plenty of seating and relaxing space, highly pleasant and with breathtaking views. Through the day, with the light and skies ever changing, the scenario is a show. The common areas of the lodge are equally stylish, using natural materials such as wood, stone, copper. The result is stunning, creating a very calm atmosphere. We could do several activities, which were well organized. The sunset cruise near the lodge was particularly beautiful. The spa is also a good experience. Staff is attentive and professional. The access to Internet is the only less positive point of this lodge: only in the library and not working all the times. If this is to be limited to one specific area, then it should at least working effectively and all the time. Overall Thorntree is highly recommended for a visit to Victoria Falls.

My wife and I were on an 18 day trip including Cape Town, Winelands, Kruger and Victoria Falls (highly recommend said itinerary). We were considering the Victoria Falls Hotel but our agent recommended Thorntree and we decided on it last minute. We could not be more happy about the decision. The property and setting are breathtaking. Our stay included all meals and select activities. The highlight was the sunset cruises on the Zambezi (we were alone on the boat each evening). The resort is a one minute boat ride from the Elephant Cafe. Feeding the elephants is a must (can't remember the last time I laughed so much). It is also a three minute ride from the Rhino walk - another must. I was originally concerned about the distance from the falls but that was no issue at all (once you have your photo memories, there are just so many times you'll want to get soaked walking at the falls). The rooms are extremely elegant and feel brand new (the resort opened within the last few years and was closed for a while during Covid). The entire staff was amazing and it was an incredibly relaxing experience on the last stop of our tiring itinerary. My only suggestion would be for the resort to market themselves better to the US public and make online booking a bit more seamless. Finally, I am perplexed why the resort has a four star rating when it is undeniably a five star property. Two thumbs up!
