Situated on the banks of the mighty Zambezi Tongabezi lodge is everything one could wish from a luxury riverside lodge.
The staff is very proactive in their service so that nothing is left to your desires. They were civil, friendly, extremely helpful and great company for an evening at the camp fire.
Having spent 2 nights at the dog house and another 2 in the Honeymoon suite I can say that all accommodations are truly unique, clean and with very stylish interior decoration. For the cooler winter nights all beds are equipped with electric blankets and warm jugs are supplied every night.
Moreover, the abundance of activities offered by JC and her team ensure that there is never a dull moment. A visit to Livingstone Island and Angels/Devils pool is an absolute must and an unforgettable way to experience the Victoria Falls.
Last but not least, the food of chef Zuwi is of the highest quality. With most ingredients coming from Tongabezi’s own eco farm the lunches and dinners are a culinary experience in and of themselves.

We are so grateful to you for taking the time to tell us the story of your holiday with us. Tongabezi has many unique rooms and hidden spaces and we love that you managed to experience two different rooms and loved them as much as we do! There is nothing better to ward off the chill of the African winters than cozy fireside chatter in a warm blanket with an even warmer beverage... except, perhaps, our heated blankets at night. Many guests are not prepared for Zambia to be cold, but luckily our team is always prepared. Thank you for mentioning our wonderful Head Chef Zuwi. Did you know that he is not only a passionate garden-to-table chef, he has also been with Tongabezi for over twenty-five years? We are very proud of how much he has learned in our kitchens and on the training trips we have sent him on, and even more proud of how hard he works to train other young chefs in his footsteps. We hope to see you back very soon, Team Tongabezi

Tongabezi is still heaven. Even though this was our fifth visit, it was as magical as ever. Everything was just as we left it in 2019–gorgeous. The rooms and lounging spaces are exquisitely decorated, and the landscaping is beautiful. As always the food was fresh, healthy, and delicious thanks to Chef Vicus. But the jewel in Tongabezi’s crown is the service. The service here is second to none. We loved our valet Jato, and it was great to see old friends like JC, Lawrence, Aggie, Rhoda, Capt Felix, and Capt Ronald, and to make new friends. The Falls were stunning with more water than ever, so wear your raincoat!! Also, while you’re there, be sure to visit the school, Tujatane. It’s inspirational. And don’t miss the sunset cruise, but be sure to stay long enough to soak in every aspect of this beautiful place. (Four days is great.)

For those with Covid concerns, Tongabezi is the place to be. It is very spread out with more than enough room for social distancing. Our temperature was taken when we arrived. Hand sanitizer was plentiful and the staff all wore masks. All of the staff were also vaccinated. Africa is the place to be. They have taken things really seriously and are waiting with open arms, socially distanced of course.

Thank you to all our Tongabezi friends. We’ll be back.

We were so happy to have you back to visit us after such a long time. Thank you so much for this lovely review and for making mention of so many of the team. Glad to hear it was just as you left it! We so appreciate your support of both Tongabezi and Tujatane school – even during COVID times when traveling appears to be more difficult. We are happy to see International travel opening up and are hopeful for a brighter future as the vaccinations roll out. We are sure to see you again! Team Tongabezi

We stayed for 3 nights at Tongabezi in te the beginning of December. The lodge is just amazing! Couldn't describe how beautiful it is. We really loved all the different places where you can spend your time. The different lounge areas, or sitting by the fire place at night, sitting at an open deck on the top floor of a house overlooking the zambezi river, where you can see hippos. Just everything is amazing.

The fact that there are different houses with different themes just wants you to stay at each one of them! The details and atmosphere in every place looks like it's done with a lot of attention.

We stayed one night at the bird house, with our own private swimming pool and bath outside so you can take a bath under the stars overlooking the zambezi river! The bird house is very spacious and we loved everything about it.

The other 2 nights we stayed at Sindabezi, it's the private island! The room / tent is so romantic! The bathroom is open, so you feel close with nature. The bed is really cosy and you can sit in the front overlooking the river, or just chill in a hammock!

The two mornings waking up there were surreal. Because the room / tent is half open you wake up by the beautiful morning light with a sunrise. You hear birds chirping, the best sound for waking up. The staff brings you tea or coffee with homemade cookies at requested time! So you can slowly wake up with a cup of tea or coffee in your hand just sitting in front of the river. The two mornings we had a hippo right in front of us! Felt like a dream.

What we definitely loved was the special attention the staff of Tongabezi / Sindabezi gave us. They were so friendly and did everything to make us feel that this was a special vacation. For breakfast, lunch and dinner they changed the sitting spott so we saw every lovely place at Sindabezi and Tongabezi. That's something I didn't expect so everytime we went to eat something it felt like a little surprise were they would have seated us!

And the food is so good! We looked forward to every meal!

When you go to Tongabezi or Sindabezi just expect to have a romantic, wonderful vacation with great food, service and staff. Also you can do a lot of activities! Like going to the Victoria falls, Devils pool, take a sunset trip on a boat or go to the sand bar where you can have drinks looking at a wonderful sunset with hippos in the background.

We learned that a visit to Zambia is more about the activities than the animals. For people looking to be super active, this is your place. However, we chose mostly to just chill out on the property and there are a lot of very intimate and diverse settings by which to do that. Not only are there a number of intimate decks perched over the river where you can retreat to, but there are two thatched roof structures right on the river that serve as a library, game room and meeting area where you can comfortably retreat to.

The property has a very large gym (where unfortunately the television isn’t programmed and therefore is inoperable, and the cable/pulley machine is broken) and a wonderful heated lap pool. There’s also a secondary pool by the restaurant with a beautiful setting, but in desperate need of refinishing. We went to use the restroom by the gym to wash our hands but unfortunately there was no soap stocked.

Our room was situated directly on the river with a wonderful deck overlooking the river with breathtaking sunsets each night. The is spacious and well appointed, however there’s a number of deferred maintenance items like frayed lampshades, also fraid lamp shades in the common areas, wood doors that don’t close completely whereby a lot of cold air seats in at night, and housekeeping failed to replace the empty Kleenex box for a couple of days. We are used to refrigerators at other lodges being stocked with extensive beverage selections, which ours was not here. The first night we tried to get the heater operating by using the instructions, but it turns out that the instructions provided in the room were not accurate as to how to operate the system and we were very cold the first night in the room.

The service is excellent, friendly and truly appreciates you being in their country. Our butler Yvonne was very attentive with a friendly demeanor, and did her best to accommodate our every need. One of the highlights of our experience was a quartet from a local town that sang at dinner and also school children from the local school the lodge supports doing a performance during lunch. Absolutely fabulous touch!

The food was also excellent, particularly the soups each night. We appreciate the chef accommodating our desire to eat more lightly during dinner and making a beautiful salad as our entrée versus the Standard menu. The only area for improvement is that they don’t have good nonalcoholic adult alternatives. Every lodge we’ve been to so far has at minimum nonalcoholic beer, which is easy to source locally.

Last is that the property could use some other form of first impression. The property is on a slope and the top of the slope is the arrival point which is a dirt pad area with a covered parking area for their vehicles. Something needs to be done with this area to beautify it and provide a hint that you were about to step into something beautiful and wonderful as our first impression created great concern for where we were about to stay.

This place has all of the location and personnel to be excellent, but just lacks the attention to detail that would otherwise make it excellent, in our experience.

We stayed in the Tree House....what a great experience. The Vervet Monkeys welcomed us by finding a kleenex box after we arrived and when we came back to our "room" after lunch, everything was covered in shredded kleenex! J.C. offered another room for us but we quickly declined. Nyambe, our personal room butler, kept the monkeys at bay after that and thankfully, they never visited at night. We loved staying in the Tree House.
Tongebezi Lodge offered so many wonderful experiences. Lawrence took us on a great tour of Victoria Falls and some exciting game drives. Lizzy was a sparkling jewel and made our stay so fun. She made us lemon drop martinis and always had a smile on her beautiful face. Nyambe took wonderful care of us and our stay could not have been better. We were able to visit the beautiful children at the Tongebezi Trust School and personally observe the wonderful work they are doing there. The children were as excited to sing for us as we were to hear them. Such an amazing four-day stay we had at this safari camp!!!

During our stay at Tongabezi we had a lovely experience with the staff and management. They truly catered to all our needs and more than just exceeded our expectations. Whilst at Tonga and Sindabezi (what a paradise on the Zambezi River!) we enjoyed amazing service from Rita and Lizzy who accompanied us at both locations! Furthermore we had an excellent guide in Douglas who took us to see White Rhinos, rafting, and much more! So one the one hand we could enjoy the tranquillity of the locations, the delicious food and staff, on the other hand we had the thrill of a lifetime at Livingstone Island dangling in Angel's Pool and Rafting on the Zambezi.

Everything was so well taken care of, you can't even wish for more! Thanks a million to the Tongabezi Team!!

This lodge was the perfect place to relax after several days of a tented safari. I would love to go back! Staff were all very friendly and attentive—I wanted for nothing. There was no pressure to take part in activities; information was provided, and, aside from a trip to nearby Victoria Falls (with a reasonable $20 park fee that everyone pays) and a no cost sunset cruise (in addition to a surprise onsite cultural event), I chose to mostly laze around, read, enjoy the river view, and enjoy the pool. My traveling companions, who came later, enjoyed a variety of activities. The buildings and furnishings—all the decor—are gorgeous, unique, and comfortable.
I spent three nights there alone and felt perfectly safe. I slept so soundly! They have security and the property is fenced and walled off. Still, there are plenty of monkeys on-site….very cute.
A special plus is that the lodge is community oriented. The small gift shop offers an abundance of unique crafts, and some proceeds support the nearby school.
The only drawback is that it’s a very long plane ride to get there from the US! Oh, and, yes, the Covid test I got onsite was required for me to travel to Zimbabwe, back to South Africa, and on to the US. I viewed this as a service rather than a lodge requirement.

Even though this was my first time visiting the African continent, a feeling of arriving home came upon me as I set foot on the beautiful terrains of Tongabezi. The way the lodge is set up provides a unique sense of cosiness, while still having loads of space to roam around the premises and discover the Zambezi river and the spectacular wildlife it accommodates. The lodge is characterised by having different levels, loads of trees in which you can spot little vervet monkeys, and many different main areas from where you can witness a breathtakingly beautiful sunset, or where you can sit around the fire meeting other guests if you wish to do so.

As for the accommodation, we stayed in the Nut House as well as one of the chalets. While the Nut House has its own private pool and is more spacious than the chalets (especially the bathroom is rather astonishing), the chalets are incredibly charming, cosy, and form a little sanctuary in an already magical place. Both are decorated with exquisite taste, and radiate warmth and a homely atmosphere.

Then the staff: they were ever so lovely, and what surprised me most was that they were so sincere in their hospitality. Sometimes when you go to restaurants or stay at hotels, you can sense that the staff is merely being professional and that being friendly is part of the job. At Tongabezi, however, it was clear that all the staff, from the drivers to the waiters to the chefs, were really being themselves and they were always in for a chat. They were so thoughtful too, making sure your every need was met before you even realising you needed something.

A last thing to mention is that while Tongabezi is a place where one could most definitely come into complete relaxation, there is adventure in abundance. From rhino walks to bungeejumping to stunning views of the Victoria Falls – experiences that will last you a lifetime are guaranteed.

Greetings from Tongabezi! You have managed to capture our little slice of paradise so perfectly in your incredibly generous review. Thank you so much for taking the time to describe our magical views and vistas of the mighty Zambezi. At Tongabezi (as a member of the Green Safaris family) we work very hard to keep our home green. We love our trees and always build around them where possible. This means that often you can see a riverine ebony happily growing through our decks, or even (in the case of the Tree House) growing through our rooms! We also boast a wonderful organic garden on the premises, which we are very proud of. We also love that you mentioned our team. The Tongabezi Team is almost entirely from the local villages and town, as we believe in training up and offering opportunities in an otherwise very vulnerable area. This is why, as you mentioned, our team feels confident and proud to chat and interact with our guests: they know that they are the heart and soul of Tongabezi. Having your own personal valet also enables guests to create a personal bond with a member of the team, and makes leaving all the harder... .. which is why we hope to have you back very, very soon. Team Tongabezi

From the very moment you arrive at Tongabezi there are two things that stand out.

Firstly, the premises is like something you tend to see only on the TV. The most impressive part of this, to me, was that it was not just certain parts of the estate that had this surreal air, but rather the entire lodge up to the smallest details, from the astounding main buildings, to the luscious gardens that guide you to your rooms, even the showers will have you questioning what it will take to bring one home with you.

All that being said, there is an even more integral part to the Tongabezi experience: the staff. Never, ever in my life have I been treated with such sincere, comprehensive care. The hosts, hostesses and the management will welcome you, satisfy your every need, and make you feel truly at home, all with a smile. And then the food… I had some expectations considering the overal luxury that this lodge boasts, but those expectations were blown out of the water from the very first lunch, and then again, and again, you get the point. The consistency of the level of the food is simply incredible. Three course meals, twice a day, always with vegetarian options, always spectacular and last but not least, always at different, stunning locations on the premises.

The Tongabezi experience is so incredible that I have been dreaming of sharing it with everyone I care about, since the moment I left, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Our chefs are grinning from ear to ear. We are so appreciative of your compliments regarding the chef's meals. They take a lot of care and pride in the work they do and it is certainly not an easy task to please everyone’s palate. We are so happy that we managed to do so during your stay... 'again and again'! We are also delighted that our team (our Tongabezi family, most of whom have been trained from the local village and all of whom are part of our greater Green Safaris Dream of empowering Zambia to a brighter future) will be carried fondly in your memories of your time spent with us. Which room has the bathtub on the deck? On which you can see the view
Answer from Tongabezi
Livingstone, Zambia11 contributions
The Honeymoon House has a secret outdoor tub and the Bird House has an outdoor tub with a big view! The Tree House is entirely open so although the tub is 'indoors' it feels as though you are right on the Zambezi. Otherwise, if it's magical outdoor bathing you're looking for, have a think about Sindabezi Island! Chalet 1 and 5 have outdoor showers and bathtubs facing the national park. Hope this helps!
