Chundukwa River Lodge is an African Bush Lodge built on stilts overlooking the Zambezi river. It is beautifully situated with panoramic views of the river - upstream from the Victoria Falls. Offering the best of both worlds - only 30 min from the falls and far enough from Livingstone town to be away from the noise of helicopters and traffic. Essentially perfect for nature and bird lovers and for those who simply want to absorb the best of Africa. There are flights from Johannesburg and Lusaka every day and easy road access from Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. Our separate private thatched cottage is perfect for those wanting to enjoy a home on the Zambezi. It has 1 double en-suite bedroom, 1 double/twin bedroom and one child's bedroom, a second bathroom, an open plan lounge/kitchen area, shaded patio, deck and rock splash pool and is perfect for families. The cottage comes fully staffed with a personal waiter and house-keeper.

What a lovely place at the end of an unremarkable and unsigned dirt road. The grounds are lovely, the view of the Zambezi is wonderful, the chalets are beautiful with wonderful views. Best of all the owners are there and definitely hands on. The staff follows suit and everything is well done except for the food offerings which go way beyond well done. They are superb. They also have horses for riding and other activities we did not have time to try. Next time we will stay longer.

We choose Chundukwa as we wanted to continue the theme of the wild after leaving or safari base in South Luangwa rather than opt for a big, corporate in Livingstone and we're so glad we did. This is a wonderful, family run lodge, with a real passion for the wildlife, environment and local people. There are only 5 or 6 lodges I think, our was number 3 and was huge ! we had a balcony overlooking the Zambezi River. It was really well equipped with double shower, massive bath, mosquito nets, electric kettle and all UK plug sockets. It get very cold this time of the year, the plus side to that is there are no Tseste fly or mosquitos really and I would normally get bitten to pieces but I didn't get bitten once. The main area is lovely, with fire pits and chairs dotted around to relax in the evening. The staff are just wonderful and a real credit to Doug and Gail. Nothing was too much trouble. I have to say too that the food was absolutely outstanding !! My husband and I don't eat meat so sometimes you are faced with some fairly boring options but not here. The quality and imagination was really excellent. We had a beautiful curried apple soup, chickpea curry and home made breads, a beautiful roasted vegetable pasta salad (which I actually asked for the recipe) a pancake with beans and spinach for breakfast we had pancakes with chocolate spread, muffins, the most delicious French toast with honey that's on top of the cereal, cooked breakfast available and fruit and yogurt. there was so much wonderful food available it was hard to not just keep eating. Doug and Gail and their staff obviously really love the animals they care for on site too. They have ex-polo horses, cows, goats etc. and all are living the life of luxury. We saw lots of hippos on the river and crocodiles on our sunset cruise. The main reason we went to Livingstone though was to see the falls and do the rhino walk. Got absolutely soaked at the falls, don't bother with your own rain coats, you need the ponchos from the hawkers there, they are the only thing that will keep you totally dry underneath. Would recommend something like crocs and shorts to walk along the bridge then a change of shoes to trainers maybe to do the boiling point (pretty hard walk up and down) and the rest of the walk and maybe a change of sorts or trousers Went to The Royal Livingstone for lunch and a cocktail, its a must really but I'm glad we didn't stay there. Food was very nice but not a patch on Chundukwas and there are too many people and too dressy for us. No need for dressing up at Chundukwa, just warm clothes for the evening this time of the year. Maybe take a torch for walking back to the room too We also did the rhino walk from here too but organised it through Chundukwa, it's a very expensive thing to do but it's a once in a lifetime experience and it will be your only chance of seeing rhino in Zambia as they are extinct here. There are only 10 in this park that are under constant protection, we saw 5 of them after an hours walk which was amazing. We were out for about 3.5 hours. After you are given a drink and some banana bread which was a nice touch Wonderful lodge, thoroughly recommend it

Dear Sarah, thank you for sharing your Chundukwa experiences, much of what you say is great information for potential travellers to this area. Visiting the White Rhinos in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park where you can approach them on foot is a very special and a popular activity amongst our guests. As you say, the Zambezi River is still very high in May, June and July so this is the time to experience the spray and you will get very, very wet! Whilst a raincoat does help it is sometimes worth feeling that spray and the exhileration of it, and then dry off ( we will make sure there is clean towel handy) and change into some dry clothes. Having your own private car and guide for the day which is part of our fully inclusive package is helpful so you can leave your things in the car when you go through the spray. Thank you again and hoping you will be able to make it back to Africa again in the near future!

From the moment we arrived we were treated with the most amazing hospitality. Everyone was so incredibly friendly and helpful. Nothing was ever too much for them. A particular mention has to go to Augs, Faith, Sharon and Victor who made our stay so enjoyable and memorable and the host Gail. The food was abundant and delicious with a varied menu each day. The in-house activities and ones arranged through the lodge were all great fun and exhilarating. Angels Pool on Livingstone Island, river cruise lunch and river safari with Titus from Safari Park Excellence were particular highlights. We'll never forget the view of the mighty Zambezi River and hippos from our terrace at Chunda Cottage and the peaceful sounds of nature. Not a single negative thing to stay about our stay, 5 star luxury.

Thank you for sharing your feedback! We loved hosting you and were glad we could arrange your activities according to your interests and pace that you wanted. There is so much you can do here and of course you can also do nothing and simply enjoy the river, the hippos and being in nature. Staying on our private house called Chundu Cottage right on the Zambezi River with the option to be catered for privately is a great way to spend time as a family catching up with each other and having a good relaxing holiday! Next time we hope you can make it in the summer so you can make more use of the swimming pool too! We promise the water is warmer! We are super happy you enjoyed the food. Its an ongoing conversation in our team as we discuss what sorts of deliciousness we can share with you. Very much looking forward to having you back one of these days. Our very best wishes to all of you from all of us!

My wife and I visited Chundukwa River Lodge between Safaris in Greater Kruger and South Luangwa Nat'l Parks. We were made to feel welcome from the very moment we arrived. Our visit was in May which is winter in Africa. Our Chalet had screened windows and therefore was a bit cold at night. Gail, one of the owners, had her staff measure, cut and install polyethylene clear plastic over all the windows in order to make us more comfortable. Gail and her entire staff went to extraordinary measures throughout our stay to ensure an enjoyable experience. Great people, great food, wonderful accomodations and delightful common areas are just a start. A Zambezi river cruise, cocktails around the fire pit, and a management team offering many exciting and varied activities during your stay, all combine to make your time at Chundukwa most rewarding . My wife and I would very highly recommend Chundukwa River Lodge as part of ones itinerary. Kudos to Gail and her staff for a job exceedingly well done!!

We wanted to see Victoria falls, but didn't want to be in the hustle and bustle of the city, so we chose Chundukwa River Lodge , 30 mins away. We are so glad we chose this place. The location was superb. The lodges are right on the banks of the river, and at night you can hear the hippos in the distance. The rooms and very well equipped with all modern amenities. They have added special touches such as electric blankets, (it turned chilly at night when we went, early July) which were turned on each night when they turned down our bed. There is a bar / restaurant area where we had breakfast and dinner, again overlooking the river. At night and early morning a fire is light on the patio which just added to the lovely ambiance of the place. The food was exceptional and could have easily stood its ground in a top London restaurant. We went for an evening boat trip along the river with canapés and drinks and also took advantage of a horse ride from their stables. The whole area within the camp is lovely to walk around and look and listen to the birds and wildlife. The owners Doug and Gail are a delight to meet and talk to along with all the staff who are so friendly and helpful. To top off the dedication of Gail, we accidently left our Samsung Tab in our room and didn't notice until we got to the airport. We accepted that we had lost it and would contact Gail when we got home. However, 20 mins before we boarded the plane Gail came running through the airport with security to hand us the Tab. We can not thank her enough. We would highly recommend the lodge to anyone visiting Livingstone area.

We have such happy memories of your stay and the wonderful evenings and chilly mornings spent around the fire - in African style. We are so glad you felt at home at Chundukwa and were able to partake in lots of activities of your choice with the added convenience of having a complimentary private car and driver for a full day to take you around town and visit Victoria Falls. Yes and what a luck that we found you at the airport! The joys of Africa that you are still allowed through all the security checks (chaperoned of course!) to deliver special items to guests :-) Indeed it is a small world here and a place to feel safe and cared for. Thank you so much for visiting and we hope to see you again one of these days. Our very best wishes to all of you.

I stayed here for 2 nights when visiting Victoria Falls with family. The lodge is gorgeous and our room was a really unique experience- we had a private hut with a river view. The beds are luxurious and have a net for insects, and the blankets were heated. The bathroom was spectacular and the food was excellent. The staff was incredibly friendly and we enjoyed chatting with them about life in Zambia. They were wonderful with booking us extra activities beyond what was included. The owners’ dogs are also very cute!

Dear Annie, thank you so much for sharing us on Trip adviser and we are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us - especially the heated blankets in winter as waking up on the Zambezi River can be pretty chilly in June and July whilst the days are warm and sunny. We are also pleased you got to do so many activities and make the most of your time here. Nyutzi and Choo will be waiting to greet you on your return! Our very wishes from the whole team!

My partner and I stopped here for the morning so I could do the half day ride. It was amazing, my guide Victor was very knowledgeable and friendly. The staff looked after my partner whilst I was out riding and then we had a beautiful lunch on the deck. It’s a must visit for a peaceful relaxing time.

My husband and I spent several nights at the Chundukwa River Lodge on a detour to Victoria Falls from a longer South Africa trip. Our accommodations at Chundukwa and the hospitality we experienced while there were hands down the best of the trip (the best we’ve experienced anywhere in the world for that matter.) We loved the open-air nature of the chalets that open onto the Zambezi River and all the outdoor common areas. The bedding, mosquito canopies, and fans, were top notch and made for very comfortable nights. The multi course meals were all exceptional. The owners Gail and Doug live on site and are fully involved in the operation of the lodge. They are full of knowledge and experience and are the most welcoming hosts. Essentially, they help you decide how you would like to spend your time in Zambia/ Vic Falls, and then they make it all happen seamlessly. Their help and hospitality (and of course the magical location of the lodge) will make your time in Zambia unforgettable!

It was a real pleasure meeting you both and we are so glad you were able to 'imbibe' all aspects of the Chundukwa offering. We hope you will be able to return one day when the kids are a little older. Our very best regards from Doug and Gail

We had the privilege of staying at this wonderful River Lodge and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Our gracious hosts, Doug and Gail made us feel so welcome and we loved our time with them sitting around the fire hearing about what life is like in this part of the world. The bed was so warm and comfy, the meals amazing, and the river cruise was peaceful with many wonderful birds, but what we remember most is how we felt at Chundukwa - a special place that made us feel like we were at a home away from home and that the crew at Chundukwa River Lodge truly cared. So grateful for these precious memories!

Hi Eleanor - they say that memories hold stronger when you were made not only to see the beautiful sights of a place but to feel the energy or vibe that went with it. This is the greatest compliment and we are so grateful and happy! We hope your precious memories of Chundukwa will last a very long time and we look forward to welcoming you back for some more fireside chats one day in our peaceful spot on the Zambezi River. Best wishes Doug and Gail

Chundukwa was one of the nicest lodges I've stayed at on the continent. Gail and Doug provide 5-star luxury while still maintaining a homey, comfortable atmosphere. We stayed in the "honeymoon" chalet and one of the other, smaller chalets, and they were both beautiful--lovely wood furnishings that fit in perfectly with the surrounding bush. The food was incredible--perfectly prepared, and they catered well to our vegetarian needs. The food, prepared by a local chef with local, seasonal ingredients, was far better than most of the more expensive lodges we've been to....we just ate a bit too much ;) Both the sunset cruise and the horseback ride in the bush were fantastic. This is the best place to go in Zambia if you're a horse lover. Doug's fantastic string of well-schooled Boerperds, Quarter Horses, and Thoroughbreds includes a horse to suit every rider's needs. During our ride, they were able to cater for me (an experienced rider), my mom (an experienced rider with a broken arm), and my boyfriend (a complete novice). They also offer multi-day horse safaris for the keen rider. For international visitors, this would be the perfect place to explore the falls and nearby Chobe and Zambezi national parks. For Zambian residents, it's a beautiful bush getaway on a stunning part of the river. We will definitely be back!

Thank you for your positive feedback and really pleased you enjoyed your stay and of course the additional perk of having horses nearby. Indeed there is so much to do in these parts that you can easily hang your hat up for a few days and enjoy the river, the falls, eat delicious food and ride to your hearts content! We hope to see you again some day soon. Our best Doug and Gail and the team.
