Chundukwa River Lodge is an African Bush Lodge built on stilts overlooking the Zambezi river. It is beautifully situated with panoramic views of the river - upstream from the Victoria Falls. Offering the best of both worlds - only 30 min from the falls and far enough from Livingstone town to be away from the noise of helicopters and traffic. Essentially perfect for nature and bird lovers and for those who simply want to absorb the best of Africa. There are flights from Johannesburg and Lusaka every day and easy road access from Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. Our separate private thatched cottage is perfect for those wanting to enjoy a home on the Zambezi. It has 1 double en-suite bedroom, 1 double/twin bedroom and one child's bedroom, a second bathroom, an open plan lounge/kitchen area, shaded patio, deck and rock splash pool and is perfect for families. The cottage comes fully staffed with a personal waiter and house-keeper.

Chundukwa was one of the nicest lodges I've stayed at on the continent. Gail and Doug provide 5-star luxury while still maintaining a homey, comfortable atmosphere. We stayed in the "honeymoon" chalet and one of the other, smaller chalets, and they were both beautiful--lovely wood furnishings that fit in perfectly with the surrounding bush. The food was incredible--perfectly prepared, and they catered well to our vegetarian needs. The food, prepared by a local chef with local, seasonal ingredients, was far better than most of the more expensive lodges we've been to....we just ate a bit too much ;) Both the sunset cruise and the horseback ride in the bush were fantastic. This is the best place to go in Zambia if you're a horse lover. Doug's fantastic string of well-schooled Boerperds, Quarter Horses, and Thoroughbreds includes a horse to suit every rider's needs. During our ride, they were able to cater for me (an experienced rider), my mom (an experienced rider with a broken arm), and my boyfriend (a complete novice). They also offer multi-day horse safaris for the keen rider. For international visitors, this would be the perfect place to explore the falls and nearby Chobe and Zambezi national parks. For Zambian residents, it's a beautiful bush getaway on a stunning part of the river. We will definitely be back!

Thank you for your positive feedback and really pleased you enjoyed your stay and of course the additional perk of having horses nearby. Indeed there is so much to do in these parts that you can easily hang your hat up for a few days and enjoy the river, the falls, eat delicious food and ride to your hearts content! We hope to see you again some day soon. Our best Doug and Gail and the team.

Spent 5 nights at Chundukwa as the second half of a birthday celebration holiday. The location is incredible, such a beautiful spot. The accommodation was lovely, only 5 lodges, each unique. We had the honeymoon suite which was so nice. Lovely toiletries. Also offered free laundry which was great. Tea /coffee would be bought to your room in the morning before breakfast. The food was so nice. There was no choice with the 3 course evening meal but every meal we had was delicious. The staff were so attentive and friendly. The lodge are eco friendly and do a lot for the local community. They did a special birthday celebration for me on the last night which will be an evening I never forget. Good location to do trips to Botswana, other national parks and visit to Victoria Falls. Also did a visit to the local village and school which I would recommend doing. Thanks so much all at Chundukwa, we really did have the holiday of a lifetime.

Dear ktmann Thanks so much for your detailed review. It was super having the 3 of you here for a balance of chilling, exploring and birthday celebrations. Hope the party back home was fabulous too! With enough days, you can easily explore the Falls, the activities of the area, as well as outings to nearby national parks in Zim and Botswana and our Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park just down the road. But I think you got the balance right with time to watch and enjoy going out on the Zambezi, chill at the lodge - and all the bird watching too! Please don't wait for another birthday before coming back! From all of us at Chundukwa

I spent 3 nights at Chundukwa River Lodge (3 night package) and had an amazing time. The accommodation is amazing. It is beautifully situated on the Zambezi River. The rooms are comfortable and clean, the food is amazing (all fresh and homemade) and the staff is so friendly. Everyone really looks after you and they make you feel at home. I had coffee brought to my room every morning if I had an early trip planned. Also the give you really good advice in what to do or see. I would definitely come back and would recommend this place to everyone!!

We had no idea what to expect and reality was unreal! Sleeping in a thatched-roof cabin by the river's edge, listening to hippos and birds and more, was a unique experience. The service and food were perfect. Our tour of Victoria Falls was great, we visited the rare white rhinos, we relaxed by the pool, one of us went fishing on the Zambezi! (a fisher's dream). It was hard to say good-bye to our lovely hosts, Gail and Doug and their team. Thanks for the birthday gift! Great memories all around.

Dear JZelly Thank you for your 5* review! So good to hear that you enjoyed staying in our open-fronted river chalets, right on the water - and the chorus of birds, hippos and frogs that form our background 'orchestra'. The warm days leading up to our rainy season are perfect for 'all things water' - be it fishing, sunset cruises, ambling alongside the river or cooling off in the pool. We love special occasions too - so glad we can be a part of special memories! Best wishes from all of us here on the Zambezi.

This was our last stop on an 11 day trip to Botswana and Zambia booked through Audley travel. Audley had categorised Chundukwa River Lodge as ‘medium’ and we were therefore expecting good quality but not luxury. How wrong we were! Everything about Chundukwa was special - the location, the warm welcome, the accommodation, the food, and in particular, the people who work there. Some of the rooms have been refurbished - ours hadn’t but it was beautiful - a large, spacious room and bathroom with double shower. The room was open to the river and the views were breathtaking. (There are ‘roller-blinds’ which can be lowered for warmth during cold periods). Knowing there were no windows, we had been concerned before travelling about bugs and wildlife noise - we were troubled by neither- instead we enjoyed waking up at sunrise to the beautiful view and hot tea/coffee and biscotti being delivered to our room pre-breakfast. And then there was breakfast! Every morning there was a different treat - pancakes, hot muffins etc in addition to a choice of continental and cooked breakfasts. We had booked a full-board package which meant if we were around the lodge at lunchtime, we were always treated to a lovely, freshly cooked lunch. Dinner was something else - 3 courses of stunning food every evening - better than many top-class restaurants we have been to. After dinner we relaxed on the sofas around the fire pit, enjoying a few glasses of wine as we chatted with fellow-guests. The lodge organise all activities for you - we enjoyed a helicopter ride over the falls and into the gorge (well worth paying for the ‘mid-level’ trip which takes you into the gorge), a day trip exploring the falls from both Zambia and Zimbabwe (get the Kaza visa), rhino trekking, horse riding, a half-day canoe trip on the river (avoiding the resident hippos!), and white water rafting (I went to the spa whilst my husband did this!). The real stars of Chundukwa are the people who work there - nothing was too much trouble and the people and ‘little touches’ (electric blankets, thermos flasks of water, bottomless cookies etc) make this one of the best places we have ever stayed. On our first evening, we were taken on a sunset cruise by Alex, one of the waiters/guides. We were the only guests on the boat that evening and Alex was a fantastic guide/host, spotting animals and birds and then allowing us to soak up the atmosphere and watch the many beautiful birds as we drank gin and tonic and enjoyed the beautiful canapés/snacks from the cool box. The owners,Gail and Doug, the management team, Alison and Beanie, and all the staff we encountered were warm, friendly, welcoming and made every day here special. This wasn’t a ‘medium’ property - it was truly ‘first-class’ in every respect.

Thank you Elaine for your wonderfully detailed review and generous feedback. We are so excited to hear about all the 'special moments' that you enjoyed with us. We are in fact priced as a 'mid-range' lodge, and yet having said that we do love to pride ourselves in the details and taking care of you in the old fashioned sense of Zambian hospitality. We hope you will make it back this way again - perhaps when the falls fuller in the first half of the year. Our warmest regards from the whole team!
