Royal Chundu Zambezi River Lodge is the kind of place where nature is untouched and you are humbled by the magic that surrounds you. The lodge has two locations – the mainland and the exclusive private island in the center of the Zambezi River. Royal Chundu is a place of picturesque beauty that merges seamlessly with nature and is tucked away in the midst of unique plant species from giant ferns to ancient trees, some as old as 1,500 years.

Royal Chundu was simply a magical stay for us on our honeymoon coming from America. We have never before been met with service or hospitality like we were at Royal Chundu. The staff went above and beyond to make it an unforgettable experience. We really enjoyed the spacious accommodations, the absolutely incredible food (both traditional Zambian cuisine and foods like that which we’d find on menus back home in America), and the activities available at the lodge. We cannot recommend this place enough. It’s the best place we’ve ever seated.

My wife and I recently spent 2 nights at the Island Lodge. We had spent 40 hours traveling from the USA to Livingstone and from the minute we landed to the minute we departed we could not have been treated better. After the drive from the airport to the lodge, which is about 50 minutes, we were greeted by Aggie and her staff. All I can say is wow! From the immediate 10 minute stick massage of our necks and shoulders to the short boat ride to the Island Lodge and immediate sit down lunch in on the hotel patio we could not have been more impressed. Aggie then sat with us to go over possible activities (way too many for us to do in that short time) during our day and a half we would be there. The room was spectacular with a completely private setting overlooking the Zambezi River. There are only 4 rooms on the island and so it was all so private. There was air conditioning which was nice, great shower, and an outdoor bathtub (more later). After a short rest we were then taken on a sunset cruise on the river which is a real highlight. Great snacks and drinks as well as gorgeous sunset and views of baboons and an African Fish Eagle. When we got back we were asked what time we wanted to have dinner (completely up to us) and then went to the room where the bathtub was filled with a bubble bath, dark and candlelit, and a bottle of champagne. It could not have been more romantic. Dinner was fantastic. The next day we had a guided tour of Victoria Falls- March is perfect time to see them from the Zambia side as the river was flowing almost at its peak. Another highlight was the canoe trip to a private beach where we had a lunch buffet that included grilled meats, chicken, veggies, salads, and their own pizza oven. The day concluded with a boat trip to the village where many of the staff live and where the grandmother of one of the staff members showed us around. She and the rest of the staff could not have been more appreciative of our coming to the lodge and of how the tourism dollars spent there have improved their lives. It was tremendously heartwarming. The evening concluded with another lovely bubble bath and dinner. There are no words to really describe the warmth and hospitality that we felt by all the staff and we commend all of them and thank them. I should mention that it was my birthday the first night and they had a great cake with candles and the staff sang Happy Birthday- that was really special. I highly recommend the Royal Chundu for all these reasons with STAFF, privacy, activities, and food being the highlights.

My husband and I stayed at the Royal Chundu Lodge in Zambia for our visit to Victoria Falls. The location is superb, right on the Zambezi River. Accommodations were luxurious, food wonderful and the service was excellent. We highly recommend this place.

This is not our first visit to the magnificent Royal Chundu lodge and yet we were totally blown away by our experience. It is set in an oasis of tranquility and is breathtakingly beautiful. The Island lodge is extremely private and it felt as if we had the entire stretch of the Zambezi, as far as the eye could see, to ourselves. While paddling on the Zambezi I was struck by how we are experiencing the last few places in the world that are still untouched-what an immense privilege to experience that in such luxury amongst such kind and friendly people. The decor is quintessentially Zambian and completely unique. The suites are GORGEOUS! Complete with a hot bubble bath on the deck under the stars to greet you after a delicious dinner. The staff at Royal Chundu come from the local village. Many of them were part of the team that built the lodge and are still working at the lodge years later. The staff are happy, friendly and seem genuinely invested in creating an unforgettable experience. Nothing is too great an ask. For example, I complemented the staff on their beautiful uniforms and a few hours later they arranged a visit from the local village Taylor to take my measurements and make my own bespoke Zambian outfit with the beautiful chitenge fabric I had chosen. A romantic candlelit dinner under the 1000 year old baobab tree on the island is a MUST! I left with the feeling that it’s unlikely that we will ever experience something as special as Royal Chundu lodge again. Naturally we have started planning our next visit, this time with the kids 😉

Booked this Lodge through our travel agent. Our package was all inclusive, including wines and spirits and worth it !! What a beautiful surprise. Hotel manager greated us and immediately took our family to have lunch. This lodge is small, about ten independent villas. All overlooking the Zambezi Rivera. Beautifully decorated with modern bathroom and huge double showers. They recycle and make a huge effort not to make a big footprint on the environment. Their location is perfect. Every Evening they take you on a private river cruise where you can savor your favorite wine and snacks. Binoculors were available for bird watching and to spot hippos and crocodiles. Yes, they are all over ! Dinner was served on demand no set time. Table was prepared so beautifully each evening. The menu each evening was delicious and the servings were generous. I must signal out Mr. Combo and Mr David. These two gentlemen were the example of commitment and dedication. We arranged a helicopter tour of the Victoria Falls and River Rafting Tour through the hotel manager. Everything was flawless.
