Royal Chundu Zambezi River Lodge is the kind of place where nature is untouched and you are humbled by the magic that surrounds you. The lodge has two locations – the mainland and the exclusive private island in the center of the Zambezi River. Royal Chundu is a place of picturesque beauty that merges seamlessly with nature and is tucked away in the midst of unique plant species from giant ferns to ancient trees, some as old as 1,500 years.

Royal Chundu in Zambia is an outstanding Relais & Chateau property (the only one in Zambia) with two small luxury lodges - one on the banks of the "Mighty Zambezi" River (River Lodge), and another on a private island in the middle of the Zambezi (Island Lodge). Expect superb service and food, luxurious accommodation and a breathtaking setting with the best sunrises and sunsets you'll ever see. If you stay at Island Lodge (the nicer, because it is more private and exclusive), you'll come home in the evening from your sunset boat ride to the fluffiest bubble bath you'll ever experience, waiting for you in your outside bath under the stars, with the trickling sounds of the Zambezi River running by. Each day, you go out on a boat up and down the Zambezi, looking for game like hippos, crocodiles and elephants. While the game is not always plentiful, the scenery is lush and beautiful and the bird watching superlative. The staff at Royal Chundu are warm and attentive. Depending on your interests, you will experience different activities every day, including canoeing and a picnic, fishing for the iconic tiger fish and visiting the local village, where the residents grow all the fresh vegetables for the lodge. Take some money, because they sell lovely local crafts like baskets, mats, colourful African cloths and carved wooden animals. The small gift shop in the river lodge is also very good and worth visiting. The food is excellent and the drinks plentiful - all included in your rate. Royal Chundu is about an hour's drive from Livingstone. If you can afford it, treat yourself and get a helicopter to the lodge (they will organise this for you), which will fly you over the Victoria Falls and through the gorges below, which is an exhilarating experience. I can't recommend this lodge highly enough. It is truly one of the best I have ever been lucky enough to stay at. I have been three times and would go back tomorrow!

If heaven was a place on earth, wow wow wow. From the moment we arrived Aggie and her whole team have been so kind and looked after us with such amazing care….canoeing through the small Zambezi rapids followed by a “picnic” , Pimms, pizza from a full pizza oven, fresh Zambezi bream, fillet steak seared on skewers with beautiful salads and sauces all prepared by our own chef and waiter, hammocks strung up to relax in afterwards, perfect….sunset cruises, stillness, beautiful light, elephants crossing the river, ask for a glass of water to accompany the sunset drinks and get lemon, lime, fresh mint, ice all in a beautiful glass with water poured in, quite a glass of water, amazing….visit the local village and listen to Edith describe how life has changed over the years and the massive role that RC has played in giving opportunities to the village, particularly the young women….enjoy an outside bath, each evening run so after dinner you have 20 plus lanterns providing gentle light and bubbles that seem to last forever, so relaxing…..we could go on but just come if you can, this is a beautiful beautiful place, we loved it. Thank you to everyone at RC, just wonderful.

Royal Chundu is a little slice of heaven. We stayed for three nights in the river lodge and I cannot find fault with any of our time there. The stand out feature is the staff - manager Aggi is warm and welcoming and her staff are attentive, friendly, helpful and are great singers! From our helpful and patient driver, to the knowledgeable boat crews, to the kayaking guides, to the excellent massage therapists, to the housekeeping, restaurant and kitchen staff they are all exceptional people. We were also privileged to be shown around the local village where many staff live by Mamma Edith who showed us her bountiful garden and how they live sustainably. She was a delight to meet. The food was amazing (much of it sourced from the village) and plentiful too - expect to eat well (recommend loose trousers 😀). We cannot rate this lodge highly enough. Thank you to Aggi and her beautiful staff 💜

we stayed here to see the Falls. We were amazed at all the other stuff we did at this property. Aggie the GM is awesome. We did the canoe trip, with a picnic lunch on the river bank. The Canoe trip was just as good as the Falls!! Don't miss the canoe ride. We also did the sunset cruise and did the village tour. The village tour is also not too be missed! The sunset cruise was amazing. We are all in our late 60's and came for 2 different safaris. This was a 2 night stay to see the falls. I had no idea how great all the other stuff would be. Aggie also had some "diner". surprises ( I assume everyone get this), I won't spoil it ...But you will be amazed what she sets up for an amazing evening! Food and rooms were outstanding. We also stopped at the Livingston food market on the way back from the falls, and I did a walk to the other village near the start of canoe trip. Aggie sent a staff member to walk with me. This stay exceed my expectations. and Aggie is doing terrific work to teach hospitality to well deserving youth!

I have stayed at many Relais hotels but this was one of my all time favorites. As with all Relais the accommodations were exceptional, our room was gorgeous and well appointed. Food was amazing, one leal was better than the next. And the bubble bath that they had ready for me at the end of every day was a big plus. :-) It is quiet, serene and peaceful and I have never slept better in my entire life. What separates this hotel was the level of service. The staff could not have been any more accommodating or gracious. Hessah & Madam welcomed us with a warm smile every time we saw them, Anthony our driver was so fun & interesting, he taught us so much about the culture. David was absolutely amazing & made sure our glasses were always filled 🥂 Vasco was our boat driver who felt more like a lifelong friend. I have left many hotels and although I have had great service I have never remembered the people (or even names for that matter) like I will from the Royal Chundu. It was more than a luxury vacation it felt more like family welcoming you to their home. I will reccomend this beautiful lodge to family & friends. It is a once in a lifetime experience... that I will do more than once ❤️

My husband and I went on a trip of a lifetime for our 10yr wedding anniversary and my 40th birthday. We were lucky enough to discover and stay at the Royal Chundu Island lodge and it was magical. Their attention to detail was spot on and we wanted for nothing. Upon arrival they provided us we a suggested itinerary, which included touring Victoria Falls, a local village, and camping with a private picnic. We are so happy we said yes to it all. Each night we were taken out for sundowners on the mighty Zambezi and when we got back to our suite, we had a beautiful bubble bath waiting for us. We cannot thank Aggie and the team enough for how special they made our stay. If you have the opportunity to visit Zambia/Victoria Falls, we highly recommend staying at The Royal Chundu. Aggie and team, we cannot wait to visit again and bring friends so they can experience just how amazing y’all are!

We spent a couple of nights at this property and it was amazing. We stayed in one of the four island villas and it felt like we had a private island with full staff to ourselves. Everyone there is fantastic and the food is great. Our tour company had originally booked a tour to the Zambia side of Victoria Falls, but the hotel manager told us the Zimbabwe side was better. She took care of changing the tour and did not charge us anything extra, although the Zimbabwe tour was a more expensive tour. She even bought us sandals to go there, as she forget to tell us to bring ours and I didn't want to go back to the island to get them. I offered to buy a couple of pairs, but she gave our driver money and said to pay for them as she should have advised us in advance. That was way above and beyond any obligation on her part and was greatly appreciated. The views on the Zambezi River from the property are just amazing. Our boat driver Moses was a great guy who was very knowledgeable about the aminals surrounding us on the cruises. I can't say enough about how great this property and the people were. It is a must if you are going to Zambia or Victoria Falls.

We spent 4 nights at Royal Chundu on the Island Lodge and could not have been happier with our stay. Accommodations were luxurious and comfortable. Our deck overlooking the flowing water of the Zambezi was so relaxing and we enjoyed bathing in the outdoor tub. Food was delicious and Chef John was able to accommodate our special diets with ease and creativity. The lodge staff was very friendly, professional and excelled at their jobs in all departments. We particularly enjoyed our evening sunset cruises with Fred whose knowledge of the area’s myriad birds made the experience all the more enchanting. We highly recommend this lodge without reservations of any kind.
