A pleasant hotel in a town that has issues with prostitutes on the corner and lots of homeless who are more aggressive than in other areas of Colombia
We had a small room with a tiny bathroom and a viewof a car park which got a bit noisy from early morning
I did feel unsafe in the town and walking to and from the hotel, the reception was not always staffed so there was no additional security
There is a rooftop bar and restaurant, which was never open in our stay and breakfast was served there and was a basic affair with juice, coffee, eggs and fruit
They set up breakfast from about 6am and are very noisy in moving the furniture/tables etc
Good location just 3 blocks from sea
Wi-fi was sporadic
Staff were lovely and helpful

We enjoyed our time at Santa Marta Real. Close to the historic centre, but without the high prices. Convenient to walk to the beach, restaurants etc.
The room was comfortable and clean and the staff very pleasant and helpful.
A good stay

Based on the reviews I had read on here, I thought the hotel would be bad, but I thought it was well priced and had good value. The rooms were comfortable but not extravagant, and the hotel overall was really clean. I thought the staff was very helpful and friendly. Downsides are that the hotel restaurant was very windy, since it is on the fourth floor on a roofed terrace, so much that sometimes things would blow over, and the hotel is close to undesirable part of Santa Marta.

Oh how I wish I had read the reviews before booking. I wasted a whole day at the beach, which is really the point of going to Santa Marta, because the staff would not take care of my luggage after I checked out at 10 or so. They literally told me that because I had already paid them, they no longer have any obligation to me at all. I guess that's technically true, but any hostel or hotel of any kind will always be kind to their guests even after they have forked over way too much dough for that neighborhood and bland tasteless hotel. Of course, you can't take your luggage or purse with passport to the beach, so I never saw playa blanca. I was so angry it made me cry.
The only helpful staff member was surly and condescending.
The design is completely artless and made to be cost efficient. The liquid soap was maybe 10% soap. I understand skimping a little, but this was kind of too much.
While you are safe in the hotel, and they have a guard at the door, if you venture a block in the wrong direction you could get mugged. The prostitution strip of Santa Marta is two blocks away.
Oh and you really like the view? Well, you'll have that in the morning or any time you are in the hotel restaurant, but most rooms have a view of the neighboring abandoned houses and you will have a front row seat to the daily lives of people who squat in them (usually the roofs are torn down so you see everything).
On the plus side, it's quite clean and the reception and security are always there.

This hotel overcharges for basic rooms with very small bathrooms…It is essentially an over-priced, over-rated dump and is frankly best avoided altogether. The reception/lobby looks very presentable and in fact so does the rest of the hotel on first inspection…However the walls are paper thin and the place has no roof (a terrace on the top floor is covered by a structure that barely resembles one. We stayed here for a night and the next day changed rooms due to constant noise all night from both inside and outside the hotel. The next day we were moved to the only available alternative which was smaller than the room we were originally given when we checked-in and we had another restless night, just as bad as the first. Breakfast was average, service in the hotel was practically non-existent, the ´business centre´ consisted of one PC in a small store room...We had cold water showers each morning/evening and nothing else in the place seemed to work properly. We left our luggage here after two exhausting nights with hardly any sleep to go to Parque Tayrona...When we came back we were informed that we would have to change rooms again. We asked to speak to the Manager but were told that he was ´unavailable´…We eventually left the hotel and found alternative accommodation outside of Santa Marta…I promised myself I would write this review in order to warn other potential guests…Here it is for what its worth - Consider yourself warned.

We were very satisfied with our stay at Santa Marta Real. The location might get a little bit dangerous at late hours, but you can always take a cab just to be safe. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the serve eggs with toast or arepa for breakfast. The terrace is very nice too. The price-benefit is excellent!

I recently stayed here for a few days on a recent trip to Santa Marta. It's a decent hotel if a little expensive for Colombia I thought.

My room was small but comfortable with a king-sized bed and small but clean bathroom. It featured decent black out blinds, a good LCD TV with a few english speaking channels, and an electronic safe with room enough for my laptop. The on-roof terrace where breakfast was served gives a good view of the Santa Marta Skyline. Breakfast was a small buffet but eggs were provided. I didn't try any of the food on offer as I ate out the rest of the day.

Location wise It's one block from the beachfront, and a couple of blocks to the street markets at the back. Unfortunately the area does get a little edgy in the afternoon, with the main crossroads on the way to the beach used by a couple of local drug dealers... so you do have all the undesirable things that come with that... Calle 11 and 10 were worse with quite a few gangs of youths hanging out on the streets. My first night there I saw a couple of police shake-downs where they blocked off the street and a couple of kids getting high in a secluded doorway on cocaine. No trouble came to me and I was able to walk around freely... however I probably wouldn't have felt so confident in doing so if I perhaps felt I couldn't blend in as easily. (One of the street vendors said I shouldn't speak English when I'm on those streets as it would immediately identify me as a gringo)

A very nice hotel - excelent rooms. Clean and tidy. We felt like a part of a big family. The service and food was excelent as well. All personel was highly qualified for their work. The hotel is placed close to the beach, banks and other services in the center of Santa Marta.

What an amazing hotel. Food, staff and the hotel were all amazing. My room was incredibly clean throughout my stay and so was the hotel in general. The coffee was especially mesmerising. The staff were extremely friendly.

This is my first time in Colombia and coming from Canada, I was shocked at the way things work here. It is chaos, noise, garbage, but the hotel gave us a safe, clean and fairly quiet place to stay. The staff are family so they do their best to make sure you get what you need. The food is decent, the chef tries very hard to make tasty dishes. We walked around Santa Marta everyday but I never truly felt safe. You just be on high alert here as a traveller, but you can get around without to much hassle. I noticed in other reviews that they penalized the hotel for the neighbourhood. Every street you turn down can be beautiful or it can be run down, all very quickly. I think that’s just the way things are down there. The hotel itself is a great place considering the surroundings.
