An amazing place to escape the restrictions elsewhere in the region
Simply put it, our stay was perfect. This is the place to escape the COVID-19 restrictions elsewhere this time of the year in Santa Marta. However, we would return to the hotel even when there is no restrictions. It is located in the place of extraordinary beauty, which is important for people like us who value an opportunity to stay in close contact with nature. Besides, the service is of the highest standards possible. All the personnel is making an extra step to satisfy your needs: the chef is making your favorite dishes which are not in menu, the cleaning is spotless, the exclusive pool is set next to the river and looking into ocean, the beach is your own, with other people are those staying in you hotel only. In addition, the design of the hotel is inviting to relax and enjoy the stay in the way, which is rarely found in Colombia, known for its love to loud fiestas 24/7. In other words, if you are looking for rumba and fiesta, this is not the place for you. Otherwise, you will never say sorry that you have chosen this place to spend your vacations.

This was the most beautiful place to stay. We stayed in an ocean view room for five nights and loved it. The room was clean, and sleeping with the fresh air blowing in and the sound of the waves can’t be beat, followed by waking up to the view of the river and ocean...wow. The restaurant took excellent care of us as I have several food allergies. The chef went out of his way to chat with me and created meals that fit my needs. I have never been treated better at a restaurant!!! That chef deserves a raise. The pool area was a tranquil treat surrounded by trees and a chatty macaw. The beach was only a few steps away with no one but hotel guests and a few local fisherman. It felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves most of the times we went. They also have a spa on premises, a bar, and can arrange transportation to the park for you. We will definitely go back!

Simply the best place to relax, embrace nature and to get captivated by the magical mix of beach and jungle in this region of Colombia.

Since our arrival, we felt very welcomed by the staff of the hotel. They advised us of all the places and things to do during our stay. The hotel provides a half board basis offering a good nutritious breakfast and a tasty dinner using the products of the region.

We also had a massage that lasted for 1.5 hours with a reasonable price and top quality. We wish to have another session as it was really worthy.

In terms of the accommodation, the room was spacious and very clean. There is no hot water, although considering the area is very warm, this was not an issue.

This is a place for you to connect with nature, to find your inner peace and to escape from the busting and noisy Santa Marta. If you're looking for a place to party, this might not be your best choice though.

Thank you very much Maloka Barlovento for hosting us and making our stay a special one. We will definitely come back and please keep up with the good service and preserve this magical place.

Muchaa gracias a todo el personal de Maloka Barlovento por su atención y su excelente servicio. Indudablemente volveremos una vez más a este lugar tan hermoso y mágico. 100% recomendado.

My wife and I stayed here for four nights to relax after hiking to the Lost City. This hotel is in a gorgeous spot, overlooking the ocean, river, and mountains. We spent our days beaching and reading and enjoyed every minute. Our room (#1) was on the corner so we had some privacy as well as breezes from and views in two directions.

I give it five stars even though it comes with a few quirks. Our room was comfortable but there was no a/c nor hot water. The a/c we didn’t miss at all because of the breezes and ceiling fan and the water in the shower was not at all cold. Breakfasts (included) and dinners were delicious, but we ran through the menu in our four nights and would have appreciated some lighter choices for lunches (tip: split an entree for lunch). It was also confusing as to whether it was best to ask for a paper menu or order using their app. Finally, you can charge meals, beer, and wine to your room, but mixed drinks and massages must be paid for separately.

We stayed 4 nights in The Suites and we loved it. We had our own private pool that is shared with only 3 other rooms and it's right out of the back of the room. It looks over a lagoon with 3-meter Caimans. Birds and wildlife abound and I saw a 1-meter long Iguana just a few meters away. Fantastic.

Breakfast is included and you can order whatever you want. Eggs, any style, toast, arepas, fruit, crepes, juices, cereal. The coffee is excellent. We ordered and shared most of the lunch and dinner plates (not included, but very reasonably priced). Some of the best food we've had, anywhere. The place is fun, beautiful and the service is excellent. The Caribbean is a 30 meter walk.

We took the two hour walk in Tyrona National Nature Park to "La Piscina", "The Swimming Pool". The hike is moderate in difficulty and well worth it. A breakwater has been made 50 meters from the shore, so the water is calm and swimmable and warm and perfect. The walk takes you up and over a whaleback through the Colombian jungle. Great fun.

Great location, 3 minutes from the beach, although it's not a beach where you lay down and have cocktails, the river discharges a lot of biomass and silt and leaves it on the beaches. Regardless, it's wonderful to walk on and be there and enjoy the scenery.

I knew what I was getting into having read the reviews, for example no hot water, so I was prepared. Staff is wonderful, food and bevarege quite good.

It would have been great if the pool also had the same view as the deck where you view the river and the ocean. I also didn't like that the doors of the the room were basically just window screen, and that the walls are a bit thin, so you can't be too loud.

All in all, a very nice stay with a lot of character.

We stayed here for four nights in the Maloka Suites and cannot rate this place highly enough. First our room was excellent, spacious, well decked out, with a large bathroom. It has S/C and two beds, a little patio, and access to a semi private pool, just for these 4 rooms. The views are lovely, over the lagoon and ocean in the distance.

There is another circular pool that is available to all, higher up, and also lots of green areas where we would sit with our kids.

There is a restaurant and bar, with excellent service and the Chefs are really Osgood- the food is first rate, and delicious.

It is really nice to sit on the deck at sunset having a cocktail, drinking in the colours - sunsets here are some of the best we have seen.

The owners have paid special attention to the selection of staff. They were such k has fruits, eggs , areas, yoghurt, caijaja, hot chocolate etc. You will not need lunch after this.

Highly recommended, and we will be back.

Stayed 2 nights at the Maloka of Finca Barlavento.
It´s situated on a hill high above the mouth of a river with phantastic and breathtaking views of Tayrona NP & Los Naranjos beach.
It´s just a 5min walk down to Los Naranjos beach, but swimming is not a good idea there because of dangerous currents. What a pity in one of the hottest parts of Colombia
This brings us to the only con of Finca Barlavento- they don´t have a pool.
This was the reason why after 2 nights we changed to the nearby Villa Playa Los Naranjos- they have a pool.
But back to Finca Barlavento. Rooms are large & airy, service staff is friendly, but not exceedingly obliging, breakfast & dinner were o.k..
All in all it was a nice experience & we liked it.

It is dark. There is an electric storm and torrential rain. The gate to the property is locked shut and the security guard insists there is no room at the inn. My reservation (made several months ago) doesn't exist. Calls are made to the front desk. Calls are made to my tour company. The Finca insists through the security guard's walkie talkie that there is NO reservation. They won't let me in to talk. I'm left with my driver and guide in the down pour, driving in loops around the area looking for somewhere (anywhere) that might have a room. This was a depressing and unpleasant experience.

It takes so long to look for a room (1.5 hours) that my tour company makes several calls, trying to confirm the details, payment and confirmation of the reservation. With great reluctance the Finca admits that they have booked the room not under my name, but the name of my tour company's manager. Two hours late and I am finally allowed through the security gate to check in. So entrenched is the Finca's booking mistake, that they call me by my tour manager's name for the duration of my stay.

There is no apology, no acknowledgment of their cock up. I am so glad that I arrived with such a patient driver, who stayed with me until the error was resolved. If a taxi had simply left me at the gate, I would have felt very unsafe.

This is a nice spot, with perhaps too many buildings now crammed into the available lot of land. It is very rustic (cold water only, no windows only mesh shutters). Rooms are dark with very weak lighting. The food is good, (Caribbean seafood) maybe the best thing about the hotel. I wouldn't trust the management though. Desperately poor performance. They should be ashamed. Missing in action.

The staff are pleasant, the views are beautiful as is the setting. The design is very poor and the facilities are insufficient for the number of people. There is no outside wall on the rooms just netting which means if you are at the front with the sea view there is nothing to stop the noise from the restaurant and balcony. You have to rely on people’s consideration which does not always work. A request to change room was pushed into touch and ignored.

You can email the hotel directly to set up transportation, or take a bus for tourists- your hotel in Santa Marta can help you set it up or you can reserve it online. Or you can take a regular taxi or a bus- just tell them you’re headed to Finca Barlovento

We did not drink tap water in Santa Marta. Bottled water is easy to access everywhere, and most restaurants serve filtered or bottled water.
