This is truly a gracious, splendid, luxurious, lovely, and special hotel. We arrived here hot and tired after a drive from our last location, during which we’d experienced a ghastly disappointing hotel stay, so we were a bit wary to see what we would find. We were not at all disappointed but were completely and totally happy and appreciative of every feature of the Bastion. It is built into the fortified walls of the old city of Zadar, with a very private restaurant garden and water views in a quiet corner of the island yet with immediate walking access to all that Zadar offers. It is lovingly and beautifully restored. The staff is completely professional yet friendly. The hotel has quite a celebrity history (see framed photos by elevator). The breakfast is spare but very high quality and the staff happily made my husband his fromage et jambon omelette very well each morning. Our suite was beautifully and classically furnished, and very comfortable, although the lighting was a little dark. The air conditioning worked very well. Parking was onsite and having a small car is preferable for ease of maneuvering. There is not a gym or fitness room per se, just a treadmill and a rower on a sort of shelf area by the spa (no ventilation, no privacy, no room to put anything). We would happily stay here again. For dinner, we did not eat at the hotel but found a wonderful place with a terrible name: “Eat Me” restaurant and wine bar about a 5 – 10 min walk from the hotel in the center of the old town

This review is way overdue. We apologize for that. We stayed at this wonderful Hotel Bastion in late September 2019. We had a spectacular time at this hotel and loved every moment of our stay there. The hotel is beautifully decorated and very well maintained. We loved the room we booked. Very clean linens and gorgeous décor with a great view of the bay. The outside patio is a must. We spent a lot of time there.

The best part of our stay at the hotel was the team who worked there. They were amazing. They were extremely friendly and always eager to help with everything. On our first evening in Zadar it was raining and we were heading out to dinner, so after a drink and app at the bar we grabbed an umbrella to head to the restaurant they recommended and made reservation for us. We were going to walk over and we were chatting with a couple of the guys asking directions because everything is very close in this lovely town of Zadar and as we were chatting, one of them offered to drive us to the restaurant. We knew him from taking care of us in the restaurant and the bar. It was such an incredible gesture. I mean, when does that ever happen! He dropped us off and we had an incredible meal at the recommended restaurant. Also, Mario who was one of their concierges helped with all the car bookings for us which turned out great. The hotels entire team was top notch, friendly and extremely professional. We spent time every evening before heading out and about for dinner either at their bar or on the patio for a bit of food and drink and we came back after our dinners out to wind down for the evening. I wish I wrote down the names of these incredible staff members because they were outstanding. All members of their team tended to our every need (i.e., restaurant recommendations/reservations, shopping areas, directions, etc.) and were extremely pleasant at all times. Every day we were there we did eat/drink some sort of meal at the hotel (i.e. breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, etc. We honestly can’t say enough about the hotel, it is fantastic. There is no doubt we will go back to Hotel Bastion the next visit to Zadar and we highly recommend it!! We loved Zadar and absolutely plan to be back there and the hotel. Thank you so much for everything Hotel Bastion! All the best, George & Donna from New York

On every trip we try to find at least one R & C hotel and were thrilled to find this, especially with its very reasonable cost. Directions to hotel were easy; a bit confusing as far as which driveway to take for secure parking (it is the second one, which is just past the hotel). Once there, we just parked on the otherwise closed street. Brisk service at the desk by a very personable receptionist (who BTW is an identical twin, which explains why it seemed that he was there 24/7!). The room was spotless, with a nice view of the river, a/c, clean, second floor, both stairs and elevator service. My wife ate breakfast and it was terrific; unfortunately we'd already shot our budget on a 5 star dinner in Dubrovnik so we didn't sample their Michelin rated restaurant. We were going to Plitvice lakes from Zadar and the recommendations about the lakes sort of suggested it was really isolated so we were looking for food to bring; it was Easter Monday and everything was closed so the staff of the dining room where my wife had breakfast were wonderful about supplying us with plenty of food for our excursion. Plenty of hot water in the bathroom. In room fridge and safe. Top notch, excellent location. You are literally across from the ferries, 2 minute walk to the Sea Organ and Salute to the Sun and the entirety of downtown Zadar.

The hotel is situated in a great location , with all local attractions and the sea easily reached . Unfortunately we booked a suite which we found to be directly opposite a night club with very loud booming beating music . The hotel staff said they had complained to the council and had managed to have it turned down from Midnight to 2a.m when it closed . Not the hotels fault and the staff were lovely but would suggest anyone staying here to request a room at the back of the hotel .
The breakfast was mediocre compared to all the others we had in Croatia. On. Both days the poached eggs were very over cooked and the coffee machine often didn’t work . Rather a limited selection of other items. We didn’t have other meals at the hotel as seemed over priced compared to the numerous other restaurants in the area, also no one ever seemed to be eating there which meant no atmosphere.
The suite itself was lovely and the staff very professional

Bastion is one of the few 4 star hotels in Zadar and it is really well located. The Main Street can be accessed in minutes, there are shops nearby and the main area for boat trips is quite nearby.

I arrived late and was given my room, I was hoping for a late check out until 2pm but was told very clearly that they are simply fully booked. As a result of this they can pretty much charge what they want in the summer season.

The room was spacious, two single beds pushed together with different mattress qualities. It really lacked natural light but at least had a high ceiling.

Breakfast was included in their quite dingy restaurant. Service wasn't always great. I ordered eggs one morning which never arrived and had to submit my order again. Things were eventually replaced when they ran out.

The lobby area is small and all the photos of the hotel give a vibe that it is much bigger than it really is. Don't get me wrong, it is a nice hotel, for me it was probably a little over priced but then you are really paying for the location.

We spent a beautiful week at the Hotel Bastion, Zadar. It was our first visit to Croatia and to a Relais & Chateaux hotel. The hotel is situated just inside the ramparts of the Old Town offering a lovely view over the port area and is close to the historic centre of Zadar, a beautiful and interesting Roman city. The airport bus stops just below the hotel by the waterside (Stop: Zadar city center-Poluotok) which was very convenient. We had a most comfortable bedroom with a view over the water and we woke each morning to the sound of church bells. It was delightful! Breakfast each morning was varied, delicious, and elegantly served. We were made to feel most welcome by all of the staff we encountered. A huge thank you, therefore, to Jelka, Mario, Marina, and the breakfast team for looking after us so well. We would highly recommend Hotel Bastion to anyone thinking of visiting Zadar.

Hotel Bastion in Zadar is well located in walking distance from the old town and port. The bed was very good and firm in my standard double room. However, there were a couple of shortcomings: The in-room safe was loose, i.e. not fixed to anything. The bathroom had very little space for personal items. The TV had one English language news channel which worked, CGTV, a Chinese channel. Other English language news channels were not working (all with “snow” and not audible). I complained about this twice, but in vain. Breakfast was average and service not attentive. I booked directly on the hotel’s website. It was not value for money.

We stopped here as part of my birthday vacation and my birthday just happened to fall during our stay. My mom mentioned to Ivan, the desk clerk, the night before and not only did he sing "Happy Birthday" the next morning, but we also found complimentary sparkling wine in our room later that day. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The staff at the front desk even helped us book a COVID-19 test appointment where the guy came to the hotel to conduct the procedure. Our room was gorgeous, I should have taken pictures. I hope we get a chance to go back soon.

Historic hotel. Nice room but quite small. Not the same emphasis on wearing masks as other hotels we stayed in and cleaning staff didn’t wear masks although reception staff did. Breakfast was good the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Food was ok but expensive for what it was.

The hotel was perfect for our trip to Zadar. We explored the old town and really enjoyed the waterfront in the evening with beautiful sunsets, the “sea organ” and the light show. Everyone was so nice and welcoming to us during our stay.

The only problem was finding the hotel. The street in the front of the hotel is only accessible by the hotel staff. There is only a very small sign in the parking area that lets you know you have arrived. GPS leads you to the parking but the signage could be improved. I suggest you call the hotel when you get in the area and the can direct you to the proper parking area.

The staff of the hotel was very friendly and accommodating to our needs and even invited us to join them in watching a football match Croatia vs Spain.

Limits parking is available for free. We happened to be there in low season but I have no idea what they do to accommodate all their guests during high season, as parking seemed to be a bit limited.
