Travellers' Choice
No picture of Machu Picchu can prepare you for seeing it with your own eyes. Perched high in the Andes, it is one of few places in the world that can be described as truly unmissable. It’s on everyone’s travel wish list, attracting a million visitors each year. But there’s only one way to see it in style: by staying at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. When we say we’re one of a kind, we mean it. Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel that sits at the entrance of the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. For years we have been the unofficial gateway to the Inca world, inviting our guests to explore with unrivalled access and expert guidance. While most visitors to the citadel endure a winding bus ride from Aguas Calientes, our snug retreat is a few footsteps away. Wake before sunrise and be the first through the gates. The mountains look magnificent emerging from a thick cloak of mist, and Machu Picchu is stunning in solitude. Stop, breathe and soak it all in.

We hiked in to Machu Picchu in the afternoon and the Sanctuary Lodge was the ideal location to end the hike without having to take a bus back and forth to town for our next day at the site. The rooms are small and very basic and the price is really only justified by the location. That said, the location is magical and the service was very good for the most part. We enjoyed relaxing on our patio in the evening and the ability to come back to our room to change after a morning hike. However, we had a few service issues that should be addressed. We asked the hotel to hold our bags for the Belmond train in the evening as they did not offer a late checkout. After returning from touring Machu Picchu, we found out that the hotel had sent our bags to the train so we had nothing to change into, etc. The hotel was apologetic but that was unacceptable. In addition, breakfast is only offered for a short window and is not timed to early morning hikes as per the Machu Picchu mountain schedule. The hotel was not able to offer us anything before or after our hike even though this is included in the rate. Even a simple pastry and coffee would have been appreciated. Overall, you are paying for the location here and it was worth it for us for one night. Any longer and I would recommend staying in town.

I know the hotel is mad expensive, but had such an amazing stay that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. It really is right next door to Machu Picchu! We had full board, our luggage was taken care of and even after we had checked out, we were still able to use the facilities. This was an absolute godsend when we got completely drenched hiking Wayne Picchu as we could go in, have a hot shower and then a slap up lunch afterwards.

I stayed one night at the Sanctuary Lodge. I tend to be about location, and found the lodge to definitely be worth it. The setting is incredible. The rooms are nice, albeit small, many with private outdoor terraces. All 3 meals are included and are delicious, as well as an excellent Pisco tasting before dinner. But, importantly, the service is above and beyond outstanding. The location makes entry to Machu Picchu on 2 different days super easy. While my afternoon entry on the first day was great, being first in line for the 6:00 entry on the 2nd day, and in the site with only a handful of people with the sun rising over the mountaintops and onto the citadel was amazing.

Perfect location if you are hiking and touring the mountain Incan city of Machu Picchu for more than one day. You are literally right at the entrance to Machu Picchu. Our room for the night had a patio where we could enjoy a drink and watch the evening come after a day at Machu Picchu. Not a large room, but plenty big enough. Food and service in the restaurant was very good if a little on the slow side. But, you are in no way rushed. The staff is very friendly and helpful with the answer always being “yes”. Enjoyed a Pisco tasting at the bar the evening we arrived as well. Not inexpensive, but for a night a great location and value all things considered.
