At the very start of my holiday in Beijing for August 2012 I went hunting for a hotel. I went to Starway Tuanjiehu Hotel to ask for a viewing of a guest bedroom and to enquire about booking a room for my holiday but there was an electricity cut for at least a whole section of the Starway Tuanjiehu Hotel so staff at reception said that it was not possible for me to view a guest bedroom (no corridor lights, no bedroom lights!!!) as the way that the hotel obtained its electricity- it was… all tied up with the local enterprises/ buildings of that street and workmen had been refurbishing/ constructing something in a very nearby building (it might have been the kindergarten) but accidentally damaged some kind of an electricity cable in the process - that resulted in the power cut. The reception staff told me that the power cut would probably carry on for the rest of that day and could not tell me when electricity was going to be available again. The hotel staff did not particularly seem to enjoy working there in their/ her not very happy mode of speaking about the hotel… so I expect the hotel staff to care about providing service to its guests less than some other hotels in town that cost the same kind of money. And – my god – this hotel, Starway Tuanjiehu Hotel, was a right nightmare to get to in a taxi, even though I’m totally fluent in Mandarin Chinese and I even gave the taxi driver the full Chinese address of the hotel as well as this hotel’s complete Chinese name. I was not in a hurry that day and did not give the taxi driver a hard time, but he drove to that area first then he kept on getting out of the taxi to ask the people of that local area about where the Starway Tuanjiehu Hotel was 4 – 5 times! And it was very unusual for a taxi passenger in Beijing to be so relaxed about that taxi driver doing that, as most Beijing taxi passengers would have been yelling and screaming at that taxi driver saying what’s wrong with you being so pathetic blah blah… well… … I am not from Beijing, that’s the thing! The taxi driver had to drop me off at the point of entry of some kind of a local area and I had to walk on 2 long streets before I stepped upon the entrance of the Starway Tuanjiehu Hotel. Vehicles such as cars were banned from going straight to the door of that hotel, I was told, at most they could get to that entry point 2 long streets away from the hotel. And on the street that the hotel was on, I definitely did not see any cars, mini-vans or suchlike. This was surprising to me, I don’t get it, how about hotel guests with multiple bags for their trips, especially – any heavy items?!??? How can a hotel be situated at a spot that does not allow vehicles except things such as bicycles?! That is so strange, but that was what I got told. If you stay at the Starway Tuanjiehu Hotel I just have no idea how you are going to get back as a hotel guest at the end of a day of sightseeing/ travelling around town/ your business conferences, considering that it’s such an absolute nightmare for a Beijing taxi driver to eventually find the hotel (not really 'found', it’s not like he drove me to the door, he basically dropped me off elsewhere and pointed fingers at where I should walk to!)

We booked 2 rooms in this hotel mainly because of the location being central and near a metro station and the price being very good. Getting there with taxi was quite hard, although I showed the taxi driver the name of the hotel in Chinese and the location on the map he managed to get lost, then he called to the hotel to get direction. The hotel is located in a residential street so most of the taxi drivers wouldn't find it. The 2 rooms we got wasn't in the same level. One of them was much better than the other so there is a chance you'll get either. Both rooms were nice and clean but a bit small. The main different was in the shower room. The help desk didn't understand English like other places in China and had an internet computer there (no wifi in the hotel). Our main problem with the hotel was in regard to their so called offer for airport shuttle. When we checked in they told us that there is an airport shuttle we can book but when we came the next day to book it they say that there is no airport shuttle and they can't even book us a taxi (we planned to leave at 4:30 am so we wanted to make sure we'll have a taxi). After a long discussion with the help desk (using google translate) they still didn't help us by booking a taxi just saying that we should go to the main road and catch a taxi there. It was 600 meters in the rain with 2 children and luggage to get there so keep it in mind if you choose this hotel. Other than that it's good value for your money.

I got the hotel through an acquaintance. The front desk service was so good. Even though they can't speak English, they tried to communicate with me through google translate. That was so sweet. The room is clean but needs major maintenance. The bed is not comfortable. The toilet need to be fixed, cause it is old. The side lamp doesn't work. Anyways, it is not recommended for business travelers.

Pro: Location - Close to MRT Tuanjiehu station. about 5 min. walk. To Sanlitun bar area about 15 min. -20 min walk. You can take buses also to center area./ Free internet / Tea bags, electric kettle, TV, desposable slippers/ Very clean and comfortable / Bigger room and desk (like US hotels) Con: One of the receptionist girls was not very friendly. The check in process took a while.. They make a copy of your passport. / The location very hard to find at first. From the subway station, you take an exit at SE corner, then go straight a little bit (100m?) take the first gate on your right. It is an enterance to the condo (or apt) complex but just go straight about 200m-300m(?) and you see the hotel on your left. Its very close. Note: They ask a key deposit of 100 yuan. They will not clean your room unless you put the clean request tag on a doornob.

I booked the suite for a last-minute hotel reservation. It was difficult to book the hotel through phone because the telephone agent could not understand english. The suite is a cramped room. Since we really could get only one room, we decided to get one extra bed. The linens are ok but the extra bed's frame was suspicious. Good thing my companion's not overweight or else it wouldn't hold up. The receptionist were not very fluent in english but they were extremely helpful. They booked our tour to the Great Wall on the same night we checked-in the hotel. They are the true pride of this hotel indeed! The restaurant is only open until 9pm and finding a reliable restaurant nearby is challenging because these establishments beside the hotel are not clean at all. Over-all the hotel is so-so but I am really really satisfied with the hotel staff!!!

Booked this hotel through 'Rates to Go'. Hotel would not recognise the payment already paid to rates to go and I ended up paying the full amount to the hotel. The hotel also had no intention of giving me the room at the reduced price advertised on the Rates To Go Website. Stayed there for one night out of the reserved three nights. Couldn't eat breakfast even though it was advertised as being a continental breakfast. Very hard for the taxis to find. Without a hotel card it is a waste of time and money. For the sake of another $10 you can stay in a decent Chinese Hotel in a decent location.

I live near Beijing and stayed here for one night before catching an international flight. I booked a single room for a very good price on “elong.” The hotel is located on a peaceful alleyway near apartments, a school and a hospital. The room was small and basic, but clean with free internet (and a computer in the lobby). I had dinner at the hotel restaurant - very reasonable and tasty home-style Chinese food. The hotel is close to the Sanlitun embassy area – bars, restaurants and shopping at Yaxiu. The airport is less than a half hour away. My only complaint is that the hotel was hard to find! From Beijing train station take the subway to Dongsi shi tiao, hail a taxi heading east, then call the hotel and have them tell the driver how to get there.

Stayed here for two nights after booking online at elong.net for 278RMB a night. The rooms are basic and maybe a little on the small side for some, but clean, comfortable and don't reek of cigerettes like so many budget places in Beijing (or China for that matter). The hotel offers free high speed internet in every room if you bring your laptop, and there's a workstation in the lobby if you haven't. The hotel is probably hard to find if you are unfamiliar with Beijing (located on a small street/alley off the 3rd Ring Road near the Changhong Bridge), so make sure you get good directions (elong also provides a mapping feature in Chinese which could be handy for printing out and showing a taxi driver). The neighborhood is tucked away but still a little lively, with a few local eatries, and a KFC and McDonalds not too far away. You can also book the hotel through Super 8's website. I would definately stay here again.
