Welcome to Angama, inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’. Located high above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara is a remarkable owner-run safari lodge overlooking Kenya’s Maasai Mara, considered by many as the loveliest game reserve on the continent. Here guests will find a lodge where everything is as it ought to be: two intimate camps of just fifteen tented suites each, a private airfield and access to the Mara below, tailor-made safari days and a famously warm Kenyan welcome.
Very fabolous weekend get out,Reserve experience at its best.Best service at fair prices.Juicy food in all cultures and varieties. Strategically located for the reserve experience intended.Would recommend to every one visiting Mara

It is hard to find words to convey the beauty of Angama Mara. High up on the escarpment overlooking the Mara, the views are just incredible. Add to that the warmth of welcome and care from all of the Angama staff, slick modern dining spaces, beautiful luxury tented rooms, amazing food and all the delights of the Mara on the doorstep, it really is a taste of heaven on earth. The highlights for us were the game drives with Tito, who has an incredible knowledge and passion for the natural world all around. We also enjoyed our walk with Leshan, and saw round the Shamba, a wonderful kitchen garden which forms the basis of chef Evans’ delicious cuisine. We were beautifully looked after by our ‘butler’ Terry all week. All in all, it was just an unforgettable week. We very much hope to return.…

Response from Steve Mitchell, Owner at Angama Mara
Responded 20 Feb 2022
Dear Helen, Thank you for staying with us recently, I’m delighted that you managed to experience so much of what Angama has to offer. So often our guests rush in and out on a multi-property itinerary, and miss the chance to really take in all that the Mara has to offer. I have passed on your feedback to Tito, Leshan, Evans & Terry – and they are all pleased as punch. Please come back soon, Best, Steve

We finished a 5 night stay at Angama Mara a couple days ago and can’t stop thinking about it. And I don’t think we ever will, either. What a magical place! The game drives, walking safari, hot air balloon ride, sundowners with the Maasai, night BBQ, in-room massage, as well as the garden and ‘Out of Africa’ picnics were all simply incredible experiences. We lucked out and saw the ‘Big 5’ within our first 24 hours — simply amazing. The property is beautiful; upon arrival, looking out at the Mara for the first time, it took our breath away (we maybe even shed a tear or two). The room was beautifully appointed, and I found myself waking up early each morning just to watch the sunset from bed with a freshly brewed cup of coffee made with the in-room French press. But what makes Angama Mara so special is the staff who make you feel like you’re a part of their family. It’s only been a couple days and we miss them so! Hospitality at its finest, no doubt about it — I don’t think we heard a ‘no’ or ‘sorry’ from anyone on staff the entire time. They attend to and accommodate your every need. Special thanks to our butler Farida, guide Robert, and the camp manager Josephat who I can’t speak highly enough about. We might go back just to see them!…

Stayed at Angama Mara for one night and really enjoyed the stay. The view, oh what a view! Equally satisfying on the eyes from the dining area and the tented bedroom. The dining options were delicious, especially the breakfast setup for me. We did hear the tree hyrax or other animals on the rooftop and windows during the night, definitely felt very close! 🤭 Though it felt a little scary especially with the heavy rains, it was a part of the experience. The heated bed was also a nice touch after a long game drive and a DARK / rainy walk back from dinner. We also enjoyed the view from both the pool and gym facility room. I took advantage of the treadmill and thoroughly enjoyed zoning out, while stretching my legs. Additionally, we really enjoyed the map room and gift shop, only wish we had more time here to thoroughly enjoy the amenities. We did the Shamba lunch and that was a really fun experience, touring the garden and then having lunch isolated from the main property, made for a really special touch. The game drive was such an amazing experience with Johnnie, he took us to find elephants, a shy rhino and attempted to find a mama lion & cubs, but they were not active when we went. We got lucky with a double rainbow during our drive, which made the experience so much more magical. Johnnie also made sure that we made it back out the park and up the hill to Angama before the sky opened with heavy rains.…

This review is for our guide, Jeremy. We got so lucky to have Jeremy as our guide for our honeymoon - he is personable, professional, patient, polite, and is incredibly good at his job. You can truly feel his love for what he does - that drastically improves the experience in his car. He has a great sense for people and is very relatable and just a great person to spend time with. He has all the facts to recite about the animals, but what is most interesting is his ability to tell compelling stories about the animals and his experiences with them which is very engaging. In addition, he knows the terrain and animals so well that he is able to make strongly educated guesses about what an animal might do given weather, time of day, knowledge about that specific animal, etc. He routinely positioned the car in a way that wasn't right with the others, but where the animal ended up going towards. He is very well connected with the other guides and rangers which helps give him a sense for where to go to look for specifics, even though nothing is guaranteed in nature. Jeremy is also an accomplished photographer, which is even more helpful for those who are looking to get great shots as he understands positioning, light, framing, etc. I would highly highly recommend requesting Jeremy as your guide if you are able to on a visit to Angama. He made our trip truly special. Don't forget to tip him well too!…

This place is incredibly special. Our group of 4 ladies visited over the summer and had a wonderful time. The property is exceptional, as are the views. We enjoyed every aspect of our stay, but our favorite part was the people. The staff go above and beyond to make the entire experience extraordinary. We made such special memories and I can't wait to bring my family and kids back for another visit. Thank you, Angama Mara!

Where to begin? My Husband and I found ourselves out of words to describe how amazing our stay at Angama Mara was. It was truly the most amazing trip we have ever been on. Especially thanks to the staff! We just kept saying we couldn’t believe what we were experiencing. We booked a signature stay which included a hot air balloon ride, massages, an Out of Africa lunch & private safari guide and couldn’t have been happier. Our butler was Kimani, he was attentive, fun to be around and incredibly thoughtful. Kimani made our stay so magical, one night, he surprised us with a private traditional Kenyan dinner outside of the Safari camp tents. There was a fire, dessert, and then we were able to experience the safari tents for a night. It felt like a vacation within a vacation. I was convinced that Kimani was trying to plump us up on vacation with all the food he spoiled us with. We opted for a private safari vehicle and Jackson was our safari guide and he was AMAZING. He was so knowledgeable about all the animals in the Mara and shared so much information with us, during our drives. He was patient, and has an eye like a hawk. We were so fortunate to see the big 5 during our trip, some things multiple times. Many people did a drive in the morning for a few hours, came back for lunch and then went out again for a few hours in the evening. We loved our drives with Jackson so much, that we often stayed out the full day 7:30-3:30/4), opting to have a very late lunch. It was so worth it with all that we saw! Nasiti was our Tent Steward and also incredibly attentive to details. Every time we came back to the room, it had been tidied up and the mini bar was restocked. He did our laundry daily, sometimes without even asking. Jospehat was our main host as well, and made it all happen behind the scenes and everything operated so smoothly. I don’t know how he does it! There is also a photo studio on site as well. We decided to rent a camera for the duration of our trip, since we were worried about the weight limit for the plane. It was reasonably priced AND they helped edit some photos for you. And the end of your rental, they provide a flash drive with all the raw images. That was another very unique experience. When it came time to leave, I was truly sad. We had stayed 5 nights and everyone made such an impression on us, it felt like we’d been there for a month (in a good way), but also passed way too quickly. We cant say enough good things about Angama Mara. It was truly a magical place to be. The staff were so so wonderful and of course the resort was gorgeous. If 10 stars was an option, that’s what we’d give it.…

This is our second time at Angama Mara. We loved it so much we had to come back. It is luxury beyond luxury in the bush. But more than that - it is exceptional 5 star service like what you would find at any luxury hotel. The tents, if you can call them that, have a desk with all the charging stations you could want, a sitting area, large soaking bathtub, large shower, closet area and gorgeous outdoor deck with table and chairs overlooking an expanse that is hard to describe. Terry in the main lodge is amazing. She took care of our every need with warmth and a smile. We adored her. Violet was our housekeeper and we so appreciated all of the extra touches she provides. Sammy was our driver. One of the best we have had and we have been on quite a few safaris. Not only could he find the animals, he is an astute observer of animal behavior, able to accurately predict where animals were going to be moving or what they would do. He knew the name of every plant, bird and animal we encountered. Sammy was not only a wonderful guide but also an amazing person. We felt we had found a friend. We cannot recommend Angama Mara more highly. They have a wonderful foundation that supports the local community and clinic that we will help support. We will be returning again next year. …

We recently completed a four-night stay at Angama Mara. I’ll try not to repeat the many other totally accurate reviews about the amazing nature of this experience other than to say it is five-star in all respects. The “tents” are simply furnished but clean and modern and the views are unsurpassed. To lay in bed at night under the brilliant light of the clear night sky was just one unforgettable element of our stay. Terry in the main lodge was outstanding in tending to all our food and beverage needs. We spent as much time as we possibly could on drives in the park, leaving at 6:00 AM and staying out most of the day. The lodge packed excellent picnic breakfasts and lunches to eat out in the bush. Tito was our guide and he could not have been more skilled, professional or accommodating. Every morning he asked “what do you want to see today?” and then he’d drive to locations in the park and find what we asked for. He took us to the most jaw-dropping sights: river-crossing wildebeests, mating lions, mother elephants bathing their calves and a leopard’s live kill of a wildebeest. Tito took us completely off the beaten track (no other jeeps around) to sight two cheetahs relaxing after eating a zebra. We focused on the lions and he took us to see several of the different prides and explained the family structure and interrelationship. Tito is also an excellent wildlife photographer and helped us get the most memorable photos with our phones. It was beyond what I dreamed it would be. I will always cherish the beauty of Angama Mara, the kindness of the staff and the incredible experiences driving in the Mara Reserve.…

Response from Steve Mitchell, Owner at Angama Mara

Dear More_2_See, Thank you for your lovely review, that I have shared with the team for all to enjoy - and appreciate just how much you appreciated Tito's guiding and Terry's service. Packing as much time as possible onto game drives in the park is not uncommon for some our guests, while others do prefer to take it easier and spend more time enjoying the lodge's facilities. Nevertheless, there is something for everyone, and in our years of operating, the Mara Triangle itself rarely disappoints - Chanel gameviewing all year-round, and surely a benchmark on the continent. We hope to welcome you back. Very best, Steve

Wow where to even begin…. We had the most incredible time at Angama for part of our honeymoon. From the moment we were picked up at the airstrip to the second we left on our plane, the service, hospitality, and every little detail of our trip far exceeded any of our wildest dreams or expectations. Truly the best trip we have ever been on, and my husband and I are pretty seasoned travelers that enjoy nice amenities while on vacation- which is a sentiment to this statement. Our guide Jackson- or as we called him “action Jackson”- was incredible. We saw the big 5 within a couple days, and we lucked out and saw a live leopard kill. Jackson was so knowledgeable, fun, and he made our many game drives so memorable we feel extremely lucky to have had him. We had previously been on a safari in Kruger and Jackson truly put that experience to shame. We always had the best time with him, you would be lucky to end up with Jackson as your guide! We plan to come back and will request Jackson for more rides! Andrew our server/butler- wow we loved you. Andrew was so special to us he figured out our routine, knew what we liked, made special dinner and lunches for us while at angama & he truly just went above and beyond every single meal. We honestly were speechless how good he was to us. He even brought us coffee and biscuits before our hot air balloon ride at 445 AM. We plan to come visit him at the new location when it opens, that is how incredible and amazing Andrew was! Simply the best! Someone give him a bonus or raise because he was amazing. Overall, the entire team at angama- Jackson, Andrew, George & everyone else we truly loved our experience and you all made it one of a kind. We will be back and we cannot wait to visit the new location! Angama has something special- it isn’t just the views, hospitality, incredible food, amazing game drives, but the people here are what make this place different from any other “safari experience”. Come here, you’ll be so happy you did and already be planning your next trip back. Xx Allyson&Adam…

Dear Allyson & Adam, Wow, what lovely feedback to read - and all the more heartening to hear of how you loved Andrew, a new member of the team who is now firmly establishing himself at our new camp in Amboseli - noted on the increase! Your review really hits the nail on the head for so many reasons, why we just love the Maasai Mara, and all the things which we focus on to ensure that our guests' stays are memorable. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of caring for you both on your honeymoon, and we hope to welcome you both back to Kenya soon. Best, Steve
