I stayed two nights at Gigiri Homestead while on business at the nearby UN Compound at Gigiri. A torch is useful for the occasional power cut (I had one which fortunately did not last long; and the torch is useful if you walk out at night (see below). The Homestead itself is well-guarded and secure and in a suburb of Nairobi where plenty of police and guards patrol. The two big advantages of staying here is that (a) it is in walkable distance from the many agencies represented at Gigiri, thereby missing the horrendous traffic jams getting there from the city; and (b) it is small, quiet and friendly enabling anyone who has to work into the evening to be productive. I need to mention that the Gigiri Homestead moved in early October to a new site and rather larger building slightly further from Gigiri (hence a longer walk) along a very rutted dirt road which can be daunting at night if walking. There is also no signage to indicate the guesthouse; and so until you get your bearings you really do have to get there by taxi. The move has also created a few hiccups. In the room I had (#4); the plumbing is somewhat haphazard and it took me some time to work out that the cold tap is actually the hot; and vice versa. That said, once the hot water arrives, you get a good shower. The cupboards (there are plenty of them) were not as clean as I would have liked and the floor was a bit dusty. But the bed linen was beautifully white and ironed, and the bed itself very comfortable. It was good to have a dedicated desk at which to work. The lighting is good and I could easily read in bed. As others have commented, the staff are so helpful and willing, although they did not always understand me (my hot poached eggs I ordered for the first breakfast turned out to be cold fried ones). The evening food for dinner has been praised by others; my experience was not quite so happy. I ordered fried fish, but it was grossly overcooked and hard; the roast potatoes and red cabbage were good but not quite as warm as they should have been. I didn’t have the heart to complain because the staff are so smiley and willing. But be careful – I am told the curries are much better. Maybe next time – and there will be, I am sure – I will pre-order a fish curry. Otherwise the Gigiri Homestead is so very different from staying in a faceless modern hotel; it is slightly quirky but very friendly with a secure atmosphere. It is almost like staying in a private home.

Nice gardens, comfortable rooms and decent home-style cooking, friendly service for an excellent price. If you want a pool, restaurant, bar, 24 front desk, etc. this may not be your place, but it certainly worked for me. Not all rooms have attached and non-shared bath, so call and make sure in advance.

I stayed at Gigiri Homestead for a week in Nairobi while travelling there for a non-profit, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. The homestead itself has a wonderful bright, cottage feel, the garden is beautiful and peaceful. The area is very safe, secure and close to the Village Market for food, supplies and shopping. Bedrooms and bathrooms were extremely clean (and I don't take cleanliness lightly). The staff were among the nicest, warmest people I've come across in all of my travels. They went above and beyond to make sure we were ok, well fed (and had our shoes, when we accidentally left them behind while packing up on our last day.) They were amazing and we enjoyed our dinners-in chatting with them and learning about their lives and Kenyan politics and cultures from them, firsthand.
I had a wonderful stay here. I've have travelled to many different countries and stayed in a variety of homesteads, cottages and B&Bs and this was by far my favourite. I'd highly recommend it for anyone traveling to Nairobi.

This review is long overdue and one of the reasons why I have become a member at TripAdvisor. We stayed at the Gigiri homestead in October 2010 and as a former Nairobi resident, I was pleasantly surprised by this place. If you really want to experience how wellheeled Nairobi residents live, than you could do no better than to stay at this lovely and pleasant homestay in the outlying suburb of Gigiri (close to the UNEP headquarters). The house itself is a typical Nairobi house built in the traditional colonial style and decorated with a an African touch with a pleasant garden surrounding it. After the heat and the dust of travelling through Nairobi traffic, this was a peaceful oasis to escape to. We never met the efficient Martha but were warmly welcomed by the charming and efficient Stella instead. Nothing was too much of a problem for her-from sorting out taxis to cooking us breakfasts at 6am. The bedrooms with the bathrooms are clean and well furnished and the whole experience was relaxed and informal but with every important detail taken care of. Martha and Stella know a thing or two about hospitality. Try this place if you want a real Nairobi experience.

having travelled various destinations in the African continent and i would pretty much say that i haven't had quite a warm welcome as the one i got while staying at the homestead.the staff are quick on their feet and willing to meet your needs inorder to ensure one's comfort during the visit.the meals are prepared on request and are exemplaryand am glad that when i was ready to eat, my meal wasn't delayed nor was it cold. the rooms are cosy with an extra blanket for chilly weather which is a norm.the bathrooms are impresively clean with hot water and the grounds are secure no need to lock valuables.....believe it!

After spending two months travelling around East Africa for work, a couple of nights in the posh Gigiri Homestead was just what I needed before I flu back home. The staff are just so friendly, the gardens are lovely and the best thing is that they have these massive African beds with real mattresses!

I definitely recommend it as a safe, secure and relaxing place. Plus they have free internet and it is just around the corner from the UN Head Quarters and Village Market.

Check out the photos I submitted, it gives you a feel for the place.

I arrived in Nairobi completely overwhelmed by the crazy bustling streets, people and cars. Driving up the street to arrive at Gigiri Homestead, the scenery changed to beautifully manicured homes and lawns and a sense of serenity. Martha and her staff greeted me at the door and showed me into a comfortably furnished room. I enjoyed a
home cooked warm meal, good conversation with the others staying at the hotel and as an added bonus.. free wireless internet! Overall,
my stay was lovely. The staff were courteous and helpful, and I felt as comfortable at Gigiri Homestead as I would in my own home. The property is located in a great neighborhood, close to the UN and the village market. I felt safe throughout my stay. The homestead also helped me get around the city by helping me negotiate to have a great
cab driver show me around for half of the day. All in all, I whole heartedly recommend this homestead. Nairobi's an intimidating place, even for the most seasoned traveler and it's great to have a little oasis to escape to.

I was referred here by a friend and will definitely be coming back.

Gigiri Homestead has an excellent location right next to the United Nations, a stone's throw from major shopping centers, good restaurants, etc.

Also loved the free wi-fi, tasteful and comfy furnishings, and the attentiveness of the staff.

The place is perfect for stays of a week or more - you quickly feel right at home.

My advice: book soon. It's going to be hard to get a room here once more people learn about Nairobi's "best-kept secret."

Stayed here in January 2014 for a week and returned for 2 nights in April 2014. The property is beautiful, the rooms nicely furnished and clean, and the service friendly and warm. Very quiet and peaceful place and good breakfast served. UN complex and Village Market (for Maasai Market) within walking distance of the homestead.

Dinners served were good too and is catered to personal choice. I had two wonderful stays. No complaints and will return when I'm back in Nairobi.
