I loved our one night stay at this property. After traveling for a few days to get to Kenya, this was the perfect place to spend a restful night to catch up on sleep. I love the non-commercial, authentic feel to it that makes me feel like I’m Africa. If you’re more of a hotel person with all the boring, sterile hotel amenities, this may not be for you. Although we arrived relatively late in the evening, they willingly cooked us dinner from a surprisingly large menu. I really appreciated that they remembered my dietary restriction of low-sodium and cooked me a delicious chicken stir fry with very little sodium, which is an amazing feat. The breakfast was equally excellent, including a passion fruit juice that was the best I’ve ever had. The property grounds are gorgeous and the decorations in the main areas are so interesting that you could spend hours just looking at them. The location in Karen makes it a perfect spot if you want to go shopping. I wish we had stayed a little longer, especially to use the pool, but will definitely put this at the top of my list of places to stay when visiting Nairobi.

Our group of 4 just finished gorilla trekking and 5 days of glamorous camping on the Masai-Mara. We only stayed 1 night at Macushla House in the Karen District of Nairobi. The staff and service were very helpful, and since the house was not fully booked we were each given separate rooms. It was a beautiful and relaxing location, and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the monkeys play in the trees. The pool, gardens and patios provided a zen-like location for our last night in Africa. All our sightseeing the next day (Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary, Giraffe Center, and Karen Blixen Restaurant/ Museum) was extremely close by requiring little traveling.

We only had one night here but the staff, especially Peter the Barman, made us very welcome. They were there at 5.30 in the morning to offer breakfast to us and other fellow travellers. The furnishings are characterful and unusual and the rooms comfortably appointed. A haven en route through Nairobi. We had a delicious dinner.

After traveling for two days to arrive in Kenya, we were delighted to spend 3 nights at Macushla House and be treated so well by Peter, Millicent and Stephen. Although we arrived before actual check in we were shown to our room, had lunch and dosed by the pool for the afternoon. The food was very good. We had 1/2 board - breakfast and dinner and my goodness they cooked up a feast each night. We had a private table for two in the bar area overlooking the pool. The location can't be beat for visiting the Karen area, and if in Nairobi again I would choose to stay here for the intimacy of meeting people and feeling connected to the community.

A peaceful oasis that feels miles away from Nairobi, yet walking distance to Giraffe Centre and quick drive to the can't-miss Sheldrick Trust. We were thoroughly enchanted by this magical B&B. And it IS magic, how they can make so much lovely food to order! The chef is clearly a magician.

Rooms are so comfortable and charming, we hated to leave! Little touches everywhere like welcome drinks, snacks in your room upon arrival and every day we got a little gift. (The beaded keychains in particular are tiny treasured mementos of our time in Africa!) And the common areas are so welcoming, not to mention fascinating, each room is like a little museum! (Be sure to ask the owner about his Masai spear!)

The staff are SO kind, going out of their way at every turn to make your stay unforgettable. Even the lovely gentleman at the gate greeted us with a huge smile and wave every time we came and went! Be sure to take your tea down the path and to the "perch," for lack of a better word. (They will know what you mean.)

In short, this is the perfect place to recharge your batteries upon arrival in Nairobi or relax after an amazing Kenyan safari. All of the guests seem to feel a part of something special while they are here and we made lots of new friends at breakfast and dinner from all over the world. If memory serves (Million Dollar Baby) Macushla means "my beloved," and our little family of three fell head over heels for Macushla House.

Fond memories of our stay, made special by the very warm and efficient hosting by Stephen and Peter. We cannot fault them. Despite our very late arrival we were cooked fresh dinner. Very nice lounge area with open fire, very necessary in the cool weather. The food was delicious, just as good as the top rated restaurant we visited (Talisman). The cats and monkeys were delightful. We stayed in the two bedroom cottage which had a lovely lounge area and verandah with swahili style day beds. The windows would be better with bars fitted, as at the main house, and at all accommodation I have ever stayed in in Nairobi (to feel secure whilst allowing windows open at night). The showers were a bit weak and could really do with a heated towel rail to take the chill off the room; it felt as cold as camping!

We arrived after midnight for the beginning of our Kenya and Uganda travels. A very long trip needed a restful customer focused recovery before starting this active trip and Macushla House delivered. Millicent met us at that late hour and her smiling face greeted us a few hours later at breakfast. The food was fantastic - we asked the chef to come out of the kitchen so we could tell him so. One of our party was celebrating a birthday and the Millicent and Stephen jumped into action to make it a memorable breakfast on the day we departed. I highly recommend staying here.

My husband and I stayed at Macushla House for two nights before we departed for the bush. We appreciated the unique, "of-the-place" decor, friendliness and solicitousness of the staff, comfortable room and bath, and delicious meals. Little details are a big deal when fresh flowers adorn tables, granola is served in a crystal jar, and candies and key chains are waiting on turned down sheets. The Vervet monkeys playing on a bridge and sweet cat seemed to welcome us. We would definitely recommend lovely Macushla House.

We enjoyed a wonderful stay at Macushla House when we arrived in Nairobi. We were straight off a night flight and arrived at the crack of dawn, long before our check in time, but Millicent and the team could not have been more helpful and got us settled straight away. Macushla is an oasis of calm. I loved the decor and the location proved perfect for exploring Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe sanctuary, etc. Our kids loved feeding the monkeys and we all enjoyed the wonderful food and warm, friendly staff - thank you Peter, Millicent and all the team!

We stayed two nights at Macushla House after our safari. The staff could not have been kinder or more helpful! We ate dinner there one night and it was excellent with huge portions. Breakfast each morning was made to order and delicious. The outside patio area is great for relaxing with a book and a drink or tea. I loved the traditional decor from a bygone era in Kenya. Will definitely stay again when I am back in Nairobi.

Hello, I'm in Aurora Colorado and will be staying at Machusla House in June for three nights. We arranged for dinner with our package. If you already visited, we were wondering if they offered lunch.

I arrived into NBO at night and it was about 10pm when we headed to Macushla House. I was met by drivers from the tour company. It is quite a drive from the airport (40 minutes) but in the dark seems longer. Also, on arrival to the house, there was an area power outage which made it really dark. The drivers were familiar with the area, but the roads were hard to choose. But they found it in the pitch blackness. When we pulled up, a woman from the house happily greeted us with a lantern and took me to my room (which was totally dark so she left the lantern). It was good enough to take a quick shower and unpack a few things until morning. You're very close to the orphanage. I'm sure they can get a driver for you. The company I was working with sent someone for me, my guide, who spent the day taking me to Nakumatt, public ellie visits, Kazuri, Utmanduni Crafts, back to the adoptive parent elephant time, then back to Macushla. Hopes this helps.
