During our vacation in Kenya we’ve stayed a total of 3 nights at the Hilton Nairobi.
In this personal review I will share my thoughts and experiences about the hotel and I hope it will be useful for others.

We booked a deluxe room and got upgraded to an executive room due to my gold status. The rooms were pretty big and very clean but also had old furniture and could use a renovation.
The executive lounge was also open but with reduced service, which meant only water, soft drinks, coffee and tea.

Housekeeping came daily but you need to inform the reception if you wish so.

We had plenty of interaction with the staff and they were amazing. Everybody we meet was helpful, friendly and gave us tips for the safari and local sights.

Unfortunately they were also extremely slow. The hotel was really empty but it didn’t matter what you ordered, it took sometimes ages to receive your order.
Especially while breakfast, I think some of the waiters and chef’s were overwhelmed with basic orders, like boiled eggs or providing ham and cheese.

Furthermore the service would be much more pleasant, if the management would provide deodorants for the staff. Many of the waiters and housekeeping unfortunately had a strong body odor.

One more thing about the rooms. It’s not possible to open the windows so the only "fresh air" will be provided through the AC.
Nevertheless in some rooms the AC is located in front of the bed, so in my case I had to turn it off while sleeping. Therefor the room got very warm over night.

I would like to mention Micheal the portier. He was friendly, funny and especially helpful to arrange safe taxis and also making sure the price is fair.

So overall would I recommend the Hilton ?

If you are traveling on business purpose, then the location right in downtown is perfect. Amazing friendly staff and a lot of security measures.

If you’re on vacation, I would recommend to check out the Doubletree because it looks more modern.

I will say that this is an older property, but very elegant and clean with superb service. Most of the hotels in Nairobi have very tight security, which was odd at first but now it makes sense. I will admit that the city center of Nairobi was a bit much for us, it is very fast paced, very busy, and immensely populated. The area is very walkable with lots of eateries close by. (I would recommend Pronto Restaurant on Aga Khan Walk, we ate there 5 times during our 4 day stay.) Our room had a king size bed, a full size sleeper sofa, a bath tub, a mini fridge and a safe. The front desk staff, Davis and Dorothy, were very helpful in arranging transportation to the Karen Hub (shopping mall) and to Amref for our travel COVID tests (which I would highly recommend). There is also a local grocery market a few blocks away. We picked up some packs of cookies to hand out when we were asked for money and food. There is a lot of solicitation in this area, so just be prepared.

The Hilton Nairobi served its purpose well for a downtown hotel for a two night stay…. Arrival night and then -another day to adjust to the time change before our safari. It’s fairly close to the airport. We were surprised at how secure the building is which made us feel safe and secure.

We arrived later at night (10:00) and the front desk staff had the bar provide us drinks despite being closed which was a nice welcome after close to 30 hours of flights. Food was offered as well despite being closed but we weren’t hungry.

The rooms are a little dated. Yet they were very clean. Some wear but some of the aspect of being “dated” was also appealing as the property has some older charm to it in my opinion. Especially in the lobby and restaurant/bar areas.

The staff went above and beyond and as Hilton Honors members breakfast was included each day which saved us a considerable amount of money for our family of five.

Due to covid and being winter the pool
Bar was not open but I imagine it would be a great area to spend some time with some sun, drinks and the pool.

It’s too bad the area downtown does not look safe enough to explore as tourists as we had anticipated doing this but after seeing it in the daylight chose otherwise.

Fantastic stay at the Hilton Nairobi. Booked a one night stay here at short notice due to my flight home being cancelled. Hotel arranged the airport taxi which took a lot of hassle out of the situation. Excellent service from all the staff here. Very understanding of our situation and in recognition of my hilton honors diamond membership granted a late checkout which took the stress out of the situation of having a cancelled flight with the rearranged one not until almost midnight the next day. Breakfast was very good, really good quality with a variety of hot and cold options available. Room was spacious and clean with both a bath and shower. My Diamond status granted access to the executive lounge which provides hot/cold soft drinks throughout the day along with hot snacks and alcoholic drinks for a period during the early evening. Hotel is in a central location to explore the city. Also has an outside pool which was nice, gym facilities and a cafe/restaurant. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and compliments to the very high level of service received from the staff. A five star rating and the hotel is highly recommended.

My husband, daughter and I were staying in Nairobi for 9 nights so we needed 2 rooms. We wanted a reasonably central hotel with a good sized swimming pool. We located a good rate at the Hilton and as my husband is a Hilton Gold Card holder there was a good chance we would be upgraded to the Executive floor. We informed the hotel we would be arriving late. Check in was very friendly and efficient and that set the tone for our whole stay. We had all been upgraded to the Executive floor and a nice plate of cheese, grapes and chocolates had been left in our suite.

The Hilton Nairobi is bang in the centre of bustling Nairobi. I used to visit it regularly more than 50 years ago as I was brought up in the city. We did not expect cutting edge decor and yes the hotel feels rather old fashioned. But the staff are lovely and could not do too much for us. It soon felt like home which says a lot for a hotel that presumably relies mainly on corporate business.

A few detailed points :

. it has a very good sized swimming pool which is invariably quiet during the day.

. the Executive Lounge was invaluable for our type of stay.

. there was an excellent choice at breakfast in the downstairs restaurant and this was matched by the service.

. Nairobi has a vast choice of restaurants of all sorts and sizes so we always went out for dinner. Trip Advisor was helpful in making generally successful choices.

A few comments on Nairobi. There has been massive development since I last visited. It is very very busy. Traffic/driving is a revelation and not always in a good way! I would not recommend driving yourself anywhere near the centre. Choose when to travel if you can and use Ubers which are readily available and excellent value. Generally other prices are higher than most people visiting for the first time might expect. Be prepared for tight security precautions particularly at hotels.

Hope these comments help.

I had a wonderful 10 day stay at this hotel. I would like in particular to express appreciation for the solid security, cleanliness of the rooms and responsiveness of the staff and management to any request. In particular, I would like to recognize Edward from the Executive Lounge for his friendly approach and great conversations. Thank you Hilton for great service during this complex time.

My customer experience at Hilton was amazing right from the front desk to the restaurant staff. I remember staying in room 1211 on the 12th floor at Hilton and I love the room settings and the neatness that greets you when you first enter their rooms.

As a first-time guest at the Travellers Restaurant, PURITY made me feel at home and welcomed to Hilton. Thanks to the timely service of the waiters and waitresses at the restaurant.

If you ask me whether I will love to visit Hilton once again when in Nairobi, my response will be a resounding YES!

The hotel arranged for a car and driver to pick me up at the airport, and I was warmly welcomed by the driver who gave me interesting information about the buildings that we were passing on the way to the hotel. At check-in I received an equally warm welcome and a room on a high floor with great views of the city. The buffet breakfast was extensive and superb, and staff throughout the hotel could not have been more helpful. This is an older property and the rooms, although spotlessly clean, are in need of updating. However, I understand that a new Hilton is currently under construction and is no doubt the reason not not having renovated the current rooms. I would certainly stay here again and look forward to the opening of the new hotel.

The rooms were very clean and the hotel staff are very friendly. Especially those at the front desk. I spotted a few minor rusty fittings in the bathroom but they definitely didn’t impact my comfort. I stayed in two different rooms at different times within a week and both rooms had great views when you look out the window.

The hotel itself was good. It has a beautiful lobby and a couple of great restaurants in it. The rooms we occupied were kind of small and weirdly shaped because the hotel is a circle but it was clean and comfy. The downside was that it is smack in the center of the city and a round-a-bout that was always congested! It took Uber drivers and taxis FOREVER to get to us and because traffic was always so congested around the hotel most drivers asked us to get out and walk so they could avoid getting trapped in the circle. It was conveniently located near a trustworthy and well stocked ATM (ABSA) and we felt safe for the most part walking around.

Hi, the hotel is indeed a great base and is in the centre of town. The hotel has it's own travel agency but I would suggest shopping around. I am not sure from your question if you are on a budget or looking for a luxury safari experience. For both, get a few quotes. I personally prefer the flight transfer options from Wilson airport (a smaller airport just outside the city) direct to the game reserves, than the long drives to the game parks... that said, I have been doing this for many years now and am getting a bit grumpy in my old age! Unlike some others who have commented I would say, "please *do not* miss some of what Nairobi has to offer"! Like any big urban city, care must be taken and I would suggest not wearing jewellery or carrying expensive cameras etc. when walking the streets. I consider it being respectful. A watch you may have picked up from a petrol (gas) station for a few £$ may be worth the money it takes to feed a family for a week - so best not to flaunt. That said, Nairobi is a financial and business capital city and most of the guys walking around have better phones and watches than mine! A few things to do in Nairobi: City Market - a bustling market place not 10 mins walk from the Hilton. Yes you will be swamped with offers of the 'best price' from everyone you meet - but a polite, "I am just looking" or, "sitaki leo, ahsante" (not today, thank you) is ususally enough to help you have a nice wander round... and word travels fast if you just want to look and not be bothered. Remember to see the curios on the first floor. If you do want to buy - BARGAIN! In general, start at 10% of the original price and have in mind your maximum price. If you fancy some different food, there is a lovely Italian place not far from the hotel (less than 5 mins walk), Trattoria Ristorante & Pizzeria. I do not suggest you walk in the dark, but the hotel staff may walk you there and the restaurant staff may walk you back - or simply grab an Uber for the (very) short drive. The restaurant only takes cash but has great food and good steaks. You can also visit Carnivore in Langata - the world's biggest BBQ (probably?!) Great place for a nice meal. The Simba Salon, an almost outdoor nightclub attached offers a friendly place to boogie the evening away. Each night has a different theme (sometimes guest DJs or performers). I always used to go on a Wednesday which was called 'Rock Night'... we would probably call it 'pop night'. Good fun whatever your age. More locally, right across the road from the hotel is Pizza Inn (think Pizza Hut Express), Chicken Inn (Kentucky?) and an Ice cream shop. This is your bog-standard fast food, but you might just want that in your room one night. I also like the relatively new restaurant called Kilimanjaro Jamia which is just across the street from Hilton. It is where the local trendy young (and old) office workers go for lunch in the city. Excellent local food (with an Ethiopian influence), big portions and low prices. Get a seat on the balcony and watch the world go by. Perhaps I have gone overboard in my response (!) but I wanted to say - go and enjoy Nairobi. Be sensible (as per any large city), stay safe and enjoy!
