The manager, Nkole Chewe, is a friendly young man, very accommodating, There is plenty of room, both dorms and private, and 'breakfast' is free, as is Wifi. Unfortunately, if you want real food, you will have to go off the grounds. There is a bar, and often cable TV.

Our stay here was very nice. Nkole arranged for us to be picked up at the station after a long train ride from Livingstone. We really enjoyed our warm welcome and taking a hot shower. In the morning we used their self catering facilities to cook our breakfast. The location of the backpackers is surrounded by large embassies and appears to be in a nice part of the city. I had previously been told that other hostels can be located in areas where it is not safe to wander. We are going to be visiting Tanzania shortly..and the short walk to their Embassy for the Visa and the bank for Exchange from this Backpackers is really convenient for us.

Been here for two weeks and counting! Bird nest is great whether you are here for a night or a month. The people that work and run the place are extremely helpful and lovely, and the location is petty good, it is in a nice neighbourhood. Beds are comfortable enough, and there is a well stocked bar, a lovely outside television area and a good kitchen with cereal always stocked for breakfast. You can get stuff cooked for you pretty cheap or do it yourself. Also has laundry facilities and warm showers (mostly). The premises is really secure and nice and quiet so if you are staying long term (like me) this place is ideal. I'm here for two months and I couldn't be more happy so far, would definitely recommend this place to anyone and if you are here before mid-September come say hi, I am josh :D

What a disappointing end to our groups trip. We had decided to stay here after 3 weeks camping and we were disappointed on so many levels. The kitchen was under construction to such an extent that a normal backpackers would not be operating. The utensils had to initially be cleaned before use. Stains alongside the bedroom walls. Water turned off at the mains after 10 pm. No doors for the large dorm room so strangers would walk through. Would not recommend.

I stayed here for two nights with 6 friends, after booking through hostelworld.com.
The staff were friendly from day 1 and we had a great stay. The sleep quality wasn't the best the first night ('cause of the pillows) but the place is in a peaceful area and right next to Independence Ave. where you can go for a morning run (the best place to run in Lusaka).
We got offered breakfast and watermelon by the staff, and since they were just starting the backpacker they wanted some tips.
All of us think this is a good place to stay if you're in Lusaka for a short time.
Perfect service, value is the best in Lusaka! If I'm staying in Lusaka again, I will stay here.
Thank you!

Simple, clean, no frills accommodation. Stayed for one night after getting off the late bus for Chipata. They offered to pick us up from the bus station which was nice when we rang earlier in the day to make a reservation, but after that we didn't hear from them again despite a few calls and texts. That's alright, the manager was probably busy and we arrived late at 11pm but would have been nice to hear from them. Hot water, and fairly well equipped kitchen where you can make your own breakfast (eggs, bread, jam etc provided). Nice lounge area. Good price for a spacious double room (although we had 3 beds, but only the single bed has a mosquito net) with shared toilet. Simple, clean and basic.

Stayed here for two months while on placement at UTH- really great location to the hospital (5-10min walk), however not so much for getting to the city. About 20min walk to a big supermarket. Staff were friendly and there were several other long stayers at the same time as me so it was like a little family :) (which was cool cuz i travelled by myself!).
Clean, reasonably safe, and pretty good facilities- wifi (this is something you shouldn't take for granted!!), kitchen, washing machine, bar and TV/outside lounge. I had one of the back rooms which was a bit quieter and directly opposite showers etc.
I miss Bird Nest!!

Spent a couple nights here, planning to camp. We spent the first night in our tents during a massive downpour. Out tents and belongings were fine, yet the manager insisted on allowing us to stay in the dorms for no extra charge. The staff was very friendly and the location isn't bad, though there was some construction going on next door. I recommend!

Friendly staff. Very helpful
Place is clean
Hot water almost all the time (a luxury in Zambia)
Free food almost always stocked (coffee, milk, sugar, bread...)
Kitchen is usually clean
Near the hospital (good for me, as I was working there)
Occasionally you have non-guests watching TV, using the bar, using the kitchen (but are always guests of staff). Other hostels are open to the public (which could be a security concern)
The hostel has a mini-bus. Very handy (they can pick you up from the airport, which is a great option as there's no public transport and the taxis are very expensive)
Good chill-out area (big screen TV, bar, comfy chairs)
Near shops and restaurants (but a bit of a trek to the shopping mall)
Very safe area
Cooked meals available
Best Indian restaurant I've ever been to is very close
Decent wifi (a big-time luxury in Zambia)

Overall: I believe it's the best hostel in Zambia. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good.

It is in a very safe area but beware because taxi drivers from the bus station will try to rip you off by telling you it is outside Lusaka center but the fare should be only about 40 kwachas.
Apparently, it was previously the building of the American embassy, it is in the same street as other embassies like German, Canadian and Chinese but there is not much to do around really and you would have to catch a taxi to the city center.
The place is huge, with good facilities and very clean but when I was there actually I was the only guest in the whole place.
The bar looked like a very interesting place with cheap beers and good entertainment system.

"The trick to the showers is that you first turn the knob on the left (the hot one) several times then wait. It may take a few minutes for the water to come out. Then you turn the right knob (cold) several times plus another turn, then you wait until the water is the right temperature and adjust accordingly. If it is too hot, you have turned the left knob too far and need to turn it almost completely off but not totally to adjust to the right temperature. It's simple once you get the hang of it, but for the first shower it is confusing."
