days. Excellent location in Maputo. Fantastic and exceptional staff to help and provide the best stay. Very good meals and breakfast. Some of the rooms need urgent renovation, but overall very pleasant and with a good size.
It has private parking and security.
Returning soon, certainly.
I was very tired and dirty from a long trip and I was desperate for a hot shower. I went to the room, unpacked and went to the shower. Guess what, irony of life – no hot water. So, I called the receptionist he came, checked, went back, returned and he repeated this several times. I told him that he has to change my room. In response he said that they are full and that he can’t move me to another room. I was shocked and wanted to leave, but all the hotels I called were full. Receptionist offered a bucket of hot water (!!!) which I refused an protested – in a hotel which costs $US94? This took two hours and you can imagine how frustrated I was. Eventually miracle happened and they discovered one room for me – after 3 hours I was finally moved to a new room. Do you think that the story ends here? The shower had hardly any pressure and temperature of the water would change every few seconds from very cold to very hot – it was literary impossible to regulate the water. This continued throughout my stay in Villas des Mangas – two weeks. I was not able to find another hotel within the price range I could afford ($US60 – 80), as they were all full in Maputo.
Breakfast in Villas des Mangas turned out to be much worse than in any other hotel I have ever been. I do not want to go in to the details, but the restaurant serving breakfast, dishes, food there was just horrible. Additionally they charged 100MZN ($US3) for single espresso during the breakfast which was included in the room rate.
This was just a beginning. One evening as I watching TV in my room, one of total two English channels, I heard a big bang and ceiling literary collapsed and fell on my bed. The room was covered in dust and rubble. The next morning they came, cleaned sand fixed it.
There was no single glass in the room or an ashtray even though I reminded them several times during two weeks of my stay there. On a daily basis they would forget to put a towel in my room and until I reminded them they wouldn’t bring it.
When I was checking out I raised all these issues and expressed my disappointment, as for the money I paid I hardly received value, quality or services expected for that price in Maputo. They didn’t apologise or offer any discount. I left and promised them that I will send this email to my friends and that I will post this on Internet... they didn’t seem to be bothered.
I have travelled a lot and I continue to travel. I do not have high expectations in some places, and I am used to inconveniences, but this time it was too much. I am sharing this to let you know that Villas des Mangas in Maputo doesn’t worth a penny, it is very inconvenient, dirty, services are horrible, maintenance is not done and the place is falling apart, breakfast/food is terrible and it is extremely expensive for such an environment.
I did my due, now it is up to you if you are going to stay there or recommend this place to your friends. Trust me if you do you or your friends will be highly disappointed, so good luck.
Apart from the helpful staff the rooms are clean and the pool area is excellent.
The real damper on our trip however occured when a friend found Euro 100 stolen from his room during our stay. Although we recognised the hotel could not be held liable we reported it regardless to a rather disinterested reception clerk.
He proceeded to attempt to overcharge us on our bill (additional water we had had at breakfast) and then used the confusion surrounding the overcharged bill to blatantly steal Meticais 200 in cash from me as we were about to leave (witnessed by my friend).
Of course he denied it flatly despite the witness and I left the property absolutely disgusted and my trip to Maputo tainted by the experience. If these incidents had not occured I would have only been to happy to return to Villa das Mangas on future visits.
My advice to travellers thinking of staying there is to watch your pennies carefully and make sure you know the prices of things before you consume them so you avoid any confusion. You too might be taken for a ride!
On arrival in this Humble city, we waited for an hour before deciding to phone the Hotel, as our driver was not there to pick us up.
Fortunately I am Portuguese speaking so could communicate with the Hotel staff, as my wife had tried speaking English with Nobody understanding. Fortunate again there was a Taxi waiting for another person at the Airport to transfer them to the same Hotel, so we asked him to take us to the Hotel Villa das Mangas.
On arrival to our Hotel the Taxi driver had to take our Luggage inside the Hotel as there was nobody from the Hotel, to greet and take our Luggage to the reception.
Polite at reception a mere 4 out of 10, Ten being Great. We had booked 1 Superior Double room, with breakfast. The room, nothing superior( would not like to know what the lesser costing rooms are like), the safe did not work, aircon was dripping inside whilst we were asleep( we only noticed then), wife had tried to wash her hands there was no water at that point in time, but afterwards there was, when we had a shower in the morning, NO HOT WATER.
The Hotel has a lovely setting with a beautiful pool and patio chairs outside where you can have Lunch or Dinner. A lovely bar area with an outside patio looking onto the main road, and very helpful waiters and staff. That evening was a lovely Jazz band playing with great music.
Breakfast was a 6 out of 10, Ten being great.
For the price of this Hotel I did expect much more, sad that our experience was not a good one, but maybe it was just not our day, however I would not recommend, because of the value one pays for and what one receives in turn.
Love Maputo Beautiful humble people and great food, will be back, but unfortunately not this Hotel, as we did book into another Hotel in Maputo for Three nights and it was Marvelous.

The room had windows from floor to ceiling, hence a view to the swimmingpool area. That also meant, that everybody could look into my room, unless I pulled the black-out curtains. No possibility to open the windows. The bathroom and bedroom were divided by a transparent glass wall, hence no privacy inside the bathroom, except there was a tiny frosted glass divider, the “sitter” could pull when sitting on the WC. The safe was not fitted to anything and could be taken out without nobody noticing it. There was no smoke detector nor evacuation plan. At the swimming pool area I ordered a glass of wine from the menu. To avoid any misunderstanding, I pointed on the item I wanted. It turned out, that prices on the menu did not correspond to reality. The real price was 20% higher, and that was not because of VAT. The waiter told me, that the price on the menu was wrong. Breakfast was served between 7 and 10. The fruit was good.
It is my feeling, that everything was cramped into a small place, so if you suffer from claustrofobia, be aware.
Check-out is at 12:00 noon, but already at 10:40 one of the housekeepers knocked on my door and asked when I would vacate the room. At 11:20 when I wanted to wash my hands, there was no water pressure, none ! Fortunately I had my shower a couple of hours earlier.
As recepcionistas simpáticas e queridas foi o que salvaram nossa estadia.
