The hotel needs a revamp and sorely needs maintenance and a better level of cleaning. I was locked in the toilet of the foyer as the toilet door handle was off, fortunately I was “rescued” within 5 minutes ….. the solution to the problem I saw the following day was to put toilet paper in the lock. The bathroom in my room has certainly not been given a good clean in months, the mildew on the t grouting and corners was awful. Dinner was cold and substandard, breakfast was overall a 2/5.

Let's be clear up front: this isn't a European five-star hotel. But what it is, is a neat and clean place to stay if you're in town for business. It's fairly close to the airport and city centre, and has a decent bar to have a couple of drinks and meet people. Dinner was an unexpected highlight: it was a fixed buffet, instead of a la carte, but the baked whole fish with boiled potatoes and vegetables was one of the best things I've eaten in a long time.

The hotel is well situated. The decor is high quality and stylish but needs a bit of upkeep here and there, the stairwell for instance. Rooms are spacious and breakfast is served buffet style. Lovely outdoor pool area.

No food available from the restricted menu. The limited choice, repeated from lunch was served cold with the same bowl of mayonnaise with the same bits in it from lunchtime. Customer service was shockingly bad with no management on site. Checking out tomorrow and moving hotels.

I stayed 7 nights at this supposedly 5-star hotel. A shuttle bus picked me up at the airport which was really nice. Location is acceptable but far from perfect if u are doing business. Hotel infrastructure is just below average whereas rates are not. Reception area is spacious and well furnished. Swimming pool is rather small but correct as well as the poolside area. There is no fitness room. Breakfast is acceptable but less than average for a 5*. Bar is ok. Restaurant is a no-no-no. Don't even try it!! Rooms are comfortable and bathrooms are rather small but still acceptable. But they are not properly isolated so they are noisy. A/C is good but noisy. Reception staff is professional but not friendly at all. Service in general is UNFRIENDLY and staff will never go the extra mile. Waiters would not even say "Bom dia" to their guests. Room service took 45 minutes to bring sparkling water and ice. The free internet service is TERRIBLE and goes at turtle speed (0.06 Mbps download) Unfortunately I had booked through Expedia and had to pay my 7 nights in advance (big mistake) Otherwise I'd walked away. So all in all, a VERY BAD EXPERIENCE with VERY POOR VALUE FOR MONEY. So walk away from this hotel unless everything else is fully booked. Will not recommend it and I'll never come back.

I have stayed at this hotel twice before as a stopover, before going further north in Mozambique and it was great. The hotel is by no means cheap, but was in the past comfortable. We could have stayed at a number of similar high end hotels for the same price. This time however, 24/12/12, it was a very different story and a very disappointing stay. After travelling some 7 hours and 4 hours at the SA/Mozambique border, we booked in, the hotel was near empty, the room my husband and I got people had obviously been smoking in and it smelt that way, the room my son got did not have working air conditioning or a flushing toilet. Keep in mind that on booking in we were told that they had just completed an upgrade! After complaining and being promised the problems would be fixed, we changed and went to the bar for a drink. The staff were so busy watching football on TV, they completely ignored us and when asked if they have wine, I was informed that there was non available! Eventually they found a half sealed bottle in the restaurant (where the chef was sitting at a table with the waiters, no customers) and when I received it, instead of the cork being pulled, it had been pushed into the bottle! Our experience did not end there, the restaurant was empty, we had a waiter that could not explain any of the dishes to us, and what we received was disgusting, to say the least. Whatever we ordered was not available, but we were not told this, it was substituted by the chef, at his discretion, with whatever was available without discussion with us the patrons. I asked to speak to the manager on duty only to be advised that there was no one in charge and no manager on duty. We refused to pay for the food and I was advised that I could meet the manager at 08h00 the next morning. I went to check out the next morning and to meet with the manager, only to be told that he was in the shower and I should complete the complaints book! I was ready to leave my empty wine bottle, with the cork inside, as a present for him when he arrived to tell us that he is in fact the international CEO and knew nothing of the problems we experienced, was not called and he then proceeded to call all the staff (who are few) to find out what happened and to tell them off in front of us. Very unprofessional! No compensation was offered and I was invited to lodge my complaint on their web page, which I will do. Very poor service and quality of rooms and food and would not recommend to any one to support this group.

Stayed at Maputo VIP for 5 day conference in September 2008.
Two small lifts which only worked very intermittently, and no main staircase, forced the use of the generally unlit fire escape stairs on most occasions. Good job the hotel is only 4 floors!
Hot water in the bathroom on only 2 occasions during the stay - one early morning, the other mid afternoon. The remainder of the time it was stone cold. Repeated requests for it to be fixed met with suprise that there was a problem and assurances that "the engineer" would attend to it. The only time anyone actually came he ran the taps for about 20 minutes, agreed it wasn't hot, and went away never to be seen again. A complaint to the housemaid also got the taps run, followed by an assurance it was "hot ok, fine - no problem".
Electronic room safe was closed on arrival and took 3 days to get opened, eventually after demanding someone to come with me at the reception desk - the previous 3 requests having been ignored.
Towels were taken away but not replaced on 3 of the 5 days.
Only ate buffet breakfasts at the hotel, but it was of very poor standard and selection, almost always cold, and very difficult to get anyone to bring coffee. You need the patience of a saint to get any toast from the slowest manual toaster on the planet.
Room was smallish, but relatively clean and at least the beds were comfortable.
I will NOT be back!

This was probably a great hotel a few years ago.
There was almost no one staying at it when we visited. This showed, as it is ageing with no money spent on improving it.
It was clean though.
Breakfast was ok, normal fair, but limited.
Staff very helpful and obliging.
Would not stay here again as it was empty.

I stayed at the VIP Grand Maputo hotel the week between the 16/05/2017 and 20/05/2017. I was there for a conference with several diplomats of the African Union (we were about 100). On the first day I arrived, that night at about 7pm, me and another workshop participant decided to go out for a bite at a local restaurant. We had been walking for just about 2 minutes (about 150m from the hotel) when a police patrol composed of 6 young policemen (4 of them at least had machine guns) stopped us and asked us for our IDs. There was absolutely no reason to ask for our ID and I was certainly not going to give it to them without any more explanation. We told them we left our passport in our hotel which was literally across the street. They did not want to hear about it and informed us in a quite cocky way that we needed to go with them to the police station for further questioning; when I told them I did not want to have any of it, they offer to "sort" things out on the spot asking us for money (kickbacks). That is when I lost the plot and threaten them that they would hear from my embassy as I was now considering this as a diplomatic incident. I urged them to let us go since there was no reason for any of that non sense. I repeated that our passport were safely in our hotel and that they were more than welcome to follow us to have a look at them; that say I started walking back to the hotel. Their scam having failed they were forced to accept defeat and did not even bother following us back to the hotel. Similar scenarios occurred just about every night with other patrons during that week, 2 of whom gave up on the threat and handed US$100 to the crooked cops. This seemed to have been so well organised that we wondered if someone at the hotel was part of the scam (the security guard outside the hotel perhaps). The police chief was alerted the first night this happened to me but this did not stop 3 more event in exactly the same manner; it is clear that nothing had been done to stop the crocked cops. I was also not impressed by the hotel reception reaction who despite my reporting the event, did not warn the hotel guests to take care when leaving the hotel in the evening, hence it happened 3 more times after our ordeal that I know of: I was made aware of this particular incidents after discussing my story with them, there might actually have been more people affected by the police scam. I was told to fill a report at the diplomat’s police station few blocks away but unfortunately I was too busy with meetings to make the time. I did report the event through an email I sent to someone who was in contact with the chief of police while the reception assured me that they were passing on the information to the chief of police themselves who happens to be a regular guest of the hotel. Since my last email and discussion with the hotel manager who is supposedly in contact with the chief of police, I did not hear anything more since my reporting the incident. I am now back home and wanted to make sure people were warned that a police scam was taking place in the street of Maputo potentially in collusion with the VIP Grand Maputo Hotel . Cheers and take care.

Initially I thought the reviews had been a bit harsh: the staff were very friendly and the reception and bar staff competent, the breakfast was fine, and the wifi worked very well. Yes the room were not great, but they were average enough to not complain (though don't count on the TV for entertainment - that said, in Maputo, why would you want to stay in the hotel watching TV....).

But then the supermarket music in the corridor, debatable but tolerable, woke me up at 0400 in the morning. If you add the absence of towels in the morning (all of them, just gone....), combined with the non-working phone to call reception to ask for towels, then clearly this place could do a little bit extra to earn is purported 5 staff (which it is definitely not).

I mentioned the absence of towels when checking out, and without having asked for it got a rebate on the room. So now I have gone full circle, once more underscoring the friendly and (now a bit less competent because of the missing towel) service, and leaving the hotel thinking they could do much better, but until then, they will stay at the average rating....
