The unexpected cancellation of my onward journey flight ticket to Johannesburg put me in a bit of a dilemma. Where do you go when the world is closing it’s borders. Southern Sun - Maputo has become my new home, and what a fantastic place to stay. Sited on the seashore this beautiful hotel should definitely be on your bucket list. The moment you walk in to the hotel it’s decor treats your eyes and makes you feel at home. The front desk team are extremely friendly and attentive and that level of service runs throughout the hotel, be it at the bar, restaurant, poolside or house keeping. The breakfasts are to die for and certainly are a great way to start the day. The chefs cook your food directly and with those health conscious ones amongst us they also have a fantastic cereal, fruits and pastry selections. Orange Juice is freshly squeezed and others are available. A full coffee bar is there to satisfy you with your daily caffeine fix . The attention to detail that comes with the cappuccino is as what you would expect from a blue chip coffee house. The menus for lunch and dinner offer a great selection and the food is served like artwork - it certainly tastes as good as it looks every time. The pool is clean and tidy and the grounds are well maintained. Laundry is efficient and returns next day. The gymnasium is well stocked and extremely clean, and for the those who need to maintain their look the hair salon is opposite. As I went on a reunion with my sister for a week the hotel was the perfect base to tour around Maputo. The hotel is like a sanctuary with all the world class luxuries. Every single employee from GM right down to the cleaning stuff was amazingly welcoming, friendly and courteous. The hotel and rooms are the cleanest I have seen in a long time. Breakfast was the highlight for sure!!

My company use Southern Sun exclusively for Maputo because it maintains such exceptional standards.
Ho Tai, the hostess in the restaurant is particularly helpful and courteous.
Unbelievable breakfasts and food. Clean and with all facilities made available.
Bruce the owner, will always go out of his way for anybody to help link up business needs.

Struttura molto bella e ben posizionata nella città di Maputo, con una vista incantevole sul mare. I punti a favore terminano qui. Il servizio è stato sinceramente imbarazzante: siamo stati riprotetti qui da parte di un altro hotel (Stayeasy) che evidentemente aveva avuto problemi; siamo stati ricevuti con freddezza ma professionalmente. Arrivati in camera (davvero minuscola), solo una bottiglia d'acqua per due persone e niente di disponibile nel frigobar, neanche pagando. Chiamamo di notte la reception che ci re-indirizza al servizio in camera, che non risponde. Per farla breve, ci sono volute circa 15 chiamate per avere dell'acqua, pagata molto cara. La mattina alle 7:30 gran casino nel corridoio, con le signore delle pulizie che bussano alle 8 per sapere se c'è della biancheria sporca.
Colazione niente di che, certamente non al livello della struttura.
Per la cifra pagata si trova di molto meglio. Peccato, perchè la struttura è magnifica, ma la gestione pessima; almeno, da quello che ho potuto vedere per una notte trascorsa lì.
Very nice and well located property in the city of Maputo, with an enchanting view of the sea. The pros end here. The service was embarrassing: we were re-protected here by another hotel (Stayeasy) which appartently had problems; we were received coldly but professionally. Arrived in the room (sooo tiny), only a 0.5 liter bottle of water for two people booked and nothing available in the minibar, not even paying. Separate single beds (not required - we were travelling as a couple). We call the front desk at night and they redirect us to room service, which doesn't answer. In short, it took about 15 calls to get some water, which was very expensive. In the morning at 7:30 big mess in the corridor, with the cleaning ladies knocking at 8 to find out if there is any dirty laundry.
Breakfast nothing special, certainly not at the level of the structure.
For the amount paid there is so much better. Too bad, because the structure is magnificent, but the management is bad; at least, from what I could see for one night there.

It is unfortunate that this hotel blows both hot and cold. So to be fair, let us start with the hot: Great location; Great Pasta dishes - especially the Smoked Salmon Fettuccini. Really good; Friendly housekeeping staff; Helpful management (unfortunately this only becomes apparent due to one of the 'cold' experiences) The cold outweighs the hot by far, sadly: Disinterested and inattentive staff in the restaurant and bar. This is probably my biggest concern with this establishment. Only when the management gets involved, does it improve - for a while. I have had too many unpleasant restaurant and bar experiences to list here. Wrong orders, delayed orders, poor food etc. A so- called Cheese Platter which is described in the menu as a selection of Continental Cheeses: dry fruit, nuts and crackers. A plate of cubed cheddar and mozzarella, with olives and little fish crackers! (See photo) Due to the above, I have serious reservations regarding the hotel Star rating system if this is a 4 Star establishment.

Southern Sun Maputo is rather overrated from my experience and need to do so much better from maintaining cleanliness of their rooms. The musty smell of the entire building, corridors and rooms was appalling and out of the three nights booked I only stayed one. Over the last 5 years I have spent a great deal of time in Maputo, most of it staying at the Southern Sun, this includes a total of over 7 months during the Covid 19 pandemic. During this period, the hotel management and staff went above and beyond to provide the highest levels of facilities and services including safety standards during this difficult period. The head chef deserves a lot of credit as he turns out some incredible dishes often to order and individual taste, especially the King Tiger Prawns and Sea Food Platter are world class. I'd like to recognise HoTai and Zuneid in particular for their incredible service always there to help and take care of me. I'd like to thank Bruce (the boss) and John (2 I/c) 😀 for their incredible support, help and friendship. Great hotel, fantastic location, incredible people and a great time. Thank you. 🙏

What a wonderful experience. The rooms are extremely comfortable with good linen, strong Air-conditioning and attention to detail. Mark and John is leading a team of friendly and well trained staff. Everyone from Reception , to Restaurant, Bar, and housekeeping is friendly and goes the extra mile to make you feel at home. I had breakfast and dinner which I enjoyed thoroughly. I will be sure to visit again.

I am vegan and it is a struggle for me to eat out. ANACLETO has cheerfully approached me in my first day during breakfast. The fruits in the breakfast selection are amazingly tasty yet I need something savory to follow up with. Anacleto arranged some cooked greens for me to have for all the three days I was here and I was totally satisfied. I found comfort and trust in him because he mentioned that he is aware of how veganism works out. He made my stay more enjoyable because I was able to nourish my body the way I want to. I definitely encourage everyone to try the breakfast in this place. The fruits and veggies are too fresh for words. Never miss that glass of fresh OJ. Thanks for the yummy vegan food, Anacleto!
