If you like the idea of staying in a tent but are put off by the thought that it won’t be comfortable, this place is your ideal holiday.
The “tents” do have fabric sides but a proper thatched wooden roof and come with electricity, hot and cold water, air conditioning and wi-fi. You can sit on your deck on a comfortable sun lounger or slide into your private plunge pool while watching hippos dipping in the shallows of the river, and a family of warthogs grazing in the grass below.
We had been concerned about mosquitoes but the walls of the tent are well netted and the bed itself has a net strong enough to keep out the elephants which roam nearby ! Despite travelling in the wetter rainy season we were not bothered by mozzies in the camp or out on game drives and visits.

At the lodge you will be assigned a guide who will take you on game drives, river cruises and on a visit to the falls, all of which are included in the price of the stay. The guides are without exception friendly, knowledgeable and willing to tailor your experience as much as possible. I could not fault our guide GoGo (apart from the fact he was a Man Utd supporter😆) and he made sure we had a great time , driving us back safely after we got caught in a tropical downpour of biblical proportions.

The food was also simply exquisite. Quite how the chefs manage to produce such a variety of local and international dishes to such a high standard in the middle of the bush is amazing. The waiters were attentive and quickly learned our personal preferences for drinks and milk in tea and coffee.

Being a relatively small property means that the service from all the staff is personal - you very quickly get on first name terms with each of them and it is such a refreshing change from staying in a “big brand” hotel chain. Tara was a delightful hostess and made sure we were well looked after.

Be aware that this is not a fenced lodge and the local wildlife is free to roam in close proximity. We found it a delight to watch hippos and warthogs and impala nearby, but it does mean that you have to be accompanied by the staff back to your room after dark.

The lodge is also located about 15 minutes up river from the town of Victoria Falls so if you want to eat there or go shopping the staff will drive you into town. In my opinion the location away from the town and the noise of the helicopters over the falls themselves was a big advantage but some may prefer the “bright lights” of downtown Vic Falls!

In summary, this is a simply outstanding place to stay for a holiday you will never forget. Zimbabwe may be a troubled country but it’s people are hospitable and friendly , hard working and dedicated to providing their guests with a great experience. If you get a chance just go and stay here - you will not regret it.

Great location, great safari activities, and a great and attentive staff. The routine of each day here is pretty much the same, although what you see on safari varies. There are game drives at 6-9 am and 4:30-7 pm - when you will see elephant, giraffes, hippos, impala, wildebeest, various monkeys, and much more. In between, you can enjoy your room (with the deck and small plunge pool with views of the Zambezi River), the lodge area, and lots of food. The restaurant staff is great, and very accommodating. The guides are also very knowledgeable and friendly. Our family group of ten ranged in age from 18 to 88 ... and all did well here. On Christmas Eve, they threw a nice party of the river bank with live music. Highly recommended.

All the rooms are wood framed houses/huts, with thatched roofs and tent canvas exterior walls. We were in Room 12, which is about a five minute walk from the lodge. In the evening when it is dark, for safety, staff requires you to be escorted to/from your rooms (after all, you are in a lodge camp located right in the middle of a nature preserve).

As for Victoria Falls, it is just a 15 min or so ride into town from the lodge. Your guides will likely bring you very early in the morning, you'll arrive around 6:30 or so, and view it before it is too crowded and too hot.

We spent three wonderful nights in one of the stargazer suites out on the island. Our room was simply amazing - an enormous, comfortable room with a huge bathroom and two verandas (one in front of our room and another on the roof of our room). The view of the Zambezi is breathtaking and you can see the mist from Victoria Falls in the distance. The room is well-appointed and has all you need. There are USB ports next to each side of the bed so it's easy to charge devices and there is a refrigerator near the door which will be stocked with your favorite drinks. The bathroom has a tub if you prefer or terrific waterfall shower heads if you rather take a shower. There is also a plunge pool out on the veranda. One very nice touch - the mosquito netting is actually a lovely linen curtain rather than netting as it is so many other places.
The rooms are connected to the main area by an elevated walkway so there is no need for an escort unless you want one. The animals (for example, hippos and elephants) roam the property so you never know what you will see.
The food is delicious, plentiful, and interesting. Leo and Prince (the excellent chefs) will make sure you don't go hungry.
Sanette runs a great lodge. Roy was our wonderful butler and took superb care of us. If we needed anything all we had to do was ask and it quickly appeared. We had two great sundowner cruises. Thanks to Beks and Blessed for finding baby elephants playing in the mud, hippos, giraffes, a crocodile, and beautiful birds. We also had a great game drive with Blessed where we saw a clan of hyenas with babies and elephants crossing the highway (along with so much more).
The Lodge is in a great location with easy access to Vic Falls and all the area has to offer. We very much enjoyed our stay and would love to go back again.

True private island experience with an unmatched level of exclusivity as it has only six beautiful rooms in a treehouse setting. Attentive and welcoming staff made us feel as if this was our home away from home. Manager Peter, Butler Reeves, and guide Blessed all made sure that we had a memorable stay in this paradise setting on the Zambezi river. Exceptional food with amazing sunsets and sunrises in a peaceful environment made this lodge stand out in all respects.

WOW! When we arrived we were met by our guide, Beks, who was our guide for the duration of our stay. He transferred us from the mainland to our treehouse on the island which sits in the middle of the Zambezi River. Beks asked us lots of questions on the way to understand what we wanted out of our stay with them. We shared a love for bird watching and photography and he started pointing out birds immediately. When we arrived on the island we were welcomed by Zana who was managing the island and our personal butler, Roy. Both were so friendly, welcoming and helpful. We were greeted with a glass of sparkling wine to enjoy during the check-in formalities.

The rooms are incredible with a large bed, AC, complimentary drinks and coffee machine, shower, WC, bathtub and sliding doors which open out on to a large balcony overlooking the river with a plunge pool. The bed is positioned to overlook the river and faces the beautiful sunrises. The meal choices during our stay were wonderful with a large selection of choices for breakfast from cooked meals to continental options. There were also choices of main courses and desserts during the 4 course evening meals.

Beks' knowledge of birds, wildlife and regional history was awesome and very interesting. Nothing was too much trouble for him as he escorted us around Victoria Falls, on river cruises and game drives as well as other excursions. Zana was very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay, she provided us with lots of information on the country and city as well as recommending local things to do such as eating at The Dusty Road restaurant in Vic Falls which was fantastic. We highly recommend doing that. Our butler, Roy, was always smiling and nothing was ever too much trouble. His standard of service and care was exceptional.

This is a very luxurious resort and it is worth every single penny. We highly recommend this resort to anyone wanting to see the falls, the Zambezi or experience the wonderful country of Zimbabwe.

I’ve never experienced better hospitality than at Victoria River Lodge. The hosts catered to our various needs and provided a personalized experience. We looked forward to coming back from our tours each day and seeing the beautiful display that the cleaning people prepared in our rooms! Workers also escorted us to our rooms at night so that we didn’t have to walk through the area alone. The chefs were just as accommodating. Our family has various dietary restrictions, and the chef took the time to get to know our needs and preferences in order to provide some of the best food we’ve ever had in our lives.

The rooms themselves were beautiful. They took “glamping” to the next level! They were spacious, clean, and decorative. The feeling of showering overlooking the wilderness is like no other! We had some animals approach our room, like monkeys, baboons, and elephants. Such a cool experience being in the middle of nature!

We loved the VFRL. Blessed was our guide and was the best! His knowledge of the area and the falls was very informative. Obey was our lodge manager and Reeves our butler/server. Everything at this place was top notch.
The rooms were great with private lunge pools and overlooking the Zambezi River. The food was beautifully plated and offered a good variety of options. Whenever we returned to the island we were greated with wet wash cloths to freshen up.
If we ever go back to Zmbabwe this is where we will stay. Highly recmmend this place.

If you want to be treated like royalty, eat great food, and be served by the best staff in Victoria Falls, then you should stay here. You will not be disappointed. We stayed in luxurious tent accomodations across Africa, this was the only place that offered air conditioning and WiFi in the tent.

My husband and I stayed at Victoria Falls River Lodge Island for 4 fabulous nights. Where do I even begin to start with how wonderful it was. There is a lodge on the mainland and then an added lodge on the little island directly opposite with 6 tree houses. We stayed in a tree house on the island. We had a seamless and friendly pick up from the airport to be met on the Zambezi river by our guide Blessed who took us by boat, passing hippos, to the island. We were met by a welcome team who consisted of Peter and Obert. In fact every time we went off the island the welcome party was there on the jetty to meet us on our return. Obert was to be our own personal butler for our stay and what a polite, kind, friendly, humble, wonderful man he was. Peter the manager was so friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening chats at the bar. Peter has the most incredible knowledge of much of Africa and was fascinating to talk to. Blessed our guide took us wherever we wanted to go and was so knowledgable about the wildlife and the area. The tree houses were beautiful, amazing views, fabulous decor, super comfortable bed, every amenity you could think of, outdoor/indoor shower, personal plunge pool and sun beds, fridge, coffee making facilities, complimentary laundry...I could go on and on!! The food was truly delicious and incredible curtesy of Leo the chef and there was a choice at every meal. We went on beautiful river cruises which included hippos, huge crocodiles and stunning sunsets and we also went on game drives. We visited the incredible Victoria Falls and my husband went white water rafting while I stayed behind having some spa treatments. We can highly recommend this wonderful place and will think of the very special time we had there often.

I see that the answer was given for the price. Our entrance was paid for as part of our package/stay. They will send a driver with you - who will provide a basic tour. So, remember you will need to tip your driver. As to which side - or both to see the falls from. The best views - straight on - are on the Zimbabwe side. If you are going to see one thing, that would be it. However (and we didn't do this), I was told if you want to go down to ground level and see the falls from the base - you need to do that in Zambia. Also, depending on when you are going, if you want to swim right at the top of the falls (Devils Cauldron), that is also on the Zambia side.

I will be visiting in August. Do you recommend taking malaria pills?
Answer from ShelleyGO
Weehawken, New Jersey32 contributions14 helpful votes
That's really a personal decision. Zimbabwe does have malaria and the lodge is on the river, so you'll likely see mosquitos and other bugs. I visited in April and did not take malaria pills, but a travel doctor would probably recommend you do so. The lodge does have a lot of mosquito repellant available in the rooms and in the lobby area, and you should wear long sleeves and pants in the morning and evenings when they are most active (it's cooler at that time anyway).
Answer from citysecond
Chicago, Illinois7 contributions1 helpful vote
Yes. They arranged transport both to and from the airport. Also, they will take you into town - and arrange a guide for the falls. You are expected to pay for the entrance to the falls - and do need to tip the driver. I would suggest tipping well.

No map. But it is a straight layout and the furthest away from the main reception and restaurant is Number 1 unit. It is about 5-7 mins away only. But lots of happening there.

Yes laundry facilities are available and in your room is a list of charges per item. The lodge runs game drives and also sunset cruises on the Zambezi River (I recommend this). No problem with bottled water as far as I could see.
