Located in South Central Serengeti, within the Moru Kopjes area, Serengeti Pioneer Camp is ideally situated to offer superlative access to the annual migration and the ‘Big 5’ with sweeping views overlooking Moru Kopjes, Lake Magadi and the endless plains. Paying homage to the mobile camps of the 1930’s, a time when an African safari was truly a journey into the unknown, Serengeti Pioneer Camp’s ‘zero footprint’ and close proximity to nature combines to make an unmistakably distinctive and truly individual offering. Comprising of twelve-tented rooms, all of which have en-suite facilities including a flushing toilet, vanity basin, and showers, the tent interiors are designed to evoke the very best of an era long-gone but certainly not forgotten.

This was our favorite lodge we stayed at throughout our safaris through Tanzania for first and foremost its incredible location, setup, views, and accommodations, but just as important, the staff’s genuine and superior hospitality. The entire staff from the welcome we received each day to their constant attention to our needs to their love of telling us about their land was consistently delightful all day every day. Our housekeeper, Alex, always made up our room special for our honeymoon, and our butler, Ben, was always attentive and overly pleasant. The two Maasai tribe members who walked us to our tent each night and morning always engaged us in stories while the managers always made sure we were satisfied. Chef Joseph treated us to breakfast on the rocks one day, and we always looked forward to breakfast and dinner. Cannot say enough about EVERY staff member – they fully immersed us into the Tanzanian culture – Hakuna Matata.
In addition to the world-class hospitality, the experience and venue was out of this world. We had a private tent suite that was visited regularly by a herd of impalas. The gathering space gave a sprawling lookout of the whole Serengeti and the local mountain hyraxes. There was even a male lion just outside our camp the first two nights we stayed there – we will never forget drinks and falling asleep to the lion’s low rumbling roars claiming his territory. The lodge was Tanzania at its finest – Thank you Pioneer team for an unforgettable honeymoon!

We stayed 3 nights in this wonderful camp.
Each family is assigned by one person from the camp staff who professionally takes care of everything you want. We have been taken care by Juma who was wonderful and took care of our family. Juma was always with us at each meal, he also woke up at 3 am to heat the water for our shower and serve us tea coffee and cakes before our trip to ballon flight. Juma is very positive, discreet and genuine person. And is extremely friendly. He was teaching us Kiswahili. We were literally spoiled.

Tents are beautifully furnished with an African feel.
Marcel who took care of our tent did it always discretely and at the times we were absent. The tent was always very clean and free from any insects.
We had best sleeps ever as the nights in February are less warm and we had warm bottles in our beds to comfort us.
The breakfast and dinner experience was wonderful as the tables are set in the outside area and overviewing Serengeti fields.
The camp is guarded 24/7 so we felt safe from wild animals.
Antelopes and monkeys wandering among tents and leaving at the area made us feel we are in the middle of Serengeti and wildness.
We took lunch boxes twice when having longer safari days and were very positively surprised that the lunch was composed of proper full meal, including chicken, rise, salads and the desert. Great coffee at the end. Most other people lunching at the similar time had just sandwiches.
We would recommend the camp to everyone visiting Serengeti.

Having stayed at most camps and lodges in Serengeti we feel that Elewana Pioneer Camp is a special and outstanding one. This already starts with the arrival inside a formation of rocks that could have been used for the Lion King movie. After we got out of our safari vehicle we were guided up a walkway to the bar and lounge area where we were blown away by the views over the Serengeti. Our tent gave us an explorer feeling, as a lot of attention to detail was spent on the interior design. The bed was extremely comfortable, only the shower was a little small but absolutely sufficient for a shower after a game drive. For dinner we were spoiled with a romantic private dinner at the remote location a little bit away from the main dining area. The service and food we enjoyed was among the best we have ever received! We highly recommend to stay here!

If you want to go "glamping" or high-end "camping" consider going to Pioneer Camp in Serengeti. This is a small camp of only 6-8 tents so it is exclusive, but because of this you can be assured of a very personal and immaculate experience in which you can really savor the camp, its location, the magnificent views of the plains and the hills, and enjoy the gracious friendly staff. Alan Root was the original owner of this camp. It has been upgraded to boast top-class large tents with "Out of Africa" furnishings providing luxurious accommodations, and with a hilltop lounge in which you can spend time at sunset/sunup marveling at the view. The cuisine is outstanding, made more so by the service and personal attention of the staff. There is a herd of impala that lives in the camp, you see them all the time. You might also see lions, buffalo, wildebeest, rock hyrax, vervet monkeys and baboons, and many birds. We loved this camp and we would return to it immediately, over all of the other options we have experienced in Serengeti.

We've spent 3 unforgettable nights and the Pioneer camp and we wish we could have stayed longer.
The camp itself is tucked away in between Kopjes (rock formations), overlooking Serengeti plains.

The tent is obviously a "clamp tent". It is very spacious and offers everything you need: electricity, hot water, a toilet, a shower, and a super comfortable bed. For turndown, the staff puts a hot water bottle on each bedside, which is a nice touch for those with cold feet.

The food at the Pioneer camp was delicious and I don't know how they pull it off in a camp in the middle of the Serengeti! Both, dinner and breakfast are à la carte with a variety to chose from. The staff, of course, also accomodates any dietary restrictions.
They also provided daily lunch boxes with amazing foods; those typically consisted of a meat with vegetables, different salads, bread, desert, juices.
And while you're there, make sure you have sundowners at the rocks! They'll set you up at a rock formation with cold drinks and snacks. Definitely worth doing.

For those readers who worry about sleeping in the middle of the wild, don't be worried! After dark no guest is allowed to walk from the main area back to the tent unaccompanied. You'll always be accompanied by a guard who checks the surroundings, making sure no dangerous animals may cross your path. During the night, they are on constant patrol, making sure everyone's safe.

Another piece of advice: if you're considering going during the pandemic but have doubts, then please be assured that there is nothing the worry about. The staff wore masks, Covid protocols were enforced and they told us that they'd be vaccinated by beginning of October.
Plus, keep in mind that you'll never experience a safari this quiet again.

We've travelled while it was less busy due to Covid and we did not regret a second of that decision.
The staff spoiled us from the second we arrived until the second we left. Benjamin, our guest ambassador, went above and beyond every single day to make us feel very, very special and we cannot thank him enough for that.
Every day, whether it was for breakfast or dinner, our table was set up in a different spot, nicely decorated and providing a maximum of privacy. The staff always kept their distance to allow privacy but at the same time they were right there in case you needed something.
Justin, Benjamin and all the others: thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for everything. You make Pioneer Camp even more special than it already is!
When we left I saw the whole staff standing there and while they waves Goodbye, I felt like crying.
Pioneer Camp and its staff will keep a very special place in our hearts.

Wow! What an amazing location. Situated beneath the rocks and trees overlooking the Serengeti plains this is a tiny piece of luxury in the middle of nowhere.
After a challenging drive due to excessive. rain we arrived at this wonderful haven to be greeted by the team who could not do enough to make us feel relaxed and welcome. The lodge has amazing views and animals roam freely through the camp. The tents are spaced far enough apart to give you complete privacy and they are extremely well equipped and the bed was very comfortable.
What is even more amazing is the quality of the food produced to an excellent standard.
Rodgers and the team are great and our driver guide, John, was excellent both in his knowledge and driving skills in extremely muddy conditions.

Watching the endless plains of the Serengeti, where man first walked erect (it was actually a woman, Lucy), is like satisfying a most instinctive need.
Being our first time in a safari, we've been spolied for life: unbeatable place, the friendliest staff, and food for the most demanding!
We arrived at the property after our first game drive ever with a great guide, Logolie, and were welcomed by the staff from the camp, after which mainly Juma, John and James, but also Noel and Rodgers, made sure we were at our complete leisure. We were surprised by the wide variety and great taste of food and wines in such a remote location -kudos for the Chef!-- and what it means in logistical terms. The tent was perfect, with all the amenities and conveniences needed for a great stay. We had the BEST SLEEP at night ever, with only the sounds of the wild. And watching the sunrise from the lodge at the camp is a must and a highlight for anyone visiting the Serengeti.

This was our honeymoon, and I don’t think we could have imagined anything better. From the prompt pick up at the airport, to the game drive enroute to the camp, and then the arrival at the camp. I wasn’t sure which way to look first, I didn’t want to miss anything.
The arrival at the camp with cool towels (every time we came back) and all of the staff knowing us by name, made us feel so special. Elomi was always there to help us with anything we needed and often times before we even asked. He made sure that our morning coffee at sunrise was waiting on us on the boulder overlooking the Serengeti, my menu was always correct (food allergy), and our evening cocktail was always made with fresh ingredients.
The tents remind me of glamping in the 1920’s, they were comfortable and cozy. The availability of a bathroom and warm shower in a tent was a feature I don’t want to ever live without. Marcel kept the tent tidy and the hot water bottles in the bed after turndown was an added treat. Listening to the animals at night and feeling like you are right in adventure was so amazing no words could describe it. Dinner time was always a favorite of mine, you always had a different table giving you a different view and experience. Chef Joseph will not disappoint in his culinary talents.
John Fabian, what can I say besides extraordinary!! Starting with drinks and snacks at the airport when picking us up, until the drop off at the same airport 4 days later, he became family. He asked our favorite animals and delivered on seeing each one multiple times. We were lucky enough to see the Big 5 and the Ugly 5 and usually up close. The conversations, fact giving, comedy delivering game drives were outstanding. He knows his stuff, his English was exceptional, and has sold us on coming back in the future.
I cannot say one bad thing about this camp, safari, or overall experience of a lifetime. The people truly love what they do, everyone is grateful, and always happy.

Room: Felt very authentic for a safari experience. I loved every design element, especially the bathroom (the complementary sherry and cookies were also a nice touch). It was very clean and the bed was a california king so we had lots of room to sprawl. Could hear lots of wildlife at night but felt safe with all the windows being zipped up before bed times.

Food: One of the reasons this was my favourite lodge on our trip was the food. At lunch, they'd prepare a testing platter of bite size foods which was AMAZING and meant we could taste so many different things. Dinners were also very good -- involved 3-course meals which left us feeling satiated (and my husband very much appreciated the cheese course option). The al fresco set up with small lamps and campfire for lighting was our favourite of all the lodges we went to.

Staff: The other reason we loved this lodge was the staff. Juma (our butler) made our experience so memorable. He was always accessible to help with whatever we needed, whether it be making a margarita or setting up a sunrise breakfast surprise! He also decorated the tables with cute messages on them every meal which was so sweet. We miss him already! Charles (the lodge manager) was also really nice and checked in on us multiple times a day to make sure we were having a great time.

Game drives: Our driver Godbless was amazing. He not only knew the serengeti like the back of his hand but was able to personalize our drive so well. He picked up pretty fast that we were not the kind of guests who wanted to sit around watching/taking pictures of the same animal for hours. Instead, we were able to drive around and see LOTS of animals. He could read the animals really well so we were able to have cool close up encounters with lions, elephants, and a leopard! The lunch in the bush he prepped was also very magical. He was also in general just a really great guy and someone we enjoyed being in a car with all day.

Compared to the other lodges we stayed at, this place had very personalized service, a family like atmosphere. amazing food and beautifully designed camps. Truly one of a kind. We will be back.

The Pioneer Camp is in central Serengeti. We realized that there are different types of hotels and camps, most of them secluded and with access restricted to guests. Serengeti is really huge, so everything is far from any place. You should better contact a tour company to guide you. There are a bunch of them for different budgets and bilingual guides.

Hello from Elewana. Thank you for your email. january is not the best time to come and see the Migration as it is really only travelling through the Serengeti between early June and late August. I would very much like to share a link with you via our website but Trip Advisor does not allow us to do this, for some strange reason. However if you go to our site at Serengeti Migration Camp or Serengeti Pioneer Camp, you will see a link for the Migration route and times of the year. Check this out so that you can see the Migration path. If you are coming in January, there is so much to see at Tarangire, Ngorongoro and still in the Serengeti. It is one of my favourite times of the year as it is quieter, not as hot and a little quieter in terms of tourism, especially towards the end of the month. Should you wish to contact me (Jason Barry) please go to our contacts page on the elewana Collection website and seek me out. Then we can communicate directly. Best regards Jason barry Group Director - Elewana
