Detailed Reviews
We really enjoyed our stay with Carel and staff at Great Migration Camps. We were in the Ndutu area and saw all of the animals you could ever want to see (even the elusive cheetah!). Conversations around the fire in the evening and over the amazing dinners were fascinating. While we were there we heard lions roaring right outside the camp through two of the nights of our stay, a true bush experience! Carel, Zeb and Solomon all made us feel very safe and always accompanied us when the lions were nearby. The view of the lake from camp has the most spectacular sunsets and the sunrises through the acacia trees were a photographers dream. We even saw baby lion cubs on their first trip out with mama! The mattresses in the tents are super comfortable and the hot shower is very refreshing after dusty rides. Definitely wear closed shoes as the bugs in the grasses will bite in the evenings and be prepared to get dirty during the day. We wanted to stay in a camp away from the masses and immersed in nature we were quite satisfied with Great Migration Camps.

Before we left we had a skype call with Sally and Karel where they explained to us the best time to see the migration and how long we needed. Fantastic advice, we saw 6 crossings plus everything else the Serengetti has to offer. Karel's knowledge of the bush and the migration is unbelievable, he has grown up with it and is passionate about it. All the staff were fantastic, it was such fun and an unbelievable experience. We stayed in dome tents with very comfortable bedding. When we got back from our game drives the shower water was hot and we all enjoyed a hot shower before our nightly gnt's.

Great Migration Camp will take you where no one else will. The team is very knowledgeable and full of resources to offer unique sightings in a very down to earth way. Great Migration Camp also offers the unique possibility to discover in small group settings which allows to be 100% adaptable to what nature offers in the moment.
The connection with nature and wild life is direct, right out of the tent! And at the same time, the experience of your guides will keep you safe enough to enjoy amazing moments, immersed in nature. Their enthusiasm and love for the bush is permeable in everything they offer, it is a joy to share these moments together!

We were very lucky to experience life in the Serengeti with the absolute best in the business! Wild camping with Great Migration Camps was unlike anything I have ever experienced. It made for a truly immersive experience amplified by the sights, sounds and smells of the bush.
Carl and Zeb's knowledge of the animals and ecosystem is commendable with unforgettable wild life sightings pretty much guaranteed!
After a long day of game driving, the chefs at camp had the bush shower all set up for us and lured us to the dining tent with the most delicious smells coming from the open air kitchen.
The food was delicious and meals varied and plentiful - all meticulously planned. Every main course was preceded by a hot soup and freshly baked rolls and followed by a yummy dessert. Conversation during dinner and around the fire later easily flowed amongst the guests - craftfully held by Sally with her amazing flare and real interest in people.
we will be back!

The stay at GMC was an absolute highlight of the East Africa trip. Carel and Sally are phenomenal and knowledgeable hosts and filmmakers hosting guests alongside their work. So one is fully immersed in a real working wildlife film project. Therefore It’s not the luxury fixed installation tourist camp but a real moving camp with tents and a camping shower/loo. Alex the colourfully dressed and always jovial chef cooks up incredibly delicious meals on the campfire and there’s always a cool drink for sunset.
If you’re searching for a real bush experience, look no further.

We stayed for 3 nights with Great Migration Camps near the Ndutu area. The staff we had was excellent: Zeb, Solomon, and the incredible cook Alex. They made us feel very welcome and were always on top of things.
The only issue we had was with the bugs. There aren't any screens around the eating tent and dinner was always served at 7:30, after the sun went down. The light above the table drew in sooo many bugs (moths, dung beetles, everything) and it really ruined the eating experience for me. I feel like if they just installed some screens around the mess tent, the whole experience would be greatly improved.
The location is amazing. I love that they follow the Great Migration. We had animals come so close to our tents!

Thanks so much you two! Great to hear you loved the experience. There were an extra-ordinary amount of insects when you visited, after (and during) extensive and extended rains in the region. They were hard to escape indeed and we tried to mitigate a balance between light and bugs but moving lights to the side of the tent and eating slightly earlier, before moving to the fire. The mess tent is designed to be open to allow our guests to immerse themselves in the natural setting they find themselves in, so we purposefully avoided closing it up with screens or walls - however we will definitely consider an alternative measures during peak bug season after the rains.

The Great Migration Camp ("GMC") provides all that you need for a wonderful safari experience in the Serengeti (5 night stay at GMC). The management and staff are all very knowledgeable and capable at providing an excellent experience. We would definitely recommend the camp and the team to others looking for to experience safari at its best.
Take note that, we recommend this camp but understand that it is different than others. I have been on safari in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa and have stayed at all types of camps/lodges (from $2,000 a night per person on down). GMC is by far the best for limiting its impact on the environment and the ecosystem, with that positive comes with the limitations on personal comfort whereby there are shared toilets and showers with tents for sleeping (this is not glamping). I must say that the cots and sleeping bags provided for some of the most comfortable beds on our four week trip.
Not having some of the comforts of home may be a negative to some but it gets you real close to nature, the animals and many experiences that you will not have staying in a lodge or permanent camp. When was the last time you can say that you were kept awake by the hyenas laughing or the zebras grazing outside your tent?
The food was just as good or better than lodges that have full kitchens. Our group did not want for anything.
Our guides (Zeb and Edson) were some of the best in the business and really tried to make your safari personal and allow you to see the things that you were interested in. From experience, we expect this and they met our expectations (because we have been on safari a number of times we do have high expectations and they were fulfilled). Thank you.
Camp managers/owners Sally and Carel have vast experience and assisted us with the planning of our four week Tanzanian adventure and safari. They spent a lot of time with us tayloring the vacation to our requests and we hit all of the things we wanted during our trip. Understanding that this is very difficutl on safari given the uncontrollable factors you encounter.
All in all, this is a great camp with a great team that provides an excellent experience at an affordable price point.

This is a no 'non-sense', very rooted experience in the bush. Yet very human and fulfilling. You feel the EXPERIENCE and the LOVE for the bush. Great Migration Camps offers the opportunity, through amazing guiding and professionalism to BE with the animal and vegetal kingdoms and witness the cycles of life and death, to learn and feel what it is to belong to the bush, even for a week.
The camp caters to a small group (up to 6) , allowing for fluid and adaptable logistics. Food is great. Daily schedules give plenty of time in the bush but are not overwhelming. And a hot shower awaits you when the day is finished ! Everything is organised so that you feel at ease, the team adapts to your needs and wishes, yet ensuring safety and respect of the environment.
There will be TIME for you to witness the communication between elephants and lions. To see how the hunt is prepared by the predators. To play and rest. We participated in the first (improvised) international bush petanque tournament of the park and had great moments as a family ! Last but not least, watching the stars every night around the fire in a complete dark environment was priceless.
The team is also very knowledgeable and involved in conservation work !
Overall an amazing experience. Back as soon as I can !

I have just returned from a superb safari with Carel Verhoef and Great Migration Camps in the Kogatende area of northern Serengeti. The camp is small but comfortable and located ideally for the annual wildebeeste migration, lovely food, hot showers and great tents. I had the presence of wildebeeste and zebra munching the grass outside of my tent each night and lions roaring close by, truly wild it awakens your senses. Both Carel and Sally are brilliant hosts, great campfire company, life in the bush is what they love and they can tell some great stories over a beer. I had some great company in camp from Capetown and from USA. Game drives were long and very interesting, i had timed my visit for the migration and saw many river crossings, crocs and all. Big cats are my fav and i saw many lion plus a couple of leopard, i was very llucky. A trip to Lemai wedge was a fav, stunning scenery in pristine wilderness. If you love wildlife and camping this is a no frills camping experience which will amaze you. Thanks to both Carel Sally, also to guide and camp manager Zededia and to Clemence and Raphael the kitchen staff, brilliant thanks again to you all.

Have you dreamed of a safari in the Serengeti? If you have you probably know it will be something you only do once in your life so you want it to be amazing, mind blowing, soul enriching, a memory that lasts forever.
This is how i felt about going on safari in the Serengeti, so the tour company that i was going to book through had some pretty high expectations to live up to.
We booked our entire 10 day safari with Great Migrations Camp. Why, well they came highly recommended and when we reached out to Sally, one of the directors and hands on owners, she just got it. She heard the excitement and dreams in my conversations with her both on the phone and email.
She put together an itinerary for us that 100% matched our requirements. Variety of regions (Tanzania village, Ngorongoro Crater, Central Serengeti and Northern Serengeti) accomodation in our budget that offered simplicity, a little bit of luxury, nature at it best, perfect daily distances travelled, as foodies some amazing meals, but best of all exceptional guides that meant we consider ourselves to be the luckiest people in the world as our animal sightings were EPIC.
So you also dream of a safari in Tanzania reach out to Sally and tell her your dreams -- she will help make them come true.
Thank you GMC - Sally, Carel, Mashine, Zeb, Alex and Francis. Tanzania will forever hold a special place in my heart ❤
