This resort is nice enough. The rooms are clean and have nice bathrooms and comfortable beds. The unit we were in was spacious. It has good TV options. The pool and beach areas are nice although the water at the beach was not very clean. They maintain the property well. Those are the pros. The cons are that there were very few people staying there, perhaps because it was low season (March). The food at the restaurant was just okay and the staff seemed a little indifferent. We had to ask several times for towels for the pool and had to wait a good while to get them. The store didn't seem to be open a lot. They only allow you to kayak with a "guide" and there were group activities offered only on weekends. The resort is isolated and that might be a good thing because the town of Puerto Barrios is not very appealing and we heard it is not safe, though we had no bad experiences. We entertained ourselves by taking the boat to Livingston and Rio Dulce and ate in restaurants in town at night. They were nice enough, but we were almost the only people in them. Not a festive atmosphere. If you want a very quiet vacation sitting by the pool or beach, this could be the place for you. It did have nice pool features for children but they did not interest us. We left a few days early and went to Antigua which was much more interesting and fun. Do not under any circumstances, decide to drive from Guatemala City to this resort. It was a harrowing experience which we felt very fortunate to survive. If you are going to drive in the Puerto Barrios area, be careful of people who step into the road, refuse to get out of it, and scooters going every which way with little kids and babies hanging off them. Other than the main thoroughfares, roads are just about non existent. Mostly nice people though.…
It is a very beautiful Hotel. Great ambiance however the bathroom can use some upgrading and cleaning. House keeper can put more initiative in her work by replacing all cards and books with hotel information. Enjoyed the music while bathing in the pool at night. Was given a broken clothes iron when I asked to borrow one. Room had a musty scent when we first entered which cleared away after AC came on. Nonetheless, I had two restful nights; comfortable bed!
Stayed here two separate nights, and the experience was good both times. Prices were fair (for American budget), rooms clean, air conditioning strong, and front desk helpful with extra pillows and instructions on how to operate said air conditioning. I'm aware of many Guatemalan friends who choose this place when in town, and I'd definitely stay here again. Mid-range in price, so affordable but nice. We did ask for rooms near the back of the property and away from any restaurant/bars, and had plenty of quiet. Hotel does front onto a main road, so that's my special tip for you! Also had the breakfast buffet in the restaurant (free with the room) - food was fine, service very nice and decor pleasant and well-done.
Spent 2 nights here with a room on the 2nd floor. No elevators so be prepared to lug your suitcase up two flights of stairs. The staff were friendly and carried my suitcase for me. The room ac was off making it smell dusty but got better once the ac was turned on. My room had two beds and don't know how often the bed spread was changed or cleaned. Saw some questionable stains on one of beds. The shower had hot water so no issues there. The staff in the bar/ restaurant were nice and attentive however I had to pass on what was offered for breakfast. Other people seemed to enjoy breakfast so maybe I am overly cautious. My room overlooked the pool. In the evening, they turned the music up which I clearly heard from my room. The hotel in near a busy port so traffic noise also present. The hotel has two wifi hotspots but I barely got a signal from my room This was ok to stay at for 1-2 nights if you had business at the port. …
I made a reservation for 3 rooms and was told the charge per room would be $103, BUT they ended up charging my credit card $137 per room. Now they claim that there is nothing they can do to fix this. This is an absolute embarrassment to Guatemala that people do this to tourists, more than 2 times their regular daily rate of $60/day.
Hands down the rudest staff and worst check in experience of my holiday and we have been away for 4 months. We arrived (walk in) at 11pm at night after a 10 hour drive from Semuc Champey with our 70 year old parents and were treated so badly that my girlfriend went from furious to in tears in seconds. The rooms were not cheap ($75 USD) but after such a big drive I couldn't go any further. The music at the bar pumped music till after 1am the TV didn't work then we woke up for breakfast and the staff were just as rude and un accomodating. We went to talk to management this morning to complain and apparently there is no manager around and the girl at the front desk lied about her name as when we explained how we were treated on arrival there was no one by the name she gave us. I would confidently say that the worst service I have had in 4 months of travelling. I would never recommend this place to anyone!…
We have already stayed several times there and really like the hotel. It's not special, even not close to the beach. But it's nice and worth the price. The rooms are simple, the food is good and I also like the service. The hotel has a small pool, free Wifi, and it's close to the city. I give 5 stars considering it's a three star hotel with good food and service. Don't expect more neither less.
We stumbled upon this hotel after driving around Puerto Barrios looking for a safe, more modern hotel. Puerto Barrios is usually used as a jumping off point for people going to Livingston, Belize and Rio Dulce. We stayed here both before and after our boat trip across to Livingston. The hotel is nestled in a relatively quiet area, but right on the main highway as you come into Puerto Barrios. Rooms are very clean with good air conditioning and mini refrigerators. There is a nice pool and restaurant and the reasonable room rate includes the breakfast buffet. Besides the good accommodations, we really appreciated the friendly, helpfulness of several people at Hotel Puerto Libre. Veronica, one of the managers speaks very good English and helped us make a couple calls to make some changes in our itinerary...having local Spanish speaking assistance was really nice. Byron, (we jokingly called him Lord Byron) one of the owners, also speaks English was delightful...giving us advice and helping us arrange transportation to the port for our boat trip. He also allowed us to park our car at the hotel while we were in Livingston. We felt lucky to have the assistance and safety of this hotel. There is a handy, huge shopping center right across the highway from the hotel.…
It's right off of a main street, so the rooms facing that way tend to be noisy. But if you want a room away from the street, you won't have wifi in your room. But you will have the chirping of salamanders to lull you to sleep at night! The front desk asks for your marital status & other personal information on check in. If you put "n/a" and smile, they shouldn't give you too much of a hard time. It's convenient to have a place to eat right on the premises, and there's a pool & place to go dancing. Like most rural places, don't eat anything that might have been washed in water (salads). Or do, but bring Pepto Bismol. The chicken soup is good. They have a frequent traveler program, but it's only if you visit every month or every couple of months, so it might not be worth it. My room was musty & the bed was uncomfortable, and I sat in the lobby to be able to connect to the wifi, but this is probably the best place in Izabal.…
I stayed two nights here, and participated in an event in one of the meeting rooms. The hotel represented excellent value in my opinion, with a clean and comfortable room, good airconditioning, OK food in the restaurant, and included breakfast. I was very happy, and would stay here again.
