Nestled in a quiet corner of Florida's Heartland, The Hotel Jacaranda is the picture of Southern repose. Built in the 1920s and listed on the National Historic Register, Avon Park's "gracious lady" boasts high ceilings and quiet hallways. In years gone by, the Jacaranda played hostess to the likes of Babe Ruth and Clark Gable.

This hotel opened in 1926 and the rooms still have the same charming fixtures! It was very grand in it's day and being there takes you back. In the evening we sat in the "mall" area and played cards. I would love to see all the shops operational again! Had our dinner in the dining room--buffet-style. Deserts were especially lovely! Only a 30 minute drive to Bok Tower Gardens from here.

Hotel's Favourite
The Hotel Jacaranda is a beautiful historic hotel with a long history. The decor/furniture makes you feel like you are traveling back in time. The staff is friendly, and it's fun walking around the hotel looking at the decor and antiques. The hotel is decorated beautifully for Christmas and there are a lot of great photo opportunities there.

Along with friends we went to the Hotel Jacaranda for their dinner buffet. During the pandemic many local businesses are struggling. When we arrived there were only 5 other diners plus us for a total of 8 guests. The buffet was well stocked with fresh salad bar, soup and buffet including fried chicken, fried fish, pork ribs, pork tenderloin in sauce, bread/ beans, black eye peas among the choices. Server was prompt and efficient, taking our drink order as soon as we were seated. This was possible be the best meal I have ever had in the past 6 to 7 years we have been dining at the restaurant. Desserts were varIed, fresh and delicious. Fresh strawberry short cake with fresh whipped cream is still a favorite. If you live in the central Florida I highly recommend this fine establishment. It is run by South Florida State College’s of culinary arts dept. Please support this delightful establishment during the pandemic if possible.

In June, we stumbled upon Avon Park. The Jacaranda caught our eye. What was this place? And why is this town so charming yet rather empty? We read up on the history of this town and the hotel — and for our first wedding anniversary took a chance and booked room no. 215. Well...? It’s not for everyone but we loved it. It is 96 years old. It is safe, clean and the “mini suites” are huge, with high ceilings and original fixtures. The rates were very low compared to what if I had to guess they would be. And the service was very friendly and loved the vintage 1925 elevator. Now, the room: Facing Main Street is surprisingly noisy on a Saturday, like South Beach with no clubs but lots of vehicles and a train. Sunday night? Much quieter. The bed? Firm. AC/heat? Good. Hot water? In the shower, in need of a new head and tub scrub. No hot water in vintage sinks. Otherwise, the experience was unique, positive and a great memory. The hotel Xmas decorations were also up when we arrived. Other notes: “free breakfast” is a basic bar a la Hampton Inn The Grand Buffet? Sorry, not our type of food. Eighteen East across the street when open is our jam, as is Market 27 a few miles away. Overall: 4 of 5 stars for a historic weekend we loved!

Thank you for your review and staying with us for your Anniversary. I understand the buffet isn't for everyone. and can never go wrong at 18 East or Market 27. They are both great places.

The Hotel Jacaranda is definitely special - it feels like stepping back in time into the old Florida. The room was spacious, windows could be openend. Bathroom appliances directly from the 1930s - might need to be slightly restored, but they work and give a feeling of authenticity. A highlight was the terrace on the 2nd floor, facing Main Street, with chairs and tables, it is perfect for an aperitiv or an after dinner drink (you have to bring the drink yourselves, there is no service). For dining, just go across the street to 18 East, a nice neighbourhood restaurant.
