We stayed three nights recently and enjoyed every moment, despite experiencing three short hailstorms in one day - that just restricted our reading and snack-fueled wine consumption in one or other shady spot in the grounds on that particular day. We shall return with family or friends. Every citizen should make clean-air sortees of this nature, to the world of milk and green fields, to relax and unwind. We only once drove off in the car to secure some pottery my wife had discovered, but the midlands meander is close by, as is the Drakensberg, for those short on books and good wine. The employee, Thembani - who is so much more than just a "jack of all trades" (his own words) - provided wonderful breakfasts and a marvelous dinner, on request! At the slightest sign of a drop in temperature he had a fire or heaters in place and was discretely attentive. The gardens are well-maintained and the graveyard interesting, especially for a midlands lad like me. Special mention should also be made of the interesting way in which the building has been adapted, the decor and the attention to detail in this fascinating, homely, well-appointed retreat.

Loved every bit of our weekend here. This little church, built in 1906, has been thoughtfully converted into a sanctuary for the stressed and weary city folk. The attention to detail is outstanding - from the comfortable beds, high quality Egyptian cotton linen to the wonderful Thembani who made sure the fire was roaring when we arrived. He’s also a world-class chef. Dude, that Peanut Butter ice-cream. Oh my word.Did not want for anything. We’ll definitely be back and back again. Thank you, Paul.

I took my best girlfriends here for a getaway before I tied the knot.
It really is an amazing experience. Beautifully decorated with luxurious furnishings and bedding. This little church was built 1906 and has a grave yard attached. Lovingly maintained gardens and the blue skies and dranksberg make for a great backdrop.
Will definitely be back with my husband.
Lots to see and do in the area if you want to explore the nearby towns.

This is one of the most unique and beautiful places we've ever stayed. The retreat is a rebuilt Anglican church, which still retains much of its original church interior. There is a plaque honoring those of the parish who fought in WWI. There is a lectern (now disguising the heating stove). The stained glass windows remain, and the architecture is beautifully set off by the furnishings chosen to decorate the retreat.

There is a graveyard out the back of the retreat, which can be visited. It is a fascinating look at South African history.

You can also book dinner at the retreat, which we did. Thembani is a true chef, as the food was well presented and amazingly delicious.

The retreat is booked by one group at a time, so you have it to yourself while you are there.

I stayed in St Andrews Retreat in the Natal Midlands in April of 2017. It was a fantastic experience. We loved the beauty of the building, the fact that the owners only rent out the property to one couple or more than one couple (should they all know each other) and the food was awesome. The meal prepared by the Butler Thembani was one of the best meals I have ever had (rate it 11 out of 10, that's how good it was)
