Witsieshoek is an excellent place to explore the Amphitheatre and other hikes around the area. Having read some negative reviews, I was a bit worried. However, in the end I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the lodge is. The staff (and especially Nelson) were incredibly helpful, attentive, and knowledgable about day hikes in the area. We paid for a standard room and ended up with an incredible view of the Amphitheatre. The restaurant is cozy and the prices absurdly cheap. The menu is limited but Witsieshoek is not a 5-star hotel, it's a mountain lodge for hikers. Room prices are steep relative to somewhere like Thendele but I would argue that their location is even better at Witsieshoek so you're paying for that. The rooms are really nice though and the beds are ginormous. The electricity cut out once or twice for maybe a minute but that was all. Showers had hot water and the room walls are very thick. Make sure you book your place in the shuttle to Sentinel Car Park early and arrive 15mins before it's due to depart because you might get bumped off. It's well worth paying R160 for the bumpy 25min ride as it's not a particularly nice route to walk and don't even try and drive it yourself unless you have a proper 4x4 (I'm talking about a Land Rover or equivalent, not an SUV). The road to Sentinel Car Park is really bad and not worth destroying your car to save R160.

We really enjoyed our time at Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge. The location was perfect and the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating of all of our needs or requests. The included breakfasts are well worth it and make the perfect fuel for any planned hikes during your time there. The lights outside stay on throughout the night and can shine quite brightly into the rooms - so I just suggest bringing along your eye masks for sleeping.

We booked 2 nights to stay in the lodge in a Sentinel view room with the intention of hiking the Gudu and Tugula falls. Given the remote location the facilities at the hotel are limited but there is a restaurant, small bar and lounge area in the main reception area. Parking is available outside the Sentinel rooms. Our Sentinel room had a view albeit behind a raised bank area to stop the worst of the wind. The room was modern and clean with a good bed and large bathroom. The furnishings are colourful and functional. The lighting is very limited in the bathroom.

When we arrived, the weather was fine but it was extremely windy and quite cold. The room was droughty due to some small gaps around the windows but there was a panel heater, fan heater and electric blankets provided, which aided in warming the room up a bit. The electricity was running on a generator during our stay as there was an issue with the mains supply, they were working on fixing so there was some outage during the night.

The restaurant was really good given the remoteness of the lodge and there were enough choices at breakfast and dinner to cater everyone. We were very impressed by our waiter (Thabo) who was really friendly and enthusiastic and clearly enjoyed his job.

After arriving in the early afternoon, we hiked to Gudu falls in the afternoon directly from the hotel which took a couple of hours and was easy hiking with nice views down to the falls. Fortunately, we did the hike as the following day we had a guided hike to the Tugala falls planned. When we woke up the weather had rolled in and it was windy, foggy to the extent of around 10 metres of visibility and extremely cold (1 degree and -7 degrees at the top of the hike). Given there was little chance of any views and the extreme weather we felt it would be too dangerous to hike so decided to cancel which was very disappointing.

Rather than stay in the room all day we decided to leave and find a hotel closer to out next destination in order to move away from the weather. When we checked out, the receptionist advised us that the manager had offered to waive the cost of the 2nd night as we were not staying. This was a very nice gesture but as the weather was not the hotel’s fault, we decided to pay anyway but appreciated the offer. Although the weather can be fickle in the area is definitely worth staying at the lodge if you are keen to try the hiking.

Very nice location when the weather is good, we were unlucky in this respect (only had good views late one late afternoon during a 2 nights stay). This was by far compensated by the excellent food served by very attentive waiters from the local community in the restaurant. Highly recommended!

Such a lovely lodge up in the mountains at the top of the Mahai Valley. Eerie, misty mornings/evenings when the mist rolls in. Gorgeous hikes and walks ranging from easy to moderate, straight from the lodge. Great to come back to a big, hot shower and comfy mattress, and a delicious meal served by gentle staff (we loved Richard & Tumelo).
We brought our own wine for which we were charged corkage, and the meals were very reasonable priced.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to experience the spa as we left reasonably early each morning and the spa opens later. We found the information around hikes in the area (maps, information, distances, difficulty level etc.) lacking, but were able to figure it out by combining some information on their website with knowledge one of our party held from precious experience in the area.

I hope to visit again, and will certainly highly recommend the lodge to others.

We had a very pleasant stay at Witsiehoek Mountain Lodge. The staff was very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The rooms and also the big common dining hall / living room are clean and very comfortable. Food was very good, too! The location of the lodge itself is fantastic, right there in the mountains, very nice view and fresh air. The lodge also organized a shuttle for us to and from the Sentinel Car Park, since it can only be reached with a 4x4 car, which was very convenient and good value also. We could sort out the payment including the small hiking fee at the lodge, which was very convenient. Plus the driver is a very nice guy. We can definitely recommend staying there!

I arrived Friday afternoon 18 December 2020. Comfortable accommodation, magnificent location, high up on a ridge, views of Natal Drakensberg on one side, Free State of the other. There is a paved road all the way to the lodge. I found staff friendly and helpful, food was good and plentiful. Pre-arrival room servicing was not so good, when I took a shower after arrival the shower gel dispenser was empty, the shampoo dispenser was broken. Also no teaspoon was provided with tea and coffee supplies. These faults were promptly rectified when I reported them. A nice touch was that they gave me a box of extra muffins to take home with me.

The only good thing about that lodge is the location if you want to hike from Sentinel Car Park. The rooms are full of stale air and furnished tasteless . The cigarette smoke of the other rooms comes in through the bathroom's windows (we later found out that it was the manager smoking in her room). The bathroom's window go to a small chimney in the inside of the so called bungalows.

The menu of the restaurant is very small and the food disgusting. The waitress was mostly ignoring us.

There was no room service. When we asked why, they said it was due to Covid19. And they had to obey these rules. On the other hand no one of the staff was wearing a mask.
Communication via email was complicated as emails weren't anwered.

There was no electricity so the bathrooms couldn't be used after a dayhike as it was dark inside.

No WiFi Connection in the rooms.

The price is much too high for such a lousy service.

NEVER EVER AGAIN!

Recently stayed at witsieshoek in the sentinel facing rooms. I would highly recommend requesting rooms 2,3,6,7 as they are a little brighter and have more windows which look onto the amphitheatre.

The rooms are spacious and clean. Additional blankets are provided for those cold winter nights. The rooms are well insulated and also have both an oil heater and fan heater.

A bar fridge is available in the room to store your own drinks / food items.

The staff at the lodge are extremely friendly and accommodating - special mention to Lydia who is one of the most pleasant waitresses I have ever met . Even though the restaurant doesn’t cater halaal meals, the staff assisted us by heating our food up and arranging a braai stand for us outside of the room.

The lunch and dinner menu is limited, we tried the deserts which proved to be delicious.

The lodge assists with the booking of guides for hikes and transfers to the sentinel peak car park. I would highly recommend that both options be utilized to ensure a pleasant experience as the road to the car park is rutted and the weather in the area unpredictable.

Two hikes which should not be missed is the tugela falls hike (12km return trip) and the hike to Gudu falls via Mahai falls returning back via the crack (14km).

Cell reception in the area is spotty and the wifi whilst available in the rooms is sketchy at best.
