This is definitely one of the most unique hotel i have ever stayed in. The view is just out of this world, especially during sunrise and sunset, and every single detail in this hotel is just impeccable! But what makes it even more special is the hospitality of all the staff. Elizabeth, aunty Yuna, Austin, and all Sonop staff definitely took very good care of us and made sure we have everything we need. We left with very fond memories of our stay at Sonop.

We stayed two nights in this hotel. This lodge has a colonial style which spans around the whole place giving it an unique touch. It is built in a truly unique way on top of granite rocks in one of the most extraordinary places I have ever seen. The common areas are splendid. The decorations from the colonial area make you feel like you are in the beginning of the 20th century. The view from the main area is breathtaking and you can see both the sunrise and sunset. There is also a very well equipped gym room and you can go for a run around the lodge if you want to. The lodge also has a cigar room with a nice pool table. The rooms are in tents but are very well heated. They are comfortable and well decorated but quite dark. Yet, we spent most of our time in the commons areas. The food is very good. For lunch the chef brings out a platter from which you can eat a wide variety of dishes. At night there is a 5 course menu. Note that the breakfast isn't a buffet but is very good. Moreover, the staff is amazing. Very friendly ,helpful and efficient. We did the e-bicycle tour and sunset tour. Both were really nice. I would most definitely recommend the sunset tour. We went up a mountain with a car and the view was incredible. This hotel is a must if you come to Namibia. It may be hard to reach by car but it is absolutely worth it. It is located in one of the most beautiful and out of this world places.

This is hands down one of the most unique lodges in Africa if not the world. The architectural brilliance is breathtaking from the very first glimpse as we drive toward the towering pile of boulders. From the initial fun drive up to reception to the beautifully appointed "rooms", the attention to detail and aesthetic is perfection. The feeling of enjoying a cocktail and playing pool with the vast, empty dessert as a backdrop is indescribable. The meals were delicious and well presented, staff were professional and efficient. The pool could have been warmer but was refreshing after a hot dessert day. Highly recommend an outdoor movie (with popcorn!) and a walk around the vast plains to really appreciate the sunset and solitude. Be aware there are MANY steps to navigate between rooms and the main pavilion/facilities. It is not accessible and not suitable for the infirm or very young. 5/5 stars, highly recommended.

I am writing this review very belatedly as my husband and I visited nearly a year ago. We have been fortunate to have been on many safaris in both southern and Eastern Africa and feel that the location of this lodge cannot be beaten. The arrival really contributes to the wow factor (I won’t share any more than that because I don’t want to spoil the surprise!) It’s truly off the beaten path (even by Namibian standards) and it’s setting can only be described as magical. Set into a rock formation and looking out onto the desert, visitors can feel truly intrepid while staying in the most luxurious comfort of 1920s era Safari tents filled with whimsical items. You can lie in your bed gazing out at the desert drinking a delicious tea and watching the colours change as the sun sets, before heading to the fabulous cocktail bar and sitting down to a multi-course candle-lit dinner. Afterwards you can head down to the pool area to watch a movie under the stars (and you probably will have never seen so many) while the staff bring you popcorn and drinks. Perfection.

This is singularly, the most beautifully located and appointed luxury lodge in southern Africa. The East African safari theme is authentic & very comfortable. Attention to detail unparalleled. Cuisine, of world-class standards. Staff are professional & friendly. My wife & I loved the warm, genuine smiles of staff members. The surrounding mountains are dramatic, especially at sunrise & sunset. Suggestions would be being innovative about things to do, in addition to sunrise/sunset drives & sessions in the spa. Whilst this is the perfect setting to relax, kick back & do nothing other than relax between meals, management may want to think about unique activities to offer patrons, e.g. stargazing sessions in one of the darkest skies in the world, guided walks in the surrounding mountains & koppies, history sessions of Namibia & its various people, landscape & night photography lessons - are there any rock art places in the area? etc. Another suggestion to consider, is including the cost of sunset & sunrise drives in the daily rate. It feels pedantic to charge an additional ZAR1 100 pp for a sunset drive on top of the daily rate. Perhaps work the cost of these activities into the daily rate? I know this is standard practice at other Namibian lodges, but this may be an opportunity to do something different in the case of Zannier? All in all, a memorable experience & a luxury lodge I will easily recommend to discerning travellers.

We drove down from Windhoek, arrived at the lodge in the late afternoon. Collected by the hotel and taken up the amazing wooden ramp to the hotel… and was immediately in love with the whole thing. The incredible views and the amazing tented bedroom suites set the tone for the visit. Other reviews already point out the bathroom problem of showering in a high top bath and the wooden staircases over/ around the rocks… this so negated by the service, friendly and determined to please. This hotel is OFF GRID. It still provides aircon in the rooms, plentiful water and ( somehow) delicious foods and plentiful wines. Thank god we are some of the first people to find this… it deserves to be swamped with customers for the 11 bedrooms that it has to offer. Don’t miss this, you will regret it

Yes there are no words for describing this place: magic, amazing, unforgettable… Such a special place in the most amazing landscape my only regret is that I didn’t stay longer. Now for a start the beautiful lodges built on the boulders make it for a strikingly arrival; then the “joyride” that take you up there will make you smile and the view from the top will take your breath away and will stay with you forever. The Lounge Area is just taken from Out Of Africa, the Pool Area from Architectural Digest and the 150 plus steps will keep you fit and out of breath!!! The food is very good and plenty of it the lodges are to die for and the service…My God…they are one better than the other: charming and attentive and always there…I was so sad to leave…Paradise!!! Now just a quick consideration: I love the interior of Colonial Africa and what i like more is the fact that the interior decorator, probably, went to European auction houses bought all “our” unwanted brown furniture for a pittance shipped here and…the magic is done!!! One of the few places in the world where I will go back in a heartbeat!

Sonop is a Zannier Hotel in the remote Hardap region of the Namibia. One takes a small plane from Windhoek to reach this unique luxury tent lodge and believe me, the quiet and stark beauty have an incredible otherworldly feel unlike few places we have been. Before I sing its praises, let me get one bothersome issue we had out of the way first. We arrived at the end of the dry season and the aquifers serving the resort were nearly depleted. A well pump collapsed or stopped working right after we arrived and that left us and the camp with very little water. There were maybe a handful of guests staying there at the time (September), but we had to go a few days without a decent shower. Water had to be brought to us to bathe and flush the toilets. Maybe we’re used to being pampered but when staying at a luxury resort, showering is part and parcel of a satisfying stay. Zannier management is looking into this issue and I hope it is rectified because Sonop is such a beautiful and unique experience. It is a special place in every sense of the word. The location is positively dramatic and of another world or time. The luxury tents are built atop a massive mountain of boulders and you reach the encampment area on top via a golf cart that ferries you up a winding wooden ramp. Once on top, the main lodge tent and all the individual tents are connected to one another via a series of wooden parapets and walkways. Many of these walkways are quite long and at times, precariously perched. If you have a fear of heights, you might find some of the tents to be a stretch to reach. Acrophobic? Pick a tent perched closer to the main lodge. At night, after your dinner, you must carry a flashlight to see your way back. The walkway is lit, but some parts are not well illuminated and it can be easy to misplace your footing. As for the tents, they are comfortable, air conditioned, and the bed is quite comfortable. I was, however, not so fond of the shower. It is a raised clawfoot bathtub with an attached shower extension and curtains one draws around for privacy and to contain the spraying water. As a tall person, I felt awkward and unsteady standing in the tub, trying to maneuver around without splashing water through the curtains. It also didn’t help that right next to the shower was a net window that allows one to look directly from the shower fifty feet down the boulder surface below the tent. If you like taking a bath, this arrangement is not an issue. The first tent we occupied was at the far edge of the lodge, near the pool and spa. But because the water pressure there was so low, we asked to be moved closer to the lodge and down the boulder hill. Something magical came of this move. In the evening and at night, we could now hear the barking geckos! What a unique and special experience! Their song was beautiful and unlike anything I’ve ever heard. The water issue created an experience for us we might have otherwise not been able to experience. Other parts of the resort include the spa, pool and small gym. The masseur, Frans, who gave my sister several massages did an excellent job and she was thoroughly pleased. The pool is on the small side and not always heated, but it offers beautiful views of the scenery around Sonop. It’s the perfect spot to while away a couple hours while also soaking in the amazing landscape. Their gym is very small with only a few pieces of equipment and was not well air-conditioned. I’d definitely recommend going on a horseback ride as the time and pace offer more opportunity to appreciate the world around you. The staff was incredibly kind and because of the water dilemma, they really went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. One evening, we were treated to a surprise open-fire feast in the desert. The experience was pure delight. The food was excellent (as it was for every single meal at Sonop) and the staff sang to us by the roaring fire. The beautiful voices we heard that night will never be forgotten. Lazarus, our guide, and Helena who served us meals were extraordinary in their kindness and desire to make us feel happy. The rest of the staff are also remarkably hospitable. Lazarus was a wealth of knowledge when it came to our wildlife viewing and he dutifully awoke in the wee hours to drive us 4+ hours to see sunrise at Sossusvlei. His drives to sunrise and sunset views for drinks and snacks really let us appreciate the exquisite and enchanting beauty of Sonop and environs. We witnessed some of the most beautiful sunsets we have ever seen. The area surrounding Sonop has abundant birdlife but mammals are not as evident and thus, we also saw no predators. One doesn’t come to Sonop for big game safaris as is typical of most African vacations, one seeks Sonop as a destination to escape the often unpleasant aspects of our modern and harried lives, for it is truly a place to savor tranquility and visual splendor.
