What an amazing experience staying underground. Di you are a great host. We were a group of 6 couples spread across the 2 houses. Well appointed homes, plenty of equipment in the kitchens, clean and tidy. Great value for money.
Di's Dugout is such an amazing place to stay in Coober Pedy. You get the true dugout experience, but with all of the modern conveniences. Laundry, clothes line, coffee machine, WiFi, comfy beds, great showers etc. Di was so friendly, there's even a small noodling area for the kids in the front yard! We wished we could stay longer, highly, highly recommended!
An awesome place to experience living underground. Fully equipped kitchen, coffee machine, board games, Netflix, and beautiful decor. Di herself was very welcoming and has great knowledge of Coober Pedy. Would highly recommend.
Di's Dugouts is the place to stay! Such an amazing experience staying underground, but even better is the welcoming hospitality by Di. You feel like you are at home the minute you walk through the door. Our son had a great time noodling for Opal on the property and Di gave some great tips for places to visit in the town. Thankyou Di for making our trip so memorable!
Great experience in a dugout - something different than a normal motel. Pleasant surprise - spacious And well equipped. 2 bedroom dugout, 2 nd bathroom lounge, tv cooking bbq The dugout was very clean and tidy and Di was very welcoming I have no hesitation in saying give it a go
After about eight hours on the road from Adelaide we rolled into Coober Pedy, where we were greeted by a lovely woman Di who moved to the dessert from Queensland decades ago purely for opal mining. For more than 20 years Di lived in this underground, hand dugout made by Jacob, a Canadian man, in the 70s. Di, who only made the dugout open to the public in 2017, gave us the ‘lay of the land’ like every good, country host does. Di sent us to visit a little, old Greek lady, Stella, whose family has been in the opal business since they immigrated in the early 70s. They planned to stay three months and originally lived in a bus for more than a year with no air conditioning during high 40-degree weather. They fought the flies, dust and passed the times without running water but their ‘fever’ - as they call it - for opals influenced their decision to stay. And she’s a bloody good opal cutter and business woman, managing to sell Ali two jewelry pieces. Stellar sent us on our way with free brochures, fridge magnets and rough opals as souvenirs to remember her by. We were lucky to then witness a perfect, pink sunset and on the advice of Di, went out for dinner at Umbertos where We were told to wish her other customer Jo a happy birthday. It was just suppose to be a rest stay on the way to one of the most magical places in Alice Springs but this kind-hearted woman Di with her local knowledge and passion made our little stay oh that much enjoyable and, oh so Australian. If you get the chance, check out Di’s Dugout…
Fabulous place...cannot be faulted. Beautifully decorated inside with thoughtful touches everywhere from fluffy giant towels to luxury soaps and welcome chocolates and coffee. Well equipped kitchen and quality fittings everywhere. Spacious and interesting to discover all the different rooms. Books, games, plenty of TV's. Toys for children.
Fantastic quirky house built into the side of the hill in Cooper Pedy, with it’s own Carport(high 2.7m) good for our car, Easy to fine and kept well. You can see the owner puts love into her work. The dug out for us was a chance to experience the way 50% of Cooper Pedy residents live. It slept quite a few comfortably....originally another couple was going to be with us...so ours was a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom Dugout. The rooms were nicely separated too, so you had your own space if needed. 1 room had a couch in it as well so you could sit and read by the window by yourself. The Dug out also had a well equiped kitchen, supplied tea and coffee plus other things, big dining table, large lounge/TV area, and outdoor verandah with outdoor setting and bbq. Thanks Di for the great stay and sharing your Dug out with us, we loved the experience!…
We were a bit cautious about staying in an underground home. The home was very comfortable, just like home. A full kitchen, a washing machine and one and a half bathrooms. The property was very clean inside despite the town being dusty outside. Its a km or so outside town, but this is no problem with a car. The owner's daughter was very helpful. We couldn't fault the property. Thank you, Di.
Di was such an amazing host & her home was just stunning! The kids didn't want to leave & we all had a fab nights sleep. Di was very accommodating, with us staying only for 1 night on our way to Uluru & another single night on our way home to Adelaide. As a group of 9 (4 adults & 5 kidlets) we would all like to thank her for her wonderful hospitality! We would totally recommend staying here! ❤❤
