After doing Fayes home and mine tour we then went to see the Opal Cave to purchase some Opal. Faye started this business back in the 60s. Digging it first and then making the shop. Current owners have since extended the shop. What lovely people Tina and Dietar who love a chat and can help you with any Opal enquires. No worries if a small or large purchase just pleased to see you. A1 service.
Nice store, interesting history about the Ope Mine and local culture. There is a top lookout place that people could check out. We Only checked out the store section but not the hotel. Bought two stickers with Coober Pedy sign on it.
We visit The Opal Cave today and found the layout of the shop was beautiful and the Opal jewellery was well displayed. Whilst we didn't actually buy anything we were given great service and lots of advice. The sales lady Carol was very friendly & helpful when we went back into the shop later in the day for some help. I would certainly recommend a visit. We thought things were well priced.
It is quite an interesting place. It is located in the heart of Cooper Pedy. The complex includes the underground bunkhouse, as they call, which seems basic but sufficient . Besides being a hostel the Opal Cave has also an underground commercial area. The store has a lot of interesting souvenirs for sale, opal jewelry, even DVDs of Coober Pedy based movies like "Pitch Black" and "Red Planet". The wreck of the space ship from "Pitch Black" is nearby the Opal Cave as is the famous statue of the Miner. Above the Opal Cave digout you can walk on the hill top turned into a nice lookout with a beautiful view of the area. If you want to stay overnight and door is closed there is a phone number displayed.
The manager of this place should lose his job big time he is very rude , not helpful at all , the place needs a makeover big time new sheets n new pillows if u stay at this u might up with bedlice or bed mites stay away from this place
Just as it said, no frills, clean tidy and a nice break from the heat. Facilities are clean and fresh, although more showers would be handy as they get crowded when busy. That said you get what pay for. Good night's sleep.
We stayed here as part of our Groovy Grape tour and stayed in one of the bunk rooms with the rest of our tour group. There were many alcoves with two bunkbeds in each. Each alcove had a curtain for privacy. Of course - the room was completely underground! The room was clean and the beds were comfortable - we had a peaceful night's sleep. We also had access to kitchen facilities and sitting space for breakfast. It is located right beside the Umoona Opal Mine & Museum and is a very short walk into town.
Very pleasant serviced stay. Slept like i havent for years. For $25.00 per person per night. Why wouldnt you check this beauty out. So awesome. Loved the opals. Museum, and Fayes Underground home was great. Friends of ours parked thier caravan and stayed the night also. So check out Tom and Debbie. Great new managers.
