We decided at last minute to go away ,and found this Game Lodge not too far from JHB.
With the hustle and bustle of JHB, this is the place to just relax and veg.

Thanks to Betsy for making our booking easy , answering calls and emails with prompt responses.
We arrived from our drive , with a much needed welcome drink from Charity, and check in was easy and stress free.

We had the Presidential Suite, and OMG, it was an amazing room, with our own pool, outside shower with 2 shower heads and privacy,no next door neighbors, and a beautiful view of the bush!! we were truly surprised and blessed.

Before our Game Drives we would pre -order our dinner meal. We were there for 3 nights, and each morning and afternoon we would go on a game drive.
The game drives were great and informative, and each stop over for our drinks was at a different area on the property to enjoy the scenery.

Dinner was always very relaxed, and we never felt rushed, and were hardly interrupted , so we could just sit and enjoy.
The Zwahili Staff respected our privacy and this I was truly grateful, for us to have a relaxed time away and enjoy nature.

The only downfall was that there is no aircon, in the room , our first night was very uncomfortable, even with the fans supplied, it just circulated the hot air in the room, and you could not open the windows in case of moths and insects, even with the Mosquito net.
Other than that, I rate this a 99.9% of awesomeness!!

Thanks again to the Owner and Staff of Zwahili Private Game Lodge, we will back.

Took my wife here for our 30th wedding anniversary. It is not a big 5 reserve (none of the big 5), but if you don’t mind that it makes for a great romantic bush getaway. The food was excellent, but what really made the stay for us was the staff who were unbelievably attentive and friendly. We were there for 5 days (longer than most guests), but had a blast. We stayed in a tented room (has a thatch roof) for three days, which was lovely. However, it was really hot in the afternoons (in fairness the ambient temperature was over 35 every day we were there). We also spent 2 nights in the Mandela suite, which was lovely as it had a private pool, which we used extensively – we also used the “public pool” all day, for the first 3 days, and were for the most part the only guests there, so was really pleasant. It never got crowded and really peaceful – there were a male & female Fly-Cather which arrived ever hour or two for a quick drink and dip in the pool. Cell phone signal is intermittent in the rooms & I had a little difficulty with the wifi (would have to disconnect & reconnect regularly), which is only available round the pool and restaurant/bar area – this was not an issue for me (did need to do some work & was able to do what I had to), but something that could frustrate some people.

My husband and I stayed at Zwahili in August, after they kindly rescheduled our visit that was booked for July and had to be shifted because of the lockdown. After our first day there we asked to extend our stay by a day because we didn't want to leave! The hospitality of the staff is what really makes this a 5 star experience. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating, and very attentive to all guests. Everything is run very smoothly and efficiently - the meals, the activities like the game drives and spa treatments, and even when electricity went out one night, back up power was up and running in no time. We stayed in the lodge, in a great room with a private balcony. The food was lovely, especially breakfast. We felt very well taken care of and would certainly want to visit again in future.

We booked the Madiba room but got the Rafiki because our payment didn't go through fast enough. This was a bit disappointing as we understood the Madiba one was a bit more private. We stayed 2 nights. The Rafiki was lovely and if you are looking at spending time in the private pool for endless hours on a very hot day, then this is it! The staff were all very friendly and helpful. I requested for a special anniversary dinner and they made a nice plan. Under the covid situation there was no daily cleaning of the room but the room was spotless. We did only one morning of a game drive. It was pleasant and social distancing was practiced. It is not a big game farm so don't expect to see the big 5 but it depends on what your purpose for the stay is. The food was lovely, not much to fault except maybe portions of dinner could be bigger. I feel the parking lot and road from where you take the game drive could be less red soil and more cement or pebbles. The mud on the day we left (mud due to rain) was horrific. There were also a couple of disappointments with the accommodation...They have no air conditioners!! The ceiling fan and floor fan were okay the first night but on the second night the heat was unbearable (heat with humidity right before rain arrived). We did not sleep at all. A dip in the pool meant exposure to the mosquitos. We tried sleeping with wet towels over our bodies but it was no use. We spent a sleepless night, we were more tired than when we went!. The other thing was there are no curtains on 2 windows in the bedroom, meaning no sleeping in and in the bathroom it was only the thin curtain which made me feel very exposed as the room was still visible to people walking past. I feel for the price you pay and its rating, some good curtains and an air conditioner are not far fetched. I would love to go again but I would do it in summer so I can enjoy the private pool offered by the two room types but it would need to be hot and that means no sleeping at night if there are no air conditioners...

The Safari tents are nice but no Air Conditioning and a splash pool would be great for each tent. During the summer in South Africa u need and expect Air Conditioning at a 5 star lodge
The Lodge rooms also have no Air Conditioning. Very very hot
The food is great !!
Game drives are personal and very good
Personnel are fantastic and very friendly

We booked a romantic getaway in the Royal African Presidential Suite.

On arrival, our first impressions were friendly staff but the lodge itself was tatty.
Decks hadn’t been sanded and varnished in years, saggy stair cases etc.

Confusion set in when we signed in for the Presidential Suite.
After much back and forth and asking to see our booking confirmation (we had confirmation and full payment had been made in advance) we were told to please have a drink at the bar.

30min later we were presented with a phone and on the other side was Betsy the owner.
She informed us that there had been “a system problem with Agoda” and the room was double booked. She informed us that this wasn’t her problem as it was a system error.

When we asked what we can do, as we were the 1st ones in the lodge we were told they cannot turn the other people who had booked away, even though they weren’t there yet as “we can’t do that to a customer”
I’m not sure what we were then having booked and paid.

We were then shown to a “Safari Tent” in 33 Degree C heat that had no air conditioning and an open toilet behind a reed/branch screen that was waist high that was the alternative.

Needless to say we declined this offer and left. On departing we were then told we had to pay for the drinks we had at the bar while the manager and Betsy were discussing our double booking.

Valentines Day ruined and not a single damn was given by the owner.

I will not be back.

Mr Perry, We apologise again for this error and reiterate that it was indeed an online booking error between Hotelbeds & Agoda. This was immediately reported to them. The reservation we received online from Hotelbeds was in fact for a safari suite and not the presidential suite. The fact that neither Hotelbeds nor Agoda has taken responsibility for this error is still a priority for us and will be resolved as you the client suffered a serious inconvenience and we are being held responsible.

What a beautiful weekend we had in celebration of my 30th birthday, Zwahili is amazing beyond words and the staff are very attentive and accommodating, excellent service always provided with a smile and i cannot thank them enough for adding an extra touch to making my birthday even more special. The food was immaculate, our room was kept clean and tidy. The game drives were magical and we were made to feel like royalty, we are very pleased with the standard and we definitely will be coming back in the near future.

We were 2 couples who visited Zwahili from 19 to 21 March 2022. Charity and her staff spoiled us so much so that they arranged for a private dinner at the boma as a surprise. Piet at the restaurant always ensured that we had something cold to drink and Janke shared her vast knowledge of nature during the game drives. What an unforgettable stay! Well done!

We needed to recharge and found the perfect place to do just that. From arrival to departure everything was perfect.
Management can be proud of each and every staff member. There is nothing like the sounds of the bush. A special thanks to our Game-ranger Tayla, for sharing her knowledge with us. We enjoined every minute of our stay and would highly recommend the lodge for business meetings and romantic getaways.

Incredible attentive staff, immaculate private accommodation & delicous food in the most beautiful safari / bush location you can imagine. Dear Pieter, Inquisitive scientific minds are desperately needed at this time in South Africa which has reached a cross roads. I thank you for this, your conservation effort and in supporting the protection of our natural resources. Preservation of our natural habitat remains the only solution to the impact man has made on this environment. Given the fact that a scientific approach is cardinal to the solution, conservation remains an emotive issue. Through this regimen we hope to undo and reverse the dwindling spiral mankind has inflicted upon our natural habitat. As you know we are busy with a gene preservation program in line with current legislation. According to this the Lions have to spend rehabilitation time in separated camps. Release onto the larger reserve will occur once permission is obtained. Until then daily monitoring and evaluation continues. The objective remains the re-establishment of Panthera Leo in our reserve and biosphere, true to the original gene found geographically 150 years ago. The research into this threatened specie continues. Dr Kevin Gast
Answer from ZwahiliGameLodge
Nylstroom
Hi Lindsay, thank you for our question. I have answered the review you refer to in depth, addressing the comments about stalking and our lions. Just in short, our reserve is 1800 ha big, and with very few natural predators, it is necessary for us to manage the animal numbers on our reserve to ensure a healthy environment with enough grazing. Our lions only arrived on the reserve last year and regulations require them to be kept in a separate enclosure for a min of 2 years, when being introduced to a reserve. They are kept in a fenced, but very spacious, natural environment camp. I hope this addresses your concerns. At Zwahili we take great pride in our reserve, and we can assure you that we follow the highest standard in conservation and game farm practices.
