Had the pleasure of spending Christmas 2019 camping at Nthakeni; what an amazing experience. The attention to detail that has gone into all the facilities is fantastic, from your own onsite camp kitchen, to the outdoor showers and even the communal lapa area by the pool providing a perfect place to relax after a nice swim in the pool which is shaded with a shade cloth roof to keep it a few degrees cooler and protect swimmers from the sun. Hosts Kobus and Annelize provide the perfect amount of attention and ensure their guests are comfortable and happy there. For any bush lover this is a real treat and I can not wait to get back and experience it some more. The safari tents as well as the cottage and house available for rent also look very appealing to me as an alternate to camping, I am lost for choice!! The location is great too, I was able to do a mornings visit to Kruger, entering via Pafuri gate which is only a few kilometres away. Thank you and well done, you should be proud of what you have achieved and that you are at the same time uplifting the local community.

We had a lovely stay at Nthakeni Camp. The attention to detail was superb and not a single area had not been thought about and our host was very welcoming. The location of the camp on the river is very special and is a few minutes away from the Kruger Pafuri gate so any further activities are easily attainable

Nthakeni Bush & River Camp had been the best accommodation we had so far. The camp is situated safely in a warm and friendly place where there are no disturbances. Our little family accommodation was perfectly selected for us - a single room and a double room villa facing a calm and flowing river, that is often visited by grazing cows and donkeys (as well as not-so-grazing crocodiles) with their melodic bells reminding us of their presence. At night, the hyenas remind us that the real Africa is still very close by and frequently curious elephants will venture up to the camp but rest assured that you are in safe hands. Each room has a touch of individuality, with interesting artwork created by Oom Koos. The place is well maintained with clean water supply and efficient energy for basic usage. We support and salute to the owners' sustainable living effort! The camp's mini mart has all the necessities (we love the boerwors!) and works on an honesty basis. Kobus and Annaliese, owners of Nthakeni, are the best hosts one could ask for. They are hospitable and attentive, with their every concern towards the local rural community. If you order your meals (separately charged) a day in advance, you will get to taste the scrumptious food prepared by Gloria and Thelma who run the restaurant in situ. We also appreciate the daily housekeeping staff who made sure we had a clean and comfortable stay. The trail in the camp is very well thought out. We enjoyed trekking it not once but twice and had endless sightings of skinks, flat lizards and two round eared elephant shrews, apart from the myriad birds that we saw! Beautiful, gigantic baobab trees dotted the forest. Nthakeni is minutes away from Pafuri Gate, which makes it convenient to visit Kruger Park. The region doesn't support Vodacom (same with the northern Kruger Park region) so in order to get signal, once you exit the camp, turn right onto the main road and travel a few hundred meters to the tin shack taxi rank and park under the tree. Voila! You will be reconnected to the rest of the world :D And do remember to medicate or take precautions to mitigate malaria (we used insect repellents copiously). These issues are easily overcome. We strongly recommend anyone to stay at this amazing camp to get a true South African experience. Looking forward to our next several visits!

We camped there for two nights and it is a 5 STAR of the grid camping site. we liked the location as it is very close to the pafuri gate of the Kruger National Park. We camped on a campsite with private ablutions overlooking a river.

We were traveling into Pafuri gate for a two week camping trip. Nthakeni came as a surprise, a good surprise. First, the route from Johannesburg is astonishingly quick - 6.5hrs 640km from Randburg to the gate. We went up the N1, past Pretoria, past Polokwane, past Louis Trichardt, to the R525, signposted Tshipise. The R525 is a very quiet, good road (unlike the R523 or R71), this route is better and almost as fast as using Orpen gate (6hrs, 500km).
The camping facilities are excellent, the site well located on the Mutale river, and the shade in most areas very good. When we were there it was hot, 37degrees, so, shade was very important. We did both the little walks (1km, 3km) and they were interesting, well laid out, with lovely baobabs and very scenic.
Kobus and Annelize are very helpful in every way, and there is even a little "honesty" bar for the odd items. We would recommend staying at Nthakeni not just for one night en route to Mozambique, Zimbabwe or to get into the Pafuri gate of the Kruger, we stayed for more and am pleased we did. it could even be said that Punda Maria camping is OK, but not great, so consider staying outside and driving in daily, say to do the birding in the north, until you move to other Kruger camps.

We have twice spent a night at Nthakeni on our way to Mozambique through Pafuri and highly recommend Nthakeni. Annelize and Kobus are super hosts and their attention to every detail ensures a comfortable and relaxing time in a beautiful environment. We have stayed in the tented camp and in Mulala Familly Cottage. Would highly recommend for more than one night.

We stayed here one night between exiting Kruger National Park and the nightmare of the Beitbridge Border crossing, The accommodation is nicely positioned on the river bank. Mosquiots were not a problem at all. We liked the efforts at sustainability - solar electricity and hot water by wood fire, good recycling. The two bedroomed accommodation we had was very comfortable. Kitchen well equiped. We had dinner in the on site resturant which was a bit disappointing but I have a fussy wife. The free wifi was a bit tight.

We travelled from Komatipoort through the Kruger and spent our last night at Nthakeni - It was by far the best place we stayed in. We wished we had booked for a week. It's neat as a pin and one can see that a lot of love goes into the place. We will definitely be back. It's only about 10 minutes drive from the Pafuri gate - so great place to stay if you want to explore that side of the park.

This hidden gem with its fantastic and exclusive private campsites only a few kilometers from the Pafuri Gate (Kruger National Park) is very much worth staying at. The campsites are huge and very private, each with its own ablution. There is a small shop that caters to most items you will need when camping. Note that these sites are without power, which makes it SO nice. No generators allowed, a main reason why many people return to these tranquil and extremely well-maintained campsites. There is also a small restaurant, offering tasty meals (booking is essential).Nthakeni, also has lovely laid-out hiking trails. The owners/hosts are most accommodating and very friendly and helpful. Nthakeni is a place we will return to.

Nthakeni is a sanctuary. We booked for two nights of camping and stayed 5! Kobus and Annelize, the owners, went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable and their kindess is felt throughout the whole camp. The campsites are huge, with beautiful views and privacy. You get private ablution facilities with stylish, simple attention to detail. The water from the donkey boilers behind is hot and plentiful. You will need an electricity source and the signal is on and off but a climb up a nearby kopjie gives a great G4signal. The woodland and river and birds and of course the huge baobabs make it a magical place. It was the highlight of our trip north and we will return!!
