Mkuze Falls Safari Lodge:

Our trip between Karongwe & Mkuze was a little stressful as our car broke down in Hoedspruit. Thankfully we got it sorted even though it was a Saturday. Such amazing people in that neck of the woods. I kept Mkuze Lodge informed about our progress via WhatsApp which was great.

On arrival, late afternoon s sadly we missed our first drive ☹ However we were greeted by the duty Manageress Sihle, what a wonderful friendly & chatty young lady! She took care of the form filling & welcome drink and then she showed us all around the lodge and to our room.

What a beautiful setting over the waterfall and gorge & the gardens are simply stunning! The main lodge is again nicely laid out, beautifully decorated & I particularly loved the lounge area with all the comfy furniture, loads of stunning coffee table books & a stunning deck overlooking the falls.

The meals were really amazing & we thoroughly enjoyed all of them. The lady who looked after all our needs, Mnelisi or “Nelly”, was an absolute gem going to great lengths to make sure we were always fine!

Our room was stunning, again the view over the falls and reserve is spectacular. We loved the bathroom with the outside shower & the little splash pool surrounded by the lushest vegetation! Unfortunately, we had no hot water on the first night, the maintenance chap came out & had a look but something on the geyser had gone and he was only able to fix it the following day. Luckily, it was exceptionally hot, so a cold shower was actually refreshing!

The reserve itself is too beautiful, so different to what we are used to in the Greater Kruger area. Our ranger Colin and tracker Thokozani - who is simply unbelievable like no other tracker we have ever experienced; were both really fantastic. Being December as to be expected the bush was green, lush & very thick. Once Colin found out we like birds he kicked into another gear and took great pleasure in the bird watching with us. He is extremely knowledgeable on the birds but as he says “normally” his guests are only interested in the Big 5. Being just hubby & I on the vehicle with them meant we could take time with the smaller things as well which was terrific. We truly loved our drives, the landscape, and the animals we were lucky enough to see. 4 of the Big 5 with the exception of leopard.

We so enjoyed our stay that we actually wanted to extend it by 2 nights. Hubby enquired with Sihle who said that there was more than ample room & we could stay a further 2 nights in our room as they had very few upcoming bookings. However she could not make the decision as to whether they would let us stay on the same rate so she then called a lady by the name of Nadine (I believe she & her husband manage the lodge) who said no we could not have the same rate, but we could stay for a higher amount. However hubby was adamant that if they were not going to let us stay on for the same rate, he would not. So sadly we had to leave. Seemed really short sighted on the lodges part given they were far from capacity! ☹

It was a wonderful stay, and we would return – just disappointed that we were not able to extend our stay!

Small 9 room game lodge situated on the banks of the Mkuze River in Northern Zululand.
This lodge focuses more on the 12500 ha reserve, it's game and has great birding.
Daily drives were very interesting despite a torrential downpour on our afternoon drive. The food was tasty and plentiful after succesful games drives through the diverse reserve.
All rooms are well positioned for a river or falls view.
Certainly a value for money product.

All rooms have beautiful views of the river and falls. We have stayed in room 5 right above the falls. Although the river was not flowing, the views were still spectacular with animals sipping water right below you. The hospitality as well as the friendliness of the staff is praiseworthy. Even with load shedding the 5 star quality food presented to us, was out of this world. We have definitely put on weight as they feed you from your arrival to your departure and you simply can't resist. The game drives were amazing and special as we have never been so close to lions, rhinos, buffalo and elephants. Njabulo and Vuzi are outstanding trackers and tried their best to spot the elusive leopard. Next time, guys!! The private plunge pool was a big hit in the heat of the day. This place is definitely a go back option and is highly recommended for couples who would like to break away from technology and stress.

Mkuze Falls Lodge left us with mixed feelings. The positives we experienced were that the staff are very friendly and accommodating. We loved the quietness of the lodge as it is the only lodge in the reserve. The rooms and lodge were very clean. The views from the main lounge and the rooms were amazing - we spotted an elephant, hippo and lions from our bedroom.

Unfortunately there is some serious work needed. They are currently upgrading the outside dining area and have redone the walkways. Understandable due to COVID the budget is tight but the lodge and rooms are in serious need of upgrading. We struggled with the fact that there was no indoor shower, only one outdoor shower which when it’s cold isn’t pleasant. Also the WiFi is only available in the lounge area not the restaurant or rooms. This was a frustration because only Vodacom works in the area. The food was average for us.

We had mixed feelings about the drives. There was plenty of repetition and a lack of extended basic bush knowledge. Although we saw some good game sightings because of repetition it lost its appeal. It would have been nice to have searched for different animals, we had to ask the ranger to drive to the buffalo the third time we had seen them from a distance and they were next to the road when we arrived so the sighting wasn’t inaccessible.

Most likely we will not return because of the surrounding competition offerings at the same rate.

We sincerely hope they up their game because the lodge and reserve have so much potential.

Highly disappointing experience ! This lodge is situated in an ideal setting but unfortunately the lodge itself is utterly dilapidated , unloved and zero maintenance . To name just a few issues , we were told no hot chocolate available , their ponchos are barely effective against the rain as they are old and the lodge was still waiting for new ones . We were served up frozen bread at breakfast time to put into the toaster . The baths in the rooms were peeling and terribly uninviting and when it came to the wine option , there was only one on offer !! All of the above is marginally acceptable perhaps at a price of R1000 a person a night , NOT R3000 plus a person . I am really annoyed we paid the amount we did and were offered up substandard accommodation and a terribly run lodge … I am told in a week or two the lodge changes hands which makes it even worse that they willing to charge us these rates - knowing the lodge is verging collapse right before its renewed . If anyone plans on going there BEFORE it’s redone - think again …

An incredible luxury bush experience with amazing sightings and the friendliest, most efficient and helpful Mkuze team. We highly recommend Mkuze Falls to everyone!

Game Drives: Sandile is an expert guide and his extensive knowledge on every animal, bird, tree, etc is remarkable. I'd highly recommend asking for Sandile as your guide. He has a lovely personality and is attentive and considerate to each guest. He really made our bush experience so very interesting, fun and exceptional. He tracked each animal with dedicated perseverance and we were amazed each time at every sighting. See pictures attached. Sandile is outstanding as a guide and as a person and we are so happy to have met him.

Booking: Our booking process with friendly Fezile was very easy and she kept in contact for days before the trip to ensure we would have all we needed. And we did have everything and more once we arrived at Mkuze which we greatly appreciated. Her friendly manner and the biggest smile each time we saw her was so welcoming. Sihle was also so kind and it was sad to say goodbye as they felt like friends.

Facilities: What a stunning place Mzuke remains to be! This is our 3rd visit and there have been lovely renovations done which make meals and free time so much more relaxing. The decked areas are a great spot for animal watching and it's from here that we spotted a hyena, crocodile and hippos! Our chalets are so comfy and fully equipped with all we needed. I appreciate the turndown of our beds at night as we hopped straight into bed after big dinners. The towels, pillows and linen are exceptional as is the view from our deck of the falls. Room 5 is the best!

Food: We were fully catered for during every meal despite each of us having different dietary requirements (vegan, vegetarian and lean meat eater). The kitchen team headed by Mandla created each dish with masterful flair and in a personalised and health conscious way which we highly appreciated. The dining team of Nelson, Nellie and Fortune made every meal so much better as they were always available and responsive to anything we required. Nelson is highly knowledgeable on wines and gins so definitely let him create drinks for you.

Mkuze Falls is beautiful in facilities and in the experience it offers. Well done to a great team and the kindest hearts... We will be back!

My husband and I visited Mkuze Falls Game reserve this weekend, and all I can say is WOW!!! From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, all the staff at Mkuze were consistently amazing! So friendly, so welcoming and so passionate. All Covid regulations were set in place and not once did we feel vulnerable. Sinhle was amazing welcoming us and checking us in, and made sure we were happy. The kitchen and dining staff Nellie, Fortune, Sabile and Mnelisi were so efficient and friendly. As for the game drives... the best we’ve ever been on! It wasn’t just about finding game, but so educational, we learned so much!! Matthew and Casey, you went above and beyond! Thank you for all the tips on what to look out for when looking for certain game. Loved the views, the rooms overlook a beautiful waterfall, with outdoor showers and your own plunge pool!! To end it off, as we were about to leave this morning, our car was driven to reception for us, we noticed it had had a beautiful clean! We can’t thank you enough! Definitely will be back! I’ve never felt more relaxed on holiday!

I can not put into words (without writing a book) about this place, it has to be on my top 3 locations every to go away.

Me and my wife went here for our honeymoon, as something 'different', we have never been to a safari and we did not want a plane old honeymoon in the sun. WE WANTED ADVENTURE.

First impressions were above expectations, we were greeted at the entrance by about 10 members of staff that welcomed us with open arms. they collected our bags, parked the car and handed us a nice refreshing drink :) perfect start!

the lodge was exceptionally clean and tidy, prepared prior to our arrival and they would pop in and clean three times a day while we were out and about. the views were to die for!! over looking the watering hole.

Game drives were twice daily :) and even managed to see the Big 5 before we left. The guides were very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. stopped for beverages and snacks to chat about the animals and wildlife that we saw throughout the journey and catered for our wishes if we wanted to see any particular animal :)

Best experience we have had as a couple and would give this reserve a 10 if possible. staff were amazing and could not do more for us.

Pictures attached for anyone that wishes to see them.

We had such a wonderful time at Mkuze falls. The setting is absolutely stunning with the view of the hills and waterfall from the lodge. Weather permitting you dine out overlooking the beautiful view. The staff are all so friendly and helpful, Wesley the chef who catered to all our needs, Thombilie, Nelly and Fortune.

Our guide Sandile was exceptional, he was very knowledgeable about the birds, animals and trees (thank you for our tree tours!) He made our game drives fun, informative and memorable. We were lucky to see so many animal family groups (Sandile taught us all the collective nouns for the animals!) including lion cubs frolicking with each other, newborn Zebras and Buffalo.

Our rooms were very clean, the beds were comfy and the outdoor showers were fantastic. We had an incredible time and would definitely recommend this experience to others.
