Spent a wonderful family weekend at Schaefer’s Halt. Stayed in ‘The Cozy’ a quaint cottage close to the farm house. Gardens are tranquil and well tended. The 3 dams are well stocked with trout so the fishing was very good. Will definitely go back again.

An absolute gem! Perfect for our large family getaway with 4 different self catering accommodation options or a romantic getaway for two with breathtaking tranquil surroundings. Crisp white bedding and towels👌🏻A heartfelt thank you to the owners Senette and Gerhard for an amazing experience. We will be back ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

You know you are in heaven when there is a hot-water bottle in your bed and sherry on the kitchen table. What a blissful two days @ Schaefer’s Halt. Cost stone cottage over looking the mountains and the veggie garden. The owners were delightful and I got a free painting lesson in the studio! I’ll be back!

Unpleasant stay. Sharon was sadly disrespectful. She had other visitors at the time and appeared to be so consumed with being there for them, and impressing them, that she snubbed, ignored and was even rude and dismissive as a result.

Dams were poorly stocked despite specifically asking how well stocked the dams were when making a booking enquiry. Very disappointing as we are a family of 4 experienced fishermen who are only able to get together once a year as a family to fish. Mr Schaefer needs to be honest about his stock in the dams, when I enquired I was told dams are always well stocked, then when we were there and I asked when last the dams were stocked he said some time ago and tried to avoid the topic.
Noise of the nearby main road certainly doesn't give you a feeling of escaping joburg for the countryside. We found the traffic noise much worse than living in joburg, especially while trying to fish in the dams. Not relaxing at all. A pity as views are spectacular.
Supply of wood was wet, we had to stock up and replace wood ourselves. Very smokey fires due to wet wood.
Units are not serviced.
Surface Cleanliness good but rubbish under couch and under second bedroom beds.
Accommodation comfortable, warm, bath only and an outside shower, not our choice for winter.
Trevor and Sharon as hosts are friendly and sorted out 2 minor problems we had.
Toilet paper short supplied.
Great set up for pets.
Remember to take DSTV card.

Having stayed here many times before, we booked here again for the long weekend in September 2020. What a terrible experience! New management have taken over this once pristine venue – they are rude, aggressive and even verbally abusive over WhatsApp communication. Basic requests and expectations are not met and treated with disdain. Apparently she has never seen requests like ours, namely:
1. Water pressure be checked in one of the units (there was no hot water at all). This was by her own admission her fault for not replacing water filters.
2. On booking, we requested our cottages be serviced daily. When we asked when someone will come in, we were told to call the domestic ourselves directly to arrange. We disputed this.
Her response: Still trying to find my girl. She does not answer phone. NOBODY INFORMED ME ABOUT THIS beforehand. Im trying my best but cannot guarantee.

Without warning or letting us know, we find the gate into the farm had been locked the one afternoon. I mentioned that this is safety hazard, should we have an emergency and need to get out quickly.
Her response: “if we do not lock suppose u would have been unhappy about that as well. Trevor and Sharon did same. We learnt from them. This is GETTING REDICULOUS.”
She finally told us after having a go at us that keys were supplied on the cottage keys – which she never told us.

We were requested to lock our dogs away (which we had paid additionally so they could be there) so the management & their family could have a braai and drink in front of one of our units, right where we were set up for the weekend.

Another message from her: "No sry not 1 of your group ever asked me anything. Just demands. I'M VERY upset after bending backwards. U rented cottages for weekend and NOT bought the property. sry but this was just the limit. ask don't just assume and hit with threats. Gate OPEN for u to get out fast. Lock or leave open. Your decision. I even drove Suster (domestic) backwards and forwards for u. Ek nou fokkin genoeg gehad"

I don’t know what threats she is referring to, but the verbal abuse is astounding, given our completely reasonable requests.

My family and I have stayed at Schaefer’s Halt on numerous occasions over the years. Under the management of Trevor and Sharon, they went out of their way to make each visit memorable. Very sad to see a great Fishing venue go this way. One goes on holiday to enjoy, unwind and relax. New management made the experience awkward, uncomfortable and unpleasant.

As I said above – DO NOT BOOK HERE, unless you are up for verbal abuse. TRULY AWFUL!

What a lovely place this was. Far exceeded my expectations.

First off the owners had to attend a funeral and phoned me on the Wednesday prior to our stay to arrange that they will be back at the cottages late afternoon on Friday and to give me alternative numbers if we arrive prior to them. I found this very considerate. Due to unforeseen circumstances though we only arrived very late on the Friday evening and what a relief when we reached the Snug cottage, very tired, to find the key in the door, all the lights switched on for us and a carafe of sherry to enjoy.

The linen is of superb quality, the decor so romantic and the bathtub pure bliss. We thoroughly enjoyed the fireplace in the bedroom and it wasn't even that cold. We just loved the whole cottage's decor and atmosphere. And there were books to read in the window cove in the bedroom - I just loved that!

The kitchen was also one of the best equipped I have ever come across with every utensil you could possibly need and of good quality as well.

The owners were friendly and very helpful.

Overall we just loved this little cottage and I truly believe we will visit again.

This beautifully situated self catering cottage has a great view over the mountains artistically placed right in front of the unit. The beauty is interrupted by a busy R540 main road with increased traffic on weekdays. The evening traffic does reduce.
The unit has the basic finishings that you would expect with a few extras. The unit we were in could have done with a good cleaning and a little more maintenance over the years. Some of the appliances could be upgraded and modernised.
The units are not services so be sure to budget for that if you were planning on an extended stay.
It is a pet friendly so be sure to bring your friendly pets for a time on the farm.
There is a few good short walks in the area as well as some great cycling routes.
Remember to take your trout rod with for some fly fishing.

If you want to get away from it all - this is the spot. Clean and with everything you could need. We stayed in Wind song and it was winter but had loads of blankets and hot water bottles provided by the establishment. A lovely open fire place in the lounge and kitchen has all the equipment you need plus a braai outside. It was just to beautiful to be away from the town and out in the country. Will definitely return.

This was our 5th visit to Schaefers Halt.

This time around we stayed in Cloud Cottage, very clean and very well equipped, it is spacious, quiet, offering lovely views both from the front porch and out the kitchen window.

The hosts, Trevor and Sharon are two wonderful and friendly people, more than willing to ensure that all is in place and take care of your need should any arise.

The farm is lovely with various trout dams, wonderful walks and being pet-friendly, the whole family can get away together.

Very nice fireplace ads to the ambience of the living room and waking up with the sun streaming in through massive windows in the main bedroom is a joy in itself.

The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need and more.

The same can be said for Wind Song.

I highly recommend Schaefers Halt
