The two nights that we spent at African heART were by far the most peaceful and relaxed nights I have had staying anywhere besides my own home in a very long time.
As soon as I walked through the door I felt at ease and very comfortable. The art is truly something pleasant and beautiful.
Everyone was incredibly friendly and polite including the other guests which added to the pure comfortable vibe that African Heart held withing its masked front gate.
It was a pleasure to have been accommodated in such a genuinely friendly manner and I will be back and look forward to it with great excitement.
Thank you all for our amazing weekend.
Best regards
Aaron, Natty, Jessie and Siya

I stayed in African heart twice with a mixed perception of the place. As a traveller, I think I would have missed the vibrant atmosphere of people coming, leaving and enjoying drinks at the bar. However, I was staying for a while in Capetown and was happy about a calm place which is mainly inhabited by volonteers staying there for longer periods. So it feld more like joining a flat share.

The showers are great, the kitchen ok and the location perfect. The beds are ranking on the top end of the Southern African Backpacker I have stayed at. African heart is definetly good value for money, 120 Rand including a self service cereal breakfast and free wifi is really fair for Capetown. Observatory is a nice, layed back area with people of different races, class and background, quite seldom in CT I would say.

Feels like home. Great staff. Great location in Obz. Things are kept clean, and someone is always there if need be. It's quiet and staff ensure that people respect each other' needs. I now live in the area, and still pop in to say hi frequently... they really try and keep it like a family :)

We booked the family room as it had 2 beds with shower for my daughter and I. On arrival after 4.30 pm, we were shown the room but told if we wanted it the manager would have to make room up, were given an airless alternative with bath, 1 bed, the shower did not work. On unpacking food into fridge and cupboard, both were absolutely filthy. quests obliged to clean up and put crockery etc away. rule did not apply to manager, her dishes were left in dirty sink overnight or all day. kitchen table was left covered with clutter for entire 3 day stay. Cutlery and crockery supposedly clean,
was not!! no clean dish cloths and nothing to clean counter with, was loath to use kitchen facilities. Thank goodness for the cleaning lady Evelin, she was a star but only worked part time. Although only one other room was occupied, the manager seemed to sleep in alternate rooms each night so we were exposed to unmade beds and untidy rooms each time we used the upstairs kitchen. The verandah is a tip. who knows when last swept and cleaned, cushions filthy. To add insult to injurie, i left 3 items of clothing behind, everyday for 5 days I called their land line, leaving numerous messages, not one returned. 5th evening I arrived at premises and lo and behold the manager was wearing my clothes!!!! demanded their return, absolutely disgusted with the whole experience. One would think with the current situation, hospitality establishments would be doing their best and this so called manager would appreciate her job. Clearly I am mistaken in this!!! admittedly I am not a young back packer, but do expect a minimum of hygiene and integrity. Never again African Heart, not a good reflection on things African, jolly poor show and thats being kind.

I only stayed one night at African Heart but I would have stayed longer if I needed to - it is a very clean, welcoming little hostel, with friendly staff and great facilities. There is a small sitting area downstairs and a lovely bright breakfast room with lots of sofas upstairs, so plenty of space to relax. We stayed in a double room which had a very comfortable bed, and en suite shower. There is free breakfast (cereals) with the accommodation, which is reasonably priced. Obs was very quiet when I was there as it was university holidays so there wasn't much going on, but I hear it's a vibrant, lively area when the students are around. I would definitely recommend this hostel.

I've stayed at African Heart a number of times over the past few years, and always enjoy the friendly vibe, great location, comfortable surroundings, helpful & happy staff, etc. I'm an older guy here for a mix of work and pleasure, and I've stayed at times in one of the private rooms (nice!) and also the dorm (fine, too, and cheap!). Always meet people to chat with, and it's just a block and a half to the Observatory restaurant/club scene, where you can easily hang out with people of all sorts and enjoy good music and food. This is definitely one of my favorite places to stay at anywhere around Cape Town.

what a fantastic stay we had at african heart in arty Obs. we arrived to a lovely reception of very friendly staff and management, so we immediately felt at ease after our long trip. The place has such a lovely atmosphere...very homey! The rooms were beautifully decorated...very arty and affordable and public transport not far off...just right up my alley. with the sass and buzz of obz, the bars and restaurants were just a stone throw away and it was always nice to come home to the nice quiet and tranquil setting of the back packers after a night out. Also loved the fact that you get free breakfast.. that was a plus plus to our stay. we really enjoyed our stay and we will definitely be back... thanks guys for giving us such a memorable stay!!!

African heart is a wonderful place to stay.
We stayed there for nine days and slept very well in fact it was safe and offered a friendly atmosphere. The staff members were very friendly and helpful in organizing things (driver, trips,...). The house is decorated nicely and the rooms were quiet, so we slept well.
For the next trip to South Africa we're looking forward to stay here again.
